While that may come across as cold to some people, it's just a result of being confident in her abilities. Once you've earned her trust, you'll find a generous and loyal woman, just as likely to treat you to tasty food and drink as to draw steel on those who threaten you.

The first thing most people notice about Toshikage is her size. Toshi has always been large, even among other Roegedyn. Growing up, she was always bigger than the other children her age, even some of the boys. It was her size and assumed strength that started her upon an unexpected life of adventure

The decades before the 85th Trident and Merlwyb's ascent to the Admiralty are often known as the Golden Age of Piracy. It was during this time that Toshikage Magotes was born, in a tiny village on a small island to the Southeast of Vylbrand proper. As a child, the only remarkable thing about Toshi was her size. She wasn't exceptionally clever, swift, or adept at any of the trades her people practiced. Her life was essentially uneventful, until midsummer of her 11th year. The Salty Krakens, one of the myriad pirate crews out of Limsa, ran afoul of both a a Garlean convoy and a massive storm in short succession. The crew was lucky to have drifted to a island where they could recover. Desperate for materiel and in sore need of hands, their commander, Captain Lyngbenn, made the decision to raid the village for supplies and 'recruits'. To be fair, the captain tried to avoid bloodshed, but after a short struggle, the Krakens pressganged several of the villagers, including Toshi, into service. While an awful quirk of circumstance, it was this life that afforded Toshi her first taste of excellence.

The next decade and a half of Toshi's life was spent at sea. First with the Salty Krakens, she started as a deck hand and rigging monkey. Eventually, she was forced into combat, defending the ship when they themselves were raided. It was in this action that her true talents became clear. While she wasn't the swiftest on land, her blade was a blur. While she wasn't the strongest Roegadyn, the power behind her blows was relentless. While she wasn't the keenest of wit, her cunning in battle was soon unmatched. Within three years, the captain came to rely on her as both enforcer and champion. On more than one occasion, it was Toshi's skill that pulled the crew through dire straits.

Like most things in life, this couldn't last. Captain Lyngbenn eventually retired, fat, rich, and happy. In contrast, his successor, Captain Grymryss, was eager to make a name for himself, taking risks that often fell to Toshi's accumen to resolve. Resenting the Toshi's success, at the cost of his reputation, Grymryss decided he needed a quick and hefty score to boost his reputation. Grymryss ordered an attack on an isolated ship, lying to the crew and telling them it was a merchant vessel. In point of fact, it was a ship belonging to the Bloody Executioners. Once she discovered the deception, Toshikage objected loudly to the captain's decision, but was silenced by the crew's collective fear of reprisal from the Executioners or punishment from the Upright Thieves. Clearly, to her, the captain planned to cover up the attack, killing or enslaving the Executioners' crewmen, and bragging about a rich merchant score. Unsatisfied, Toshi snuck out at the next port, reaching out to the Thieves and explaining what had happened. She asked for mercy for the crew, as they were unaware of the captain's treachery until too late.

Knowing she shouldn't return to the Krakens, Toshi signed on with another crew, eventually earning their trust, but the shadow of Grymryss followed her. While he hadn't been Captain of a major pirate power, Grymryss still had friends in many places. His hate and vow of vengeance for her 'treachery', kept Toshi from ever finding another home among the pirate crews. The last few years of her 'career' were spend bouncing from crew to crew. Truthfully, while she always looks back on her time at sea fondly, Toshi was grateful when Admiral Merlwyb enacted the anti-piracy laws, allowing her to leave the crews and set off on her own.

A young woman of 26 years with few marketable skills, Toshi had difficulty finding satisfying work. Guarding merchant caravans were the most readily available, fending off wild animals and the occasional beastmen as they traveled from one city to the next. It was during one of these trips that the spark of Toshi's future would be ignited. As a mercenary guard, she was afforded only the most basic of fare by her employer: simple rations, easy and cheap to acquire. Her companions in the guard would often use native plants to lend the bland food a more exciting flavor. This process and the combinations achieved, intrigued Toshi.

On one of these trips to Ul'dah, the client provided a bonus to the guard corps: a ticket to one of the gladiatorial arena fights. On a lark, Toshi decided to attend the match and fell in love. Between the intensity of the fights and the amount of money changing hands, Toshi knew she'd found her new home. After that day's event was finished, Toshi went to speak with the organizer and signed up as a fighter. For the next four years, Toshi fought as 'The Bloody Buccaneer'. Cast primarily as a heel, Toshi became the rocks and reefs many challengers dashed themselves against in their quest to reach the champion. She never conquered the hill to become champion herself, but that wasn't really her goal. She just wanted fun, clean fights and the money to support herself. The latter proving to be rather easy. With her combat skills honed by years at sea, Toshi was able to keep herself funded. While she hates losing to this day, the losses were always hard-earned.

One of those losses introduced Toshi to one of her life long friends, Andrik Adivya. The Hrothgar was one of the few challengers who managed to step past Toshi en route to the Championship, and probably the only one to make it look effortless. His unpredictable style and strange approach to combat intrigued Toshi, and her determined grit impressed Andrik in return. The two struck up a fast freindship, continuing long past their respective retirements.

Around halfway through her tenure as a gladiator, Toshi came to an uncomfortable realization. A brutal battle and a staff healer who was just a little slow led to a persist, bothersome ache that never eased completely. Several small chronic injuries and the sinking feeling of her youth draining out drove Toshi to begin looking for a new career. After some consideration, Toshi's mind wandered back to the nights around the camp fires with the other caravan guards, learning the different spices used in the locales, laughing, and enjoying others' company. She decided that she wanted to create those kinds of experiences for others. She began using some of the extra cash from her winnings to begin learning to cook. Eventually, she was fortunate enough to earn herself a spot at the famed Bismark in Limsa, and her training as a culinarian began in truth.
