Summary

22542777_h3Rh6eN7yaiaswr.png

Some cats, when they lose their humans, search desperately to find them again. Some would travel for days, months, years on end to be reunited with those people who had once cared for them.

...And then there are cats like Mitko, and humans like his old ones. You see, kittens are cute... for a time. But then they grow up, and suddenly the investment just isn't worth it. They're not as cute and silly and cuddly as they once were - Now they're scratching at the doors to be let out to chase the birds, leaving gifts of mice on your porch, marking their territory, dragging your shoes and your hair ties and your toilet paper through the house because they're bored of the way that you've grown bored of them. And so eventually those trips outside get longer and longer, until eventually the door never opens to let them in again at all.

Mitko found himself with a choice - Lay down and die, or adapt and overcome. And chose he did. Armed with claws and fangs, he could hunt and fight and survive. It wouldn't be easy... but it would be worthwhile.

Perhaps his life had taken a harsh turn; perhaps there were more turns yet to come. Perhaps his greatest allies would not be those who had raised him, who he had trusted, but those so different they struggled to understand each other. Perhaps his path was strange... some might even say wrong. But he would follow the road before him.

Fate and past be damned, he would survive.

Trivia

  • While hunting in the fall of the year his humans abandoned him, Mitko encountered a young red fox also in search of a meal. After catching a mouse they had been chasing and leaving it for them, the two became allies of sorts, hunting and traveling together. Though the two struggle to communicate at times, they've become rather close friends. Given their relative comfort in human-populated areas, Mitko suspects that they, too, might have been a former human pet, abandoned for being "more trouble than they're worth," though he's not brought it up.
  • Mitko and his fox companion are inspired loosely by a cat "owned" by one of my neighbors: A skittish, almost feral black cat. He and his father were never really let inside, but because they technically had owners, none of us were ever able to do anything to help them, so they took to other methods of getting by; for the child, that includes hunting alongside a fox in my very yard. They seem to get along pretty well! (As long as they stick to the mice and moles rather than trying to get into the coop after the chickens, I have no problems with it.)
