At 43 Delphinium married his literary agent, William. 12 years later, while Delphinium was pregnant with their first litter, William died in an accident of some sort. Devastated, widowed, and pregnant, Delphinium and William's best friend Copper ended up leaning on each other for support, Copper helping (along with Delphinium's family) to raise his three daughters (Marianne, Elizabeth, and Jane). As they grew closer their relationship began to progress, but conflicted by grief and guilt they didn't take the jump to getting married until one of his daughters complained that they couldn't just call Copper "Mom".
