"I’m not sure I’d call what I’m doing ‘living’. ‘Surviving’ is more like it. Can’t say I’m really enjoying it either, but I’m too much of a coward to let myself die."
―Owen

Owen is the primary Central Command Team captain. The player meets him on Day 21 when Central Command opens up

Owen is a tall, handsome man with strong features. He has knowing grey-green eyes, and long teal hair that reaches to the end of his shoulder blades. Half of it is pulled up into a ponytail at the back of his head, and has large fluffy bangs, with a larger one on the left side of his face. He’s well-built from constant work with abnormalities and he has broad shoulders.

Because he’s the Captain, and one of the more skilled employees no matter how he acts, Owen is assigned to abnormalities of almost all difficulties from ALEPH to TETH and is usually called in to help with other abnormalities if there’s an emergency. However, because he’s a former musician he gets along very with music-related abnormalities such as El Llanto de La Luna and The Silent Orchestra. Especially El Llanto de La Luna he seems to feel some sort of connection although he would deny that if asked.
He keeps getting into weird contests of wills with Silent Orchestra which can be a problem if Owen is left to his own devices.
The Snow Queen was the first abnormality that Owen ever worked with and remains one that he feels a connection with because of it.

Personality

Owen is a mess. He comes off as irreverent and more than a bit eccentric. Friendly and personable to the other members of his team, he has a lot of charisma but doesn’t really seem to take anything too seriously either. He’s been known to greet new members of the department with an incredibly warm and friendly ‘Welcome to Hell’, much to their complete alarm and confusion. At times he’s rather dramatic, like leaning against a wall theatrically after an ordeal declaring how exhausted he is, only to be up and clearly fine moments later. Yet he’s obviously skilled despite the theatrics and never actually refuses his duty. He might complain, but he is reliable.

Though as personable as he is at first glance, he’s a bit aloof with his team at times and doesn’t appear to have close relationships to any of them. He’s slightly better with his fellow captains, but internal he’s scared to make attachments to those in his department. Getting close to them would hurt worse when they died. He does his best to minimize casualties but he knows he can’t prevent all of them.
Or at least that’s what he tells himself. While working at Lobotomy has made it worse, even before he joined the company he had become wary of forming close relationships. At the beginning of his rather impressive music career he’d attracted a lot of attention, gaining fans and friends eager to follow him. Once his raising star started to fall however, a great many of his new ‘friends’ disappeared, and none of them seemed to be willing to help when the was at his lowest. As a consequence, he’s developed a cynical part of himself that doesn’t let himself get to close to others. He’s convinced himself that he’s not lonely, only a realist, especially in Lobotomy. It’s easier to not get close to anyone than to bear the pain when they eventually leave him.

His irreverent attitude seems to be part of that defense. In as horrible a place as Lobotomy can be, if he looks at things to closely or takes them to seriously it will drive him insane. He’s described himself as a ‘coward who doesn’t want to die’, and he’s willing to do what he has to in order to achieve that. He’s pushed himself to very good at defending himself for that reason, and actually has a stronger mind than one would think. Though sometimes other people doubt his claims, especially when people think he’s far too casual with most of the Sephirot, even going so far as to flirt playfully with some of them. He’s not serious about it, and everyone knows this. If he was ever serious about it any point he’s swift to hide it and pretend it was only part of his usual banter.

There’s also a part of him that refuses to accept anything in the world as being truly free. No one gives you anything or does anything for you without expecting something in return. Whether it be money or time, you will have to ‘pay’ at some point. Sometimes he tries to just do things for people before they can do something for him and then demand more than he can give.

Internally, at leat, Owen is sometimes willing to admit that his own bad, and often hasty decisions are what landed him in Lobotomy Corporation. He tended to let his ego do the talking when he was younger, and was desperate to prove himself on the music scene. Half of what he did was desperately trying to make himself match what he thought he could do in his head, and he was very bad at actually asking for help. After hyping himself up so much, he didn’t think he would survive telling others that he couldn’t keep up with what he said he could do. Most of his ego has been beaten out of him since his fall from grace in the public eye and arrival at Lobotomy but a smidgen still remains.

Still, once he grows attached to something, Owen finds it hard to really give it up. Owen is also incredibly intelligent, at least in a booksmart sense. Once he actually bothers to put his full focus on something he usually learns it very fast, it’s just finding something that interests him that can be the hard part. He had excellent grades in school, and sailed up through highschool fairly easily.

Music holds a lot of emotions and memories for Owen. He grew up around. Was trained in it, and has a lot of good moments attached to it, but it was his music career that led to his downfall. Although he enjoys music privately, he doesn’t sing in public anymore and gently brushes off requests from the other employees that manage to recognize his face or name from his brief moment in the spotlight. There are very few people that he will actually sing for currently.

Story

History

Owen was born in the music district, to parents that had managed to create successful careers of their own in the business. Although not unkind, they were distant and busy trying to maintain their hold on the cutthroat industry they were in. Still, Owen grew up mostly in comfort, and showed his intelligence early on. He sailed through most of school, getting good grades easily when it suited him to put forth the effort, and managing to make friends. No one was that surprised when Owen got into a university, especially since he had taken the idea that he wouldn’t be able too as an insult. He did attend for a time, but then he had a conversation with one of the younger musicians his parents knew. The musician told him that it was a good thing that he had chosen to go to university, because he didn’t seem to have inherited his parents’ talent for music so couldn’t have made it a career anyway.
It was more of an off-the-cuff remark than meant as insult, but Owen took it at once. After stewing on it for a month, he dropped out of school and announced it was going to follow in his parents’ footsteps. His parents were shocked, but then shrugged and accepted it. Eventually, with the help of a skilled song-writer and some of his parents' other connections, he made his debut with much fanfare.
He proved to be a hit. A star. His popularity skyrocketed. His song seemed to be everywhere and everyone knew his face. Suddenly he had went from being almost entirely unknown to being everyone’s darling. It was intoxicating to him. More and more people wanted to see him, and he felt as if he was on top of the world. But after the first rush, his career started to slow, and his popularity started to fall. And fall. And fall. He managed to regain some minor public interest when he released a few new songs, but nothing he tried would regain the sort of popularity he had enjoyed at first. In fact he seemed to fade more and more from the public eye quicker than he would have thought. Desperately he tried to scramble after something, anything he could do. The new friends that had showed up slowly started to fade away, some chasing new raising stars, some just shrugging and moving on to other things
As his popularity dropped, his income dropped, and suddenly Owen realized that the much improved lifestyle he had been enjoying wasn’t something he was going to be able to sustain. Yet if he didn’t keep up appearances, any shot he had at regaining the smallest scrap of notoriety would vanish. The few people who might be willing to give him another chance would vanish, assuming that he had already given up. In order to fund his lifestyle he started borrowing money. Over the next few years he tried desperately to find a way to claw himself back up. There were a few moments where he regained some measure of fame, but it all ended up slipping through his fingers.
In the end he was all but faded from the general publics’ mind, unless his music happened to be broadcast again, he was earning barely any money but in massive debt. Then as if fate had decided it hadn’t toyed with him enough, a single misstep brought him to the displeased attention of a syndicate.
As he realized his doom was about to fall on him, Owen frantically started looking for any way to get out of this. The few people he might still call friends were helpless and nervous about even talking with him. His family’s connections, that had seemed so useful in the past were now able to do nothing. Almost numb with terror, his exhausted mind could only think that needed to find somewhere to hide, somewhere he could be *safe*. He just couldn’t figure out where or how that could work. How did you hide from a Syndicate when they were connected to everything you knew? He need something or someone that was too powerful, too large, for even them to bother.
That was when he was hit with an idea. What if he sought shelter under one of the Wings of the World? If he was a part of one of those companies, then it would be far to risky, or at least far to much trouble, for the Syndicate to be able to reach him. Plus, he realized, it was a way to salvage the last tatters of his reputation. Make it into one of the Wings, and suddenly he wasn’t a failed musician anymore. Suddenly, he was a musician who had given up his previous career in order to accept a much more prestigious position in one of the Wings. After all, what sane person would refuse an honor like that, no matter how passionate they were about music?
Oh it might be risking, he knew that. But at the same time better to take some risk then face death or worse if he did nothing. So ,ignoring the small part of him that wondered if a university-dropout with a fading career even had a chance, he set out to save his own life.
He found himself accepted into Lobotomy Corporation and felt a rush of relief. His wild ploy had worked. Now, he finally had a chance to breathe.

Plot

Ahahah, just notes while I get this part organized and add more
-Surprise, surprise, Owen’s happiness didn’t last long because he wasn’t expecting Lobotomy Corporation. He’d just traded one hell or another. Seeing abnormalities for the first time nearly broke him. But, he realized that at least there was a chance here. If he wanted to live, he would just have to make sure he got very good, very fast.
-Became surprisingly good at dealing with abnormalities much tho his own private shock, though he acted like it was no big deal in public.
Was bounced around departments for a while after he completed his initial training Spent more time in Information than any other place. Kind of teased Yesod because his reactions were funny, and then it kind of turned into more….teasingly flirty? And maybe leaning more towards outright flirting but he was going to pretend that it wasn’t that serious.
- Yesod sputtered about it, and just seemed to ignore most of it, but after a while he and Owen seemed to start to really get along, and developed a sort of bond that might have a bit of tension there but neither of them was willing to actually do anything about it, and then Owen was transferred again.
-Owen wasn’t completely happy with this, but hey, they were in the same company and he was sure he could see him. Making excuses to go do things like visit Information? He was good at that.
-The whole thing with James hit the fan while Owen was dealing with the transfer though, and by the time he heard what had happened and headed over, Yesod just...pushed him away hard. He would tell something was off about Yesod, but at the same time part of Owen was used to people getting tired of him and just accepted it, like it wasn’t a big deal to him even though it hurt.
-Eventually he ended up in Central Command, and was appointed primary captain. He’s good at getting people to listen to him and organized.
-Still has friends up in Information though, and makes excuses to go up to visit them. If he happens to glance over at Yesod and stare at him a little when he’s not looking, well, it’s not like anyone has ever caught him at it.
-He does still flirt playfully with Yesod...but he also does the same thing with all of the other Sepherah, who know better than to take him seriously, since he does mean it. And if he does still mean it with Yesod? You really can’t tell.
-WIP .

Trivia

  • Owen can play both the piano and the violin.
  • Has been accused of arguing music theory with abnormalities before.
  • Moonlight is both a weapon and a prop to Owen. He twirls it around. He uses it for dramatic gestures, and has been known to tap or poke people with it to get their attention. He's used it to pull things closer to him when he can't be assed to get out of a chair. It's to the point where most of his team thinks of it as part of him and is a bit weirded out if he takes up a different weapon.
