This is Caleb. Caleb is a powerful medium. His family is from a long line of mediums with varying powerful spiritual gifts. 

Caleb is lucky enough to take after his great grandmother and managed to land himself with pretty much a little bit of everything and no means to really control these abilities, as none of his immediate family has any of the abilities he has.
In fact, his side of the family have estranged themselves from the weirdness of the rest of the family. Caleb is largely ignored and sometimes even scolded when he tried to tell his parents what he sees.
In the end, Caleb keeps mostly quiet about what goes on, realizing he is the only one that can see them. It was only a source of teasing and ridicule by siblings and other children at school anyway, why open himself up to more torment?
Later on down the line Caleb comes into possession of his great grandmother's notes and books - she gives him everything she had in her will when she passed away - in a letter included in the collection of items Caleb inherits she explained how she knew what he had to deal with, that she was like him and was gifted with everything and how she wished she could have been the one to teach him and actually get to meet him but she hoped that what she left him would be sufficient.
Eventually Caleb learns to harness and reign in his abilities with help from other mediums and paranormal experts that respected his great grandmother.
