Physical

height  177cm / 5'9
weight  73kg / 160 lbs

A lithe yet toned body, fitting for a waterbending bowman. Yukka wears his hair long and loose with dual braids, separating the white strands from the dark. If one is lucky enough to spot him unmasked, the most notable features are his lips, painted black, and the scar that runs down his left eye. The blue in his eyes teeters on the edge of sanity and tranquility. Yet, in spite of this, he possesses a hallowing type of beauty. It is hard to look away.

His fingertips, which are also painted black, are kept sharp and long, and resemble talons more than they do nails. This, combined with his generally volatile demeanor, make him unapproachable to common folk.

dress

Yukka remains in clothing that is typical of the water tribe he hails from. During colder seasons he dons his fur coat, but in the heat of the summer he will forgo it entirely. Strapped to his back are his mother's bow and quiver, which he uses to hunt both game and men alike.

For the sake of being incognito, he is willing to dress in the earth kingdom's garbs, but you won't catch him alive or dead in the fire nation's clothing. (Unfortunately, there is indeed an arc where he has to masquerade as a local, but as per usual, Yukka struggles to maintain a look that doesn't call attention.)

personality

mbti  estj
alignment  neutral evil
temperamentcholeric
anger type vengeful

Malevolent, cruel, spiteful... You can call it by any name, but the end result is the same. Yukka is a man out for blood and vengeance, and this drive is the sole motivation that keeps him going, as he has nothing else to lose. In his selfish pursuit of "justice," he is unwilling to accept peace or reparation, going so far as to admonish those who fall in line in order to survive. To Yukka, a life is not worth living if it means living under oppression, and the cowards who are willing to compromise aren't worth his time nor pity. Those who stand in his way, whether Fire Nation or not, should expect hostility.

Having grown up as a water-bending prodigy, Yukka has an inflated sense of self and purpose which has persisted well beyond his youth. His overconfidence has blossomed into full-blown arrogance, leading him to make hasty or rash decisions. In fact, his life's mission in and of itself betrays this haughty rationale, as he truly believes he can continue operating as a one-man army against the Fire Nation's forces. His arrogance also manifests in the form of snide remarks towards civilians and consistently mocking or belittling his enemies. Overall, he is not a pleasant person to be around so long as he is fixated on his revenge.

There is more to Yukka than just his obsession with revenge, however. He shows reverence towards spirits and respect towards culture and tradition. While spending time in the Earth Kingdom, he'll mind his manners: if elbows aren't allowed on the table, he'll refrain from touching the table. If noodles must be slurped noisily, he'll slurp as loud as he can. Even if he abhors the Fire Nation's culture, you will not catch him doing anything to upset the spirits of the nation. He also enjoys listening to the wisdom elders provide, able and willing to sit for hours and respectfully engage with the old and wise over some tea.

His sense of justice, although twisted and misguided, comes from a place of good intention. Yukka will not stand by should he witness an unfair or unjust act. If he is strolling through the market and catches someone stealing, he will intervene, even at the cost of attracting attention of posted guards. He has a strong sense of right and wrong, albeit a very black and white version. He is not delusional either; he is well aware that he has crossed a line he cannot come back from, well aware that he is committing atrocities himself. He does not view himself as a paragon of morality or justice, and if left alone with his thoughts for too long, struggles some nights to justify his existence. This leaves him with just enough wiggle room to perhaps be swayed one day from his path of violence and destruction.

history

Far beyond the reaches of the Southern Water Tribe's capital, Harbor City, stood the village of Nanoq. The village had initially separated due to a difference in spiritual traditions and beliefs, but sustained good relations with the Chieftain and Elder Councils. Nanoq, however, could operate entirely independent of outside assistance, so it was a regular occurrence that the village leader would remain silent during most council meetings. The people of Nanoq taught all children how to waterbend, making the entire village capable of doing so. Seeing waterbending as a gift from the moon spirit, great emphasis was placed on learning it, to the point that those incapable of it were seen as spiritually weak, and potentially capable of ruining the village's relations with the spirits.

Yukka was no exception. As the son of the tribe's leader, his mother Amka, he put his all into mastering the art of both the hunt and bending. The elders, his teachers, only ever had good things to say about the prodigy. Leaving him with an inflated ego, this often meant that the other kids his age would find any excuse to avoid spending too much time around him, lest they wished to be subject to comparisons concerning the gap in skill. There was only one other student in his age category that could rival him, and her name was Sakkari. This spurred a friendly rivalry between them, and they would often hunt together in order to show off or outperform the other, but in good faith.

Then the black snow appeared. It was only a matter of time, after all. Neighboring villages were being raided, and it was no longer safe for council meetings to be held regularly. Contact was soon cut off with the other tribes as Amka prepared for the long-haul: she stressed self-determination and stubbornly denied seeking outside help. Yukka, only 13 at the time, helped bolster their stronghold. When the Fire Nation's troops showed up at their village, Amka faced their General head-on. General Yu's approach was far different from the gossip Nanoq would receive concerning the other tribes under attack. He asked for a "sit down" and a talk. Wary, but wishing to avoid unnecessary loss of her people's lives, Amka agreed, inviting General Yu—alone—into her home. After several long hours he emerged, Yukka's heart skipping a beat, only to relax when his mother followed out soon after.

It appeared that General Yu was not here to kill them all as they had feared. The man's reputation preceded him as a generous, honorable man who was not quick to resort to violence. Soon black snow became a familiar sight for Nanoq as the negotiations continued. Although his mother largely kept him in the dark about what was being discussed, Yukka knew that she was prioritizing her tribe, not wishing to wind up like the neighboring tribes and villages: razed and abandoned. Fire Nation troops became loosely scattered about the village as they settled. Construction began soon after. The troops were building a base and the tribe, under Amka's direction, agreed to help. Temporary homes were built for the higher ranked soldiers, whereas lower ranks were invited into the tribe's homes. General Yu himself was invited to stay with Amka, in the hopes that she could keep an eye on him. Interactions for the most part were amiable, but this uneasy alliance did not last.

nanoq's destruction

Yukka does not know what triggered the beginning of the end. One evening, tucked away in his room, he overhears a scuffle between his mother and General Yu. They spoke in hushed tones so he cannot make out individual words, but Amka's tone of anger is hard to miss. The following morning, General Yu takes all of his men and they hit the seas without so much as a farewell. In spite of the shroud of mystery surrounding the circumstances, he was glad to be rid of the intruders. Things would surely return back to normal now.

It was hardly a week before they saw the black snow again. Of course, since the people of Nanoq thought of them as allies, no alarm was raised. Yukka too was unconcerned, practicing his waterbending with Sakkari by the sea. It was not until they heard screams coming from the village that they share a look of terror and then understanding. Yukka bolts back towards home, flashes of fire visible even at a distance. Although he is concerned for his mother's whereabouts, he decides that as the village leader she likely is more than capable of protecting herself. The first firebender he comes across, he freezes them head to toe, then continues to help other villagers escape. It is difficult to focus seeing the red stains on the snow, the red of the soldiers. It was as though they did not have orders to take them alive, and the more bodies that hit the floor, the less confident Yukka felt about this endeavor.

Then a wave of water surges from beneath his feet, a flash-flood that swipes the soldiers away from him. Amka grabs her son by the shoulders and tells him to run and hide. There was no room for argument, so Yukka does as he's told, but does not stray far, wishing to keep his mother in his sights.

From the midst of all the corpses comes a familiar face. General Yu approaches Amka with a twisted expression, something human adjacent. Yukka isn't sure what it was, but it made him shudder, feeling colder than any winter they'd ever endured. The two face each other head on, but it is clear who has the upper hand. Amka is struggling against the General's flames, burning so hot that her waterbending turns into steam upon contact. Then, he issues a command.

"Bring this one alive."

When Amka hears this, she reacts quickly. From the inside of her boot she procures a hidden bone dagger. Staring up defiantly at General Yu, she offers a smirk before bringing the blade to her own throat.

It takes a moment to register that the scream ringing in his ears is his own. Yukka is not even aware he's left his hiding spot, feet carrying him to his mother, until he is holding her limp body in his arms. General Yu is saying something to him but he is far, far away. Yukka can only focus on the sight of his mother, bleeding out, a smile still plastered on her face. Consequences be damned, he shakes and cries out, desperate and angry. He won't let them get away with this, even if it means he'll go down with her.

And go down he does. He does not expect to get back up again.

prisoner

He awakes alone on his knees in a cold, dark cell. His eyes slowly adjust in the dim light coming from a single torch on the other side of the cell's door. He tries to move but finds that his arms are bound by metal braces around his wrists, suspended at 45 degree angles on either side of his head. The soreness of this position and how long he's been in it finally hits and Yukka groans as he rolls his shoulders back.

Footsteps. Each resounding sound tells him that they belong to someone taking their time, a leisurely stroll. Couldn't be a foot soldier or guard. There is a jangling of keys, the metallic click and turn, and he is graced once more with the presence of General Yu, accompanied by two soldiers, who were likely the ones posted by the door. They looked young, hardly older than himself, their too-big armor swallowing them whole. One filled it out just a tad better, standing sternly, attentive. The other was smug, too excited for a routine prisoner check.

All the General came to do was gloat about his victory. Mock Yukka's attempts to break free from his restraints at the mention of his mother. Laugh as he was threatened by the useless child. Then he opts to discipline him as a learning experience for the other two soldiers: a lesson in breaking one's will. General Yu procures a knife, but not just any knife: it is the very same blade that Amka used to end her own life, to avoid being a prisoner of the general. But if this was intended to silence the boy or enforce obedience, it sorely failed. Yukka is relentless, continuing to sputter hateful words and promises of vengeance. It is not until the deed is done, the blade having cut from cheek to forehead, the words "you take it better than your mother" having been uttered, and he is finally left alone, does he choke back a bitter sob.

He's not sure how long he's been here. Day and night are blurred, and there is no natural light in the cells. Sometimes he is conscious, other times he is not. Over time, he has less and less to say, but the feelings never go away, just remaining dormant. Waiting for an opportunity.

Yukka catches wind of some information bits now and then from gossiping soldiers. He learns that he is being detained in the Earth Kingdom—had the Fire Nation already gotten so far? He hears Sakkari's name mentioned, reassuring him that she was alive and as well as one could be as a prisoner. He learns General Yu has a son who is accomplished, and it is his favoritism towards Sakkari that has her being treated well. In a sense he is relieved, but in another he feels repulsed that she would accept anything other than hostility from her captors. Yukka would never be obedient, even as an act, in order to receive favor from Fire Nation dogs. He had his dignity.

So when he sees Sakkari appear before him, unbidden and unchained, he scoffs. He drowns out her words of assimilation for the greater good, of embracing their new start here in the colonies. She gives up with ease and leaves him to stew in his thoughts. He cannot marry the images of Sakkari in Nanoq with the Sakkari now, dressed in red garbs that suffocated her. Perhaps she planned on marrying the General's son, and she had hoped that Yukka would be able to survive and attend the wedding. Good for them, they'd be happily married with tons of little Fire Nation kids who'd grow up to continue the oppressive regime of the empire. The thought alone almost makes him gag.
