Koja's parents separated when he was in middle school, and he went to live with his Mom while his younger sibling, Kris, lived with his Dad. This separated the two, who had previously been close, and Koja took up a rebellious attitude. His grades were slipping, he was sneaking out at night and skipping class, and he was fighting with his mom often. During one of their fights on the way home from school, Koja's mother got into a fatal car crash, which he has always blamed himself for.
Koja went to live with his dad and was reunited with Kris. Their father was very strict and conservative, and would fight often with his kids about how they should presenting and acting as a "proper young man and lady". Koja continued to do things like dye his hair, wear eyeliner, and paint his nails, as well as encouraging Kris to indulge in the masculine habits they preferred, and the two were often harshly punishes for it.
In school Koja became friends with Kosuvo and Desuva, boys a grade ahead of him. Koja and Kosuvo shared in a fiery and punkish attitude, and became best of friends. They were both troubled youths, and often did dumb and minorly illegal things together, getting Koja in even more trouble with his dad. But the most trouble came when the two started dating. Koja's dad is extremely homophobic, and when he caught the two kissing he told Koja that if he ever "acted like a f*g" in his house again, he'd kick him out on the street. The pressure of having to hide the relationship became too much, and the two broke up.
Kosuvo and Koja remained friends, and when a new transfer moved in with Kosuvo, he joined their group of friends. The new boy, Cody, fit in great and they all became close.
One day Koja and his father were fighting, as usual, and his dad made a comment about how he's so glad Koja's hanging out with Upstanding Young Men like Desuva and Cody, making snide remarks about Kosuvo for being queer, and Koja snapped. He screamed about how he was gay and always going to be gay and his dad would have to deal with it, and he was thrown out of the house that night.

Koja panicked about what to do, but was able to stay with Cody and Kosuvo for a period of time while he sorted himself out. He ended up having to drop out of school to work extra hours and make ends meet, but eventually all three of them were working and had enough money to move out together.
After Desuva and Kosuvo finished highschool, the two of them moved in together closer to Desuva's college, leaving Cody and Koja alone together. Koja became stressed about paying the bills while Cody was still in school so he didn't have to also drop out, and his maladaptive coping mechanisms lead to the two fighting, with a huge topic that kept coming up being Cody insisting on being straight and only attracted to women and Koja. He was not able to name one woman.
Soon after Cody finished highschool, Koja's younger sibling, Kris, was also kicked out, and came to stay with them. Cody and Koja decided to put their fighting aside and really get their shit together to be there for Kris during this really hard time in their life. They end up getting married and moving into a connected double apartment with Kosuvo and Desuva, where all four of then split the bills and help take care of Kris so they can have the supportive upbringing that the four boys couldn't.
