About

Pre calamity As a citizen of Junctar and a survivor of the Calamity you know that there used to be an entire world outside the borders of these islands. Many came from the 3 other continents to the west and east, but a good few also stood and fought on the soil you now stand on. Where you come from however, and how you ended up in the Deadzone remains a mystery.

Post calamity The Mucklung Badlands Your memory is hazy and filled with gaps, you know only your last name but none of your history or if you have any relatives. Fragmented memories of the Calamity float through your head occasionally: the enormous white eye floating in the heavens, the horrid sounds of screams and snarls from men and beast and your own boots trudging through the mud and city streets as you ran and fought with faceless humanoids you do not recognize. After what felt like a pitch black eternity filled with these broken images you suddenly awoke in the first Deadzone. Your breath was heavy as your lungs were filled with brown fluids of the disease. You grabbed your meager belongings and fought your way to some semblance of shelter. After discovering that even a campfire could not keep itself alive in this harsh environment you lost consciousness again. You were eventually found by a traveler covered in rags and wearing a gasmask, a handgun closely held in both hands. She brought you back to a cabin on the edges of the Deadzone and nursed you back to health, draining your lungs by puncturing them and siphoning out the fluids. During a very painful week of treatments you noticed your old skin color fading away and being replaced by the pale coloration you have now.

The traveler introduced herself as Phinnea Dall’gowé, a Fallen Aasimar who researches Deadzones. She aims to find the reason for their appearance and how to neutralize them. She explained that you are a Void Body now, an entity that has survived the life and magic sapping qualities of the Deadzones. You too now have a limited capability to sap and destroy magical energy. This benefit comes with its risks however, as these Void Bodies are yet to be fully understood. As such both the government and more nefarious researchers would love to get their hands on a Body such as yours. Additionally the natural infernal magic that tieflings normally have, has been completely removed from you. Phinnea herself was also being targeted and sought because of her knowledge, but she refused to share her findings to protect the Void Bodies and to prevent others from heading into the Deadzones.

On my own When you recovered, Phinnea, you and the ghostly spirit cat William journeyed through Xantré and Dirovel to the Devilspine Docks. During your travels you learn that Phinnea hails from the North-Eastern continent of Naddéron, specifically the large kingdom of Plat’letu (France). She used to be a physician that studied at the Grande Hall le Medica. When the Calamity happened the area around her hometown turned into what she now understands to be a Deadzone. Her celestial heritage left her with a choice: use her powerful healing to save others, or use her wings to flee. She chose the latter and was subsequently punished by the heavens for her choice. Her wings were taken away and she had to fight and survive like the rest of the world. The only thing she was able to bring with her from home was the spirit of her cat William who died in the Deadzone and refused to pass on. She has now dedicated her life to finding a fix for these Deadzones and to heal all afflicted by its effects. The Devilspines Phinnea was heading back to the Devilspine Docks to restock her air filters as well as gather other supplies that are hard to get via legal channels. She explained that the Devilspines was a lawless town with a massive sewer network that allowed smuggling ships to pass from city to city underground. While the town was full of criminals and outlaws, it was run by a secret council of different interested parties, known as the Board of Spines, that kept it from becoming pure evil. At the end of the day the Devilspines shelters the wounded, the poor and the wrongfully convicted True criminals that want to avoid the law, pay heavy prices to finance the shelter of those that do deserve it. On top of shelter it also provides adventuring equipment to poor adventurers, and sells cheap housing to those that can't find homes in the cities. While it uses crime to run its more philanthropic businesses, most agree that they do more good than harm and support those that are abandoned by the government and law. The Devilspines got its name from the massive spiny mountain range that separates it from the rest of Dirovel. During a seismic event long before the Calamity, the spines of the Devilspine Ridge rained down upon the area and caused the forest and sea around it to become difficult to traverse. Devilspine characters and locations The city is run by an old Brass Dragonborn named Sountin Tem who has been its mayor far before the calamity, and is the leader of the secret Board of Spines. The tavern you would have frequented most would be Sally’s Sandcastle, run by a hot-pink punk tiefling named Sally. This wood and straw beach hut on the sandy shore of the Devilspines featured cocktails, drugs, music, dancing and weekly bar fights. At the top of a hill in the town lived a female gnome named Distelles Cutts who ran a Monster Smith shop that turned monster parts into weapons and armor. There is a second tavern that was the regular drinking place of the older folk, called The Infernall Inn. It was run by an older human named Thraben, who apparently works for the large mafia family known as the Lorestalkers Cartel. Its leader, the God of Strings Fhénon was also deeply invested in the town, running most of the smuggling that goes through its sewer system, The Emerald Path. Thraben was a naturally forgetful fellow, always asking your name upon entering the tavern, but you later learned that this was on purpose. He would wipe his mind each day and store necessary memories in the different bottles on his shelf. Patrons could then order a drink with a code word and upon consumption, Thraben would remember their name and any other significant memories.

My Jobs Your work would have consisted of: Fighting and dancing in Sally’s Hunting and taking down the monsters and Nocturnates that roam the mountains and forest. Defending the town from officers, marshalls and bounty hunters that came for the citizens. Smuggling and guarding smuggling ships in the Emerald Path. As Phinnea ordered her equipment, worked on her research in her house and prepared for her next expedition, you stayed at her house and worked to pay for your own food and equipment. William the cat familiar took a strong liking to you, and whenever a job proved difficult or you were in a pinch, he would apparate out of thin air and assist you.

My own Path At some point during your stay you found the house of Phinnea empty and blood on several of the walls and the floor. You found a bloodstained letter on her desk that simply read: “Someone has found us. I do not know who but I’ve lured them away into the woods. Please take the money I’ve left behind and flee. William should be able to sense when they are close, so whenever he appears follow him and keep your head down. I hope we meet again, but do not try to find me. Keep save Anthony, Phinnea. “ You grabbed the money, your belongings and followed William who appeared outside quickly thereafter. You grabbed a boat in the capital city Vé and journeyed back to Xantré where you started hopping from city to city. You would work different jobs, gather money and then disappear again when you would hear the meowing of William. Eventually you found information on a well paying job and journeyed to the town of Origin where you completed the search for the missing of the miner crew. After this you were asked by Headmaster Ardan Chaosheart to help with the search for the Order of the Swords. You grabbed your gear and followed Leotaru to the capital city of Excelsia, where the next part of your adventure will play out.
