Valerian Silvanus
masculine | forest god

About :

Valerian Silvanus was born as the guardian of the forest. From the beginning of time, he was there, born as the first tree sprouted through the dirt. He and the forest were born as one and share the same souls. You see, if all of the forests die, so does he. If a tree is harmed, he feels it within him. Valerian Silvanus isn't just connected to nature, he is nature.

The god is very serene and peaceful. While he has power, there is one thing the god lacks, and that is a voice. Valerian was born without the ability to speak, however, he isn't completely a lost cause. He uses the trees and nature around him to communicate. When the leaves rustle, when the river trickles, when the frog croaks, that is him speaking and reaching out

On most days, the god spends his days wandering and communicating with the forest. He is never seen within the same forest for very long, and tends to travel. In truth, there isn't much Silvanus hasn't explored. He is known to be one of the kinder gods, however, he isn't as easily seen nor summoned. Valerian is only seen when he wants to be; a sighting of this god is considered to be highly rare.

History :

There is nothing special about Valerian Silvanus. His story is simple for a god. You see, when the very first tree sapling had sprouted in the world, that was when Silvanus was born. He had no mother, no father, no family. He simply appeared from thin air. From the start, Silvanus, it seemed, was all alone. He knew that he had a destiny, but what it was, he was unsure. What he did know was that nobody would help him. He needed to figure out his role all alone. Over time, that tree sapling grew, and with it, Silvanus felt himself grow stronger as well. He was connected to this tree and found that if he harmed it, the pain would reflect back onto himself.

That single tree soon became a forest, and as each new tree grew, so did Silvanus and his powers. His destiny, he found, was to protect the trees. When he walked, grass would sprout at his feet and flowers would grow in the places he touched. No, he wasn't the protector of the trees, but nature as a whole. He understood it, and it understood him. Many times, Silvanus wished to speak to it aloud, but alas, the god had no voice. However, he found that when he tried to speak, the leaves rustled and the branches bent. He had his own language, and unfortunately nobody but himself understood it. That is, until he met another. A mortal female, living her life within the first pack ever created. How beautiful she was and how free-spirited. Devina was what she was called, and for the first time in hundreds of years, Silvanus was drawn to her.

Living for centuries without company was lonely, so upon the sight of a creature similar in appearance to himself, Silvanus was naturally intruiged. He presented himself to this mortal. Fearing she'd turn away in fear like most encountered, but was surprised when, instead, she observed with curiosity. Devina, this mortal, seemed to understand him. She seemed to understand what he was, and that when the trees rustled, it was Silvanus' doing. She knew that when the currents in the river increased, it was Silvanus. She knew his secret language, and she embraced it. They two grew close, and Silvanus, it was clear, loved her, and she him. The two grew a family. Three pups, two males and a female, none of which inherited any powers. They were mortal, like their mother. How they adored their children. However, time is a cruel thing for mortals, something Silvanus learned quickly.

Over the years, Silvanus watched their children grow.. Watched how how over the years, Devina's beautiful grey pelt had faded into a silver one. He watched as the spring in her step became a hobble, and how their children had children of their own. Silvanus ignored how Devina's eyes, once so full of life, was soon clouded with a silky film. Devina was growing old, their children were growing old, and their children's children, and Silvanus? Well, Silvanus remained young. He ignored how everybody was growing older, until it was impossible. How it pained Silvanus to watch Devina slowly perish, and the sadder he became, the more the forest seemed to droop, until finally, on a dim evening, Devina passed away. As years passed, Silvanus watched his own children follow, then his grandchildren, then his great-grandchildren, until Silvanus could no longer watch. He could no longer observe his decendants die while he remained young. No father should ever outlive his family. So, he left. Left to wander some other forest in some other part of the world, his heart griefed with sadness. The forest never did return to the way it originally looked. While it remains sunny, if one looks closer, there is always a dim light, signifying Silvanus and the sadness of watching his true love and their descendents death.

It is said today that all wolves are descendants of the forest god. As for Valerian Silvanus? He has hardly been seen since.
