Name: Dalain (Dal-eyn)
Age: 34 years old

Height/Weight: 6'10" / 240 lbs

PERSONALITY:

Cocky | Laid-back | Friendly | Straight-Forward | Devoted | Loyal | Brash | Brazen | Shallow | Flirtatious
Dalain is a man fueled by determination. Determination to succeed and exceed expectations, determination to grow stronger, and determination to live. Despite a rather disgraced childhood as the son of a disabled single father, the Makar has grown to convert that insecurity into a powerful, sometimes thick-headed sense of will. He is the manifestation of reckless abandon; running headfirst into challenges and new experiences and never questioning what falls into his lap. He accepts things as simply as they are--whether that is falling in love, being gay in a culture that forbids it, or finding himself in the company of strange tiny and disturbingly hairless beings on the mainland. Despite his size and sometimes gruff attitude, Dalain is quite possibly one of the purest souls one can meet. He is averse to deception, virtually incapable of it, and is unflinchingly loyal to those he has aligned himself with.

After the death of his lover, the Makar fell into a deep depression for a time, to the point that he wished to die. But with time he realized the error of this mindset, the selfishness of it, and has since decided to live on in honor of Sumaer. When he is not being lazy, crass, or a little daft, Dalain is facing the world's challenges with a smile.

HISTORY:

Dalain was raised by his father, his other parent, an enehr Makar, having died when Dalain was still a baby. It was not an uncommon set of circumstances for any Makar, save for the fact that his father was disabled. The man was blind and physically weak due to injuries taken in his younger years, and among the Makar, deemed a worthless body. As a result, their small family was virtually invisible to the rest of their kind. Dalain was picked on as a child, teased for who his father was, and it led Dalain to leave his father's home as soon as he was able--upon the approach of his coming of age. He trained as a warrior, focusing more on brute strength and weaponry over mastering feral forms, and sought to some day earn a place in the King's Saber.

But the condition of his father was not the Makar's only disadvantage. As he grew older, Dalain quickly came to realize he was not 'the norm'. His desire for women was non-existent, and he knew very well that what he did desire would not be accepted. He did attempt to endure for some time, indulging in clandestine encounters that 'never happened', but for such an honest man, it was not a life he wanted to live. He'd been taunted enough in his lifetime for circumstances beyond his control. In a time when few Makar even contemplated the Other world, Dalain chose to leave.

The mainland was strange and foreign, but fortunately it was not a challenge for Dalain to learn how to communicate. He traveled for a time, trying to find purpose for himself now that his goals of the Saber were impossible. It was in his travels that he encountered a Vieka named Sumaer by chance, challenging the beast that he initially assumed a threat. Sumaer overpowered Dalain with little effort, and Dalain was immediately smitten. The pair shared company for a time--Sumaer was unused to not being feared--and a natural chemistry developed swiftly. This random encounter evolved into passion, love, a partnership. But Sumaer was a Vieka, a deserter to his kind, and several run-ins with confrontational Vieka led Sumaer to realize he would not be safe forever. Despite knowing non-Vieka were not welcome, Dalain decided to travel with Sumaer to a pacifist Vieka commune, where he knew he would be safe, even if he could not be with him. Unfortunately, in their travels, while Dalain was visiting a nearby village for supplies, Sumaer was found by a pack of Vieka and killed.

It was a crippling blow. Dalain was devastated--guilty and enraged. He mourned the loss of his lover for some time, so deeply depressed that he wanted nothing more than to join Sumaer in the second life. However, too proud to take his own life, he willingly went with recruiters who sought to use his brawn in gritty gladiator battles, where he hoped to be slain by a superior opponent. But he continued to succeed, again and again, until finally, after nearly being defeated by a golem, something clicked. He was an imbecile, throwing his life away; pitying himself. Sumaer would have been ashamed. Dalain's perspective changed, suddenly determined to escape this place, and fortunately it was not too much longer before he was approached by Braddock, who wanted his help with an escape plan. The two faked a mutual defeat in the arena and managed to slip from the arena, fleeing from those who sought to recapture. They were not the closest of allies in the beginning, more frequently bickering and calling each other names, but as time went on, Dalain came to realize he was fond of the tiny little sapling.

NOTES

  • Unlike most Makar who master 3-4 feral forms in their lifetime, Dalain focused more on his brawn. He has mastered the form of a grizzly bear and, later on, the Hawaiian Hawk.
  • He's adept at the use of a broad sword, as well as a bow and arrow and smaller knives.
  • Dalain does not openly speak of his father, but he will also not deny who he is. Its a topic he doesn't particularly enjoy dwelling on.
  • Like all Makar, Dalain is exceptionally strong and also capable of communicating with wildlife/nature.
