Alexandria was raised completely as a princess and a future heir to her kingdom. Her mother had passed while she was a child so she was raised by a single father... and a whole palace worth of caretakers, tutors, and staff. Her kingdom had always been thriving and peaceful for her whole life and she knew very little about life outside of the palace.  When she was 17 her father died. He had been old and had a child later in life, so it was unfortunate but not unexpected. The kingdom was handed over to her step mother until she came of age.  While Alexandria grieved, the kingdom had not had any major changes in how it was ruled. Her stepmother seemed to do a good job at managing the kingdom so the peace continued. When Alexandria was 18 there came an issue of finding a suitor for their prospective queen. Alexandria had quickly dismissed any arrangement that came to her. She was repulsed by the idea of being forced to marry and produce an heir. She even refused to be arranged with a female partner and have them surrogate an heir. This led to a huge argument with her stepmother about how there HAS to be an heir to the throne, and if Alexandria refused to marry then the family line would die out. It came to an ultimatum: either Alexandria would marry and produce an heir, or the stepmother would remarry, produce an heir, and continue to be queen.  Alexandria left the kingdom in exile and handed it over to her stepmother. She wandered out into the plains to try and find a place to live beyond her old kingdom. She failed miserably and got attacked by wild animals, had all her supplies ravaged, and was left limping around half naked in the middle of nowhere.

That is when she met Kai. He saw her condition and opened his home to her. He had lived out in the plains sustainably for his whole life, and he would allow her to live with him as long as she helped him out. Alexandria had never worked a day in her life and acted like a prissy little shit for months, but eventually grew accustomed to life with Kai.  However, this was turmoil in the kingdom. The new queen had remarried and produced an heir, but there was something the Queen hadn't known about. The rulers of the kingdom had a pact with a deity where each new ruler had to keep an enchanted heirloom that brought everlasting peace and prosperity to their kingdom. The deities lifeforce relied on rituals involving this ring. A ring that had gone with Alexandria. The ring allowed the deity to inhabit the user, and take over their form. It was supposed to be revealed to her by the deity when she inherited the throne, but she never did. The kingdom was outraged and believed that the misfortune was caused by the Queen being shit at her job, and demanded Alexandria's return now that she was of age.  They searched all over for their lost princess, until one day she was found while her and Kai had been at the outskirts of the kingdom trading goods with market vendors. They pleaded with her to come back, and she decided to return only to formally resign. There would be a grand ball held in her honor, because the kingdom thought she would come back for good. But the Queen refused to let her kingdom be taken from her and planned to steal Alexandria's ring and have her killed.  As she was announcing her resignation the assassination attempt was in progress. She would be struck dead by magic at the end of her speech, right after what the Queen assumed would be her taking the kingdom back. No one would be able to contest that Alexandria was dead or that the Queen was the rightful heir.

What the queen doesn't know is that the Deity inhabiting Alexandria's ring would take over and rampage when Alexandria was in mortal danger. She transformed into a large magical beast, and began to destroy the castle. The queen is killed in the wreckage, and the spirit runs off in Alexandria's body. Kai runs after her, and brings her back to her senses after her rampage. 

Alexandria still has no intention to rule the kingdom, so she hand's it over to the queens heir, and makes a deal with the deity that she will continue to bare the ring, as well as letting the deity possess her body on the new moon. She continues to live with Kai, and each month they must deal with the Deity taking over.
