"It's not you. I'm just... I'm bad. I'm bad at this people thing."

Introverted book nerd extraordinaire.

Anna is a straight-A student with undeniable smarts. The girl can recite Plath and Dickinson at the drop of a hat, and will read pretty much anything from non-fiction to the classics. She's got a way with the written word, but whenever it's time to communicate with her peers and socialize, her words get jumbled up and she forgets how to speak.

At first glance Anna might appear calm and collected, but the truth is, she's painfully shy and quite awkward around new people. Anna hates that she's this way and often wishes she could be more outgoing like her brother. She's tried the trademark Flynn approach of being friendly and striking up conversations, but after a series of trial and error, has come to the conclusion that she's just no good at making small talk or leaving good first impressions.

Anna really wants to be braver and more outgoing, but she needs quite a bit of prodding and encouragement to get her out of her shell. It might take awhile - and quite a bit of effort - to get to know her, but once Anna opens up to a person she becomes more relaxed and easy-going around them. Those who manage to befriend Anna realize that she's does try very hard to step out of her comfort zone. Mostly this comes in the form of baby steps, but she's hardworking and determined, and even though it's not apparent at first, possesses a quiet sort of strength and stability.

The Night of the Summer Festival

A few weeks before the Summer Festival (sometime after Mr. Brown had gone missing), Anna found a scruffy looking black cat outside her house. She gave the cat some milk, and feeling sorry for him, ended up taking him off the streets and adopting him. Anna named him Pluto, unaware that he was the World Eater in disguise - the very source of the missing people phenomena and strange possessions going on in their idyllic town.

After taking Pluto in, Anna begins to receive strange, vision like dreams about the end of the world.

The Kingdom of Sol

Unlike her brother and his friends, Anna doesn't get involved in Sol until much later.

Anna is initially suspicious of Flynn's after school activities, but she doesn't find out about Sol until her brother's near brush with death during The Carnival Arc.

A week or so before Flynn's accident, she'd wrestled with dreams of Flynn dying. Anna didn't dare take the dreams seriously until she found out her brother was in the emergency room. During The Carnival Arc, Flynn gets pushed off a two-storey merry-go-round by one of the fair's possessed employees. He breaks a leg and suffers a concussion, and has to put his defender duties on hold while he recovers.

During Flynn's hospital stay, Anna finds out about Sol from Aislyn and demands to join the Defenders. Aislyn turns her away on account of Flynn not wanting his sister to get involved, and Anna is angered and upset by the decision. The dreams continue.

Anna eventually joins the defenders when she, Mori, and Dan are attacked by a possessed dog. They end up having to run it over with Dan's car to save themselves. After the Defenders find Anna, Mori, and Dan, traumatized by the recent events, they have to explain the entire ordeal regarding The World Eater, The Kingdom of Sol, and the upcoming end of the world.

When Anna accepts her role as one of the Defenders, she's told that she has already been given the gift of Future Sight and that it's manifested through her dreams. Eventually Anna learns to use her gift while she's awake. Anna's future sight isn't definite and only gives her insight into probable outcomes.

Oakwoods and Backstory

  • A small, idyllic city somewhere in the USA. It is a 30 minute drive away from the much more bustling city of Grenfall, and a two hour drive away from the Tuna Capital, Goldshore. In Oakwoods, pretty much everyone knows everyone.

  • Anna was born and raised in Oakwoods , and lived with her mother, father, and her older brother Flynn. However when she was seven-years-old, her dad cheated on her mom with a co-worker of his and was promptly kicked out of their home. A divorce followed shortly after the incident, and ever since then, it's just been Flynn, Anna, and their mom in their house.

  • Recently her dad has been making attempts to get back in touch with her and her brother. Anna desperately wants to give him another chance, but Flynn is adamant about it.

  • Anna also went to Littlewood Elementary School. She's 2 years younger than Flynn but only a year behind him at school. When the Sol Arc starts she's a junior at Oakwoods High School.

Trivia

Likes
  • Books. Anna is a voracious reader and will read anything from poetry to fiction to nonfiction. She's especially fond of the classics and horror novels. Her favorite authors are Edgar Allan Poe, Sylvia Plath, and Mary Shelly.

  • Conspiracy theories. Anna loves them and will shed her shyness to explain why she believes certain theories are correct.

  • School. She's an A+ student and actually enjoys all of her subjects. She's smart and knows it. Sometimes Flynn asks her to help him with book reports and math.

  • Board game nights with her brother. She beats him 9 out of 10 times and loves it.

  • Animals. Anna has a soft spot for them. It's the reason she adopted Pluto.
Dislikes
  • Large social gatherings. Anna has always found them somewhat suffocating. They tend to leave her feeling drained.

  • Mori's idea of research. 9/10 times the idea involves trespassing and roaming around spooky abandoned houses. Anna enjoys conspiracies and research, but she'd rather not break the law. She's a stickler for rules, but Mori has a way of convincing her to break them.

  • Flynn's cooking. Her brother makes great sandwiches, but he can't cook anything else. He burns things often.

  • When she's kept out of the loop. This becomes quite apparent after Flynn is injured in the carnival arc.

Flynn Barker

[ older brother ] Anna knows that no matter what happens, Flynn will always look out for her. He practically babysat her 24/7 when their dad walked out of their lives and their mom had to work overtime to make ends meet. The two of them are very close and have become one another's confidantes. Anna thinks he frets over her a little too much and that he can be quite overprotective, but she appreciates everything Flynn does for her. She knows his worrying comes from a place of love.

Bree Watts

[ childhood friend ] One of the few people Anna is completely comfortable around. She's known Bree since she was a four, and maybe that's one of the reasons, they never had to go through an awkward introduction phase. They've always been friends, that's just the way it's been. Bree has a mature and level-vibe to her that makes her easy to approach and talk to. Anna finds her friend's presence rather calming, and feels as if she can tell Bree anything.

Morrigan Elliot

[ best friend ] Trouble with a capital T. From an outsider's perspective their friendship doesn't make sense - Mori is chaotic and unpredictable, and all of the things that make Anna want to retreat to a corner somewhere, and yet, the friendship works.

In a way Mori is the driving force that pushes Anna to be braver. She's assertive and tows the line between encouraging and annoying while still managing to respect her friend's boundaries. It's because of Mori that Anna eventually joins the "journalism" club and befriends Freddy, and it's because of Mori's encouragement that she eventually musters up the courage to demand the truth about Sol from her brother's friends.

Aislyn Kaye

[ childhood friend ] Similar to Mori, Aislyn is one of the people who pushes Anna to take risks and try new things. Aislyn is less adamant about it, in comparison to Mori, and Anna takes comfort in this. The fiery redhead can be a bit overwhelming at times, but Anna knows Aislyn goes out of her way to tone things down. Despite their clashing personalities, the two are quite close and often watch movies together.

Friday Goodman

[ friend, book buddy ] Anna finds Friday's endless energy and cheer - while endearing - a little bit daunting, and as a result, she isn't as close to him as she is to Aislyn and Bree. The two are friends, but the foundation of their friendship mostly rests on their shared loved for literature and art. They share notes and talk about classics from time to time, and during the events of the Sol arc, Anna comes to realize that Friday is more reliable than he seems. They end up becoming better friend because of it.

Pluto (The World Eater)

[ pet, eventual big bad ] A scruffy looking cat Anna adopted off the streets. She adores him and spoils him rotten with milk and cat treats. She named him Pluto after Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat.

Anna is blissfully unaware that The World Eater in disguise is living under her roof, and when she finally finds out about Pluto's true identity, she feels horribly betrayed.
