"Being a mage is more than just having the ability of one, or being able to cast spells from your fingers. And being a mage doesn't mean you're better than those who aren't. Our city almost revolves around the arcana of our powers; and we are here to discover as much as we can. And protect it with our lives-"

"Oh dear. Please don't mind my friend, Orium.

... Welcome to the College of Magi."

This is your first step into the campus, where mages seek to master their identity of magic. Almost all first years are often find themselves sitting in front of Professor Lys. Perhaps him being one of the beginning professors may cut you some slack but you've realized... he's much more difficult than you've imagined.

Study hard and work hard, could possibly be his motto regarding his worth ethics. But what he really cares about among his students is making sure is that they've realized their roles in this college and learning from it.

Of course, this is your first year. Professor Lys simply wants you to enjoy it as well. He's hard when it's about practice and studying, but he spares those that are determined.

About

Personality

Sly and quick-witted, Ulysses deems his role as a teacher and mentor to the little mages who find their future through their magical abilities. However, loyalty, nor patriotism fit his business agenda and it seems that only fairness exists in his eyes. Experience has taught him to seek lasting results rather than try to maintain lofty ideals. And he will do anything within his power to obtain these same results in order to help benefit his students. Underhanded tactics are not above his stature; if he feels they give succor to his cause he will use them. Should he meet failure he simply hops to another creative possibility which interests him.
The Professor approaches people with a relaxed, honest and somewhat cynical temperament. His words may have no apparent malice, but they often rouse a feeling of weary caution to those around him - especially those he disfavors and those who go against his teachings. Lys talks with a snappy rhythm and tends to phrase things of amused acknowledgement. Ulysses, although a professor who teaches solely first-years, is acknowledged multiple times throughout the Cathal kingdom for his immense intellect, including its beloved leaders.

History

Ulysses is born under a complicated circumstance; born under two mothers, Lyria Saxe and Moira Louise, through the use of magic. However, under complications from both sides of the family, he and one of his mothers were separated to live in a lovely grandeur of their noble home of Saxe. While his second parent moved away, whose home lived closer to the walls of Cathal - an area that resides with the common people and even poverty-stricken families.

He was a gifted child of magic, who was well on his way to becoming the city’s Royal Advisor at the request of the Saxe family. He hastily made his way to the College of Magic, but most of his abilities were held back as he claimed he didn’t want to be “the most powerful mage” in the city.
He’d realize this whenever he and Lyria would sneak out of the Saxe noble homes to visit his commoner-blood mother - who respectfully works as a tavern maid. Lys never wanted to be compared greater than the commoner man, hence he held back most of his magical abilities when he was at the College of Magic, as a student. He allowed someone else to take the role while he quietly studied his powers independently and under the radar. And by the time he graduated, he took both the Saxe and Louise as his name, criticizing the unfairness and cruelty of the nobility side of his life.

After graduation, he drafted himself as one of the army’s battle mages that sought to protect Cathal’s walls from oncoming enemies. He worked endlessly to make sure every living near the walls were safe from potential danger of both noble arrogance and outside casualties. But the fight against several of these things cost him a leg. Losing a leg didn’t bother him too much, as it was fixed through his magical prowess.
Yet the casualties scarred him from continuing his war efforts and the army had offered forgiveness and graciously provided him an opportunity to continue his use of magic to future students who enter the College.

The college was filled with people of both noble and common grounds - and Professor Lys only hopes he can use his teachings to create a class filled with equal opportunities. Since then, he’s never left his position as a Professor - no matter how many people offered him different opportunities with better pay and a better life solely for his powers and intelligence.

The story Now:

Although he swears he’ll spend his whole life as a Professor, he cannot help but research anything new in the magic world. If he wasn’t teaching, then he’d be in his office or his home - researching and writing essays regarding his experimental designs he came up with on the fly.

There were several things that went wrong with some of his experiments. Such as his body now officially cursed and the glowing markings that covered his body would almost be impossible to remove. Yet, the curse and the glowing marks that covered him are still unknown to him now, but it does practically nothing to him… yet. Then during his vacation days while the school was on a seasonal break - he ventured outside of Cathal and stumbled upon a magical artifact; turning him into a hat. Eventually the artifact gives him plenty of things for him to study about - the only downside to said artifact is that it has a life of its own. The hat he wears now speaks on its own accord, and Lys has to constantly keep it on his head or else his home and/or office would be engulfed in flames.

The Professor has been a mentor to a notable child - whose retreats himself away from the crowd of newcomers. Zoe, his protege, is a shy young man who lives with his father - the infamous Librarian that oversees the grand Librarium, but also the son of the Vampiric Gatekeeper who lives outside of Cathal’s walls. And regardless of his bloodline, Zoe has been the most excellent student the Professor has ever seen. Although shy, Grimbald-Castral is a kind gentleman with a warm heart - the mindset about him is that he can’t do anything but help his classmates. Now Zoe is to Graduate quite soon, the Professors offer Zoe a temporary job of becoming his assistant with magical research; something that Lys does on the side for his amusement.

But in reality, he simply wants to keep Zoe by his side.

Trivia

  • A Professor who teaches first-year students in college. He’s well liked among students.
    > He teaches a variety of subjects. But he commonly teaches the subject of spell casting of both offensive and defensive mechanisms.
    > Likes to teach very obscure spells. Such as summoning different foods or learning how to summon a goblin from the depths of hell. They vary.
    > Often rewards his favorite students with sweets that he gets from a nearby bakery.
    > Students that do not listen to him will simply be sent to the void for only a few minutes or pull them back whenever he feels there is a sense of danger impending towards them. The other professors are rather upset as to how he deals with it.

  • The cursed marks all throughout his body are unknown to him, but he's on a constant watch and he and the other researchers are studying them.
    > Although completely harmless, there would be a regular occurrence of nightmares since he's had them. Most of them regarding his experience as a battle mage.
    > The markers act like a form of magical armor, solely to protect its host.

  • Almost all mages would have a single jewel that helps them properly control their powerful magic within them. But because of Lys's using himself as a magical guinea pig for all of his spell-related experiments, he has about 5 jewels to keep his body in control.
    > Has 2 jewels hanging around his hat. Two on his rings, and then one more placed somewhere on his pauldron

  • His hat talks. His name is Orium.
    > Orium is a rambunctious, angry entity that was stored in the Professor’s hat after he was awakened after a couple hundred-thousand years.
    > Whenever Lys puts his hat down, Orium would take the opportunity to light fires - because that’s really all Orium can do until he can escape.
    > If he’s happy, Orium will share Lys any missing magical secrets that Cathal fails to find throughout history.
    > Orium likes to talk over Lys… alot. He’s rather crude.

    > The only way to make Orium satisfied if he was fed humans. But Lys is against that and simply feeds Orium his second-most favorite thing to eat: sweet rolls.

Zoe [ Assistant ]

He is not his student anymore, but both him and Lys look up at each other in admiration. The professor would never think of finding someone like Zoe, hence he feels rather lonely realizing that him and Zoe will be going on their separate ways the moment he graduates. Therefore, before Grimbald-Castral would attend his lasting ceremony and leaving the College, the professor finds himself taking the young man under his arm as his personal assistant in his researches.

Saurin  [ Friendly Rivalry ]

Of course, no mage would not be impressed with Saurin's powers. But Ulysses thinks that if he ever did pave his way into becoming Cathal's royal advisor, then he believes that he could do just a little better. The Professor won't ever say that he's better than the current Royal Advisor, but it's only sometimes that he doubts Saurin's abilities - let alone his magical knowledge. Because that's where he can prove that he's better than the most powerful mage in the kingdom.

Caliban  [ Friend ]

To simply put it, it's not hard for a man like the Professor to be friends with the Librarian - solely for his love of reading. Whenever there's new finding in the magical subject, then for sure the both of them are the first to know about it. They exchange, collect, and record different information that's new to them. However, what the Librarian doesn't know is that the Professor has taken a liking for his shy, gifted child. He's rather afraid that all of his limbs will be twisted instantly the moment Caliban finds out about his thoughts towards Zoe.

Jack [WIP] [ Enemy ? ]

It is known that Worthing has long retired from his former profession. But still, the title "Magekiller" still makes Ulysses a bit uncomfortable, if not angry, that this man has killed a few of his acquaintances, and even some of his close friends during their younger years. Regardless if they became corrupted, Ulysses believes that it would still have been prevented if Jack had not slain them.
