Esredes

From the soul to the vision, everything is covered in blood.

Esredes is the second of four characters developed for a roleplaying group Meg and Astrodevil have been working on called Knochen Lust. The setting takes place in a world of humans and dragons, (or dragon-like creatures like wyverns) which are called knochen. Knochen were chosen by the gods to be the race that shaped the world through elemental magic, but humans hunt knochen for their bones, which supply this magic for their own uses. As a result, the knochen population is nearing extinction.

Based off of a dragon I own on Flight Rising like the other first two, this character comes into the world as the military second in command of the knochen faction against humans and their survival, (called the Nochmal faction or just Nochmal) and he fits their views to a t. Filled with malice towards the human race for their actions against his race, Esredes will stop at nothing to 'save' the knochen race by wiping out their biggest enemy.

It's a rarity for me to make a villain, and I haven't given one this much attention since back in the days when Elmir was considered one. Of the villains existing in Knochen Lust already in the group, he's quickly become the one that comes to people's mind first, and is a prominent threat for others to watch out for, all of which makes me quite proud of myself.

Story

Esredes was raised by a tribe of knochen who lived in relative luxury for a knochen tribe in this time period, living in an area safe from human activity and plentiful in resources. The tribe lived on traditional values and a cold strict style of raising the young, and aligned itself with the Nochmal side of the factions, having a mutual distaste for humans. Esrey was raised on stories of the knochen being chosen to be the keepers of the world, and of knochen being hunted by the evil that was the human race. From a young age, he manifested a dream of one day becoming the hero that would save his race from this terrible enemy. He was also an emotional child with a tendency to get into trouble.

This continued into adolescence with Esrey ending up with a reputation for it, but eventually, the adults in the tribe got tired of it and a couple knochen stepped forward and took him under their wings, determined to make him behave and be a functioning member of the tribe like most everyone else. And after some time and effort, it worked, and Esrey finally started taking responsibility for himself and acting like a young adult (Looking back on it now, he's quite embarrassed by his child behavior and would not be able to tolerate himself as a child). Several years later, he bid farewell to his tribe and set off to pursue his lifelong dream of fighting for his faction.

It was at this stage that he finally began to be exposed to the realities of the life path he chose for himself. The initial excitement of going off on the first expedition was replaced by being overwhelmed, the first time he laid waste to a member of his great enemy followed by confusion at the apparent ease of the process, the first injury, and the horror of the first time killing a knochen in self-defense- all were new experiences he quickly adjusted to. His hatred for humans also became set in stone during this time period as he witnessed firsthand the kind of atrocities that he had heard about from his tribe. That was when it first became pleasing to kill them.

Esrey ended up going through the ranks at a steady rate as he continued to fight for his faction. It was during then that he finally made himself admit that he needed to create a human form for himself to make things easier. As every knochen is able to transform into one alternative form with practice and effort due to their extensive control over their body chemistry, taking the form of a human would make it easier to scout out human settlements beforehand and approach a human area more safely, even though Esrey despised the thought of appearing like his enemy. But by telling himself it was for the greater good, he put himself through the rigorous process of trying to master a new form at an age past the prime time to do so. He also picked up swordplay as a secondary weapon to give the form more use.

His life in battle continued on, as he started getting to the point of being able to lead his own expeditions. Eventually, he reached his biggest battle yet when he assisted leading sections of forces in an all-out attack on a human city in an attempt to wipe it out, and though the battle was ultimately lost, he along with many others earned recognition for their efforts in the battle.

Some years after that, he was transferred to a position directly under Aclyone, the leader of the faction, making him a sort of second in command to her. He did not know the leader personally before then, but has adjusted himself well to the position and remains there in present time, carrying out her orders and continuing his lifelong pursuit of slaughtering every last human alive and ensuring the knochen survive.

Personality

"Let me tell you something, I'm doing what's best for our race, for the survival of the knochen. Whenever humans and knochen try to negotiate with each other and find peace, it never lasts long. Humans can't see us as their equal, they will never be able to, they are the vilest of creatures and they all deserve to die!"

If you were to meet him in a normal context, Esredes would likely come off as a serious and unemotional individual, possessing an elegant demeanor with polite and formal language, and radiating off an aura of respect and confidence. However, in any context of hostility, it wouldn't be long before one observes how this dissolves away, revealing an aggressive and brutal nature underneath supported by unwavering hatred and malevolence towards an entire race, as well as lot of anger. Esredes is a driven individual with a cause and a purpose, but also narrow-minded and closed in his ideology, taking it down the wrong path and refusing to see any other possibilities. He believes knochen are a superior race to humans and sees them as a race of dangerous vermin who must be eliminated before they drive knochen extinct. To that note, he will do almost anything to achieve his extremist goal of human eradication for the sake of knochen and the world's survival, whether it be kidnapping, mass murder, or torture.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Esredes, second in command of the human resistance, directly under Aclyone. I have served under her faction for a long time, and fought many battles against humankind and their advancement. It is an honor to make your acquaintance."

Outside of the battlefield and amongst those he holds any sort of regard for, Esrey typically acts with professionalism, being respectful to his higher ups and making it known to those he does not respect his dislike, often appearing cold and distant. He values respect, and loyalty, and will do a lot to achieve respect for himself, as well as being drawn to those that have it. He tends to be quite judgemental of others and often draws his own conclusions about people or situations without properly evaluating them once he has a preconceived notion. Despite his typical seriousness, he's definitely not devoid of amusement. Whether its to be snarky and insulting or to simply respond to something in a certain manner, he can be prone to making remarks of his own and acting more playful, frequently smirking for a few seconds after making an amusing remark only to drop it afterwards. Sometimes this can even sound like flirting, but he’s unaware of this and never means it that way. He often remembers little things people say and reflects them back at the person later, in both insulting and non-insulting manners. Esrey can also be very persuasive due to his way of voicing and backing up his opinions and beliefs with a strong, passionate tone. Though he keeps his composure the majority of the time, the proper emotional pressure that manages to slip beyond his barriers can loosen it, resulting in a variety of often unfavorable reactions for both himself and the recipient. There are also a select few people that he will act more relaxed and direct in the presence of whom he knows on a more personal and intimate level, and he's much more likely to share things about himself or even show off. Otherwise, there's usually an underlying feeling of tension and a certain reservedness to his demeanor, not to mention an uneasy aura.

"Could you imagine having something you fought so hard for be the cause of your demise? I could almost pity him for it."

But Esrey lives his life for the moments on the battlefield, and its often there or in closed spaces that he comes out in fuller force. Esrey enjoys the thrill of battle and has developed a sadistic enjoyment and bloodlust for killing humans, which sometimes hinders his decision making process. Whether he's following orders or giving them out, he usually keeps a cool and calculated head that tries to think objectively, but this is sometimes hindered by his rash side, which can come out when he is either getting too far ahead of himself or going into a panic over a battle not going well, and blinds his focus towards inflicting pain and nothing else, often resulting in him receiving an injury, which ironically also typically brings him out of it. When he's fighting alone without orders to follow or give in his way, he has to rely on himself to keep a cool head, which often works only up to a point. Esrey also finds his fun in confronting faces that have become familiar to him on the battlefield, reoccurring enemies that add an extra element of interest to a battle. It's a pretty common theme for his more playful side to come out in the presence of one, as he may deliberately make remarks to taunt them into coming at him blindly.

"...there's no need for making an unnecessary slaughter."

Despite his violent and harmful nature, Esrey still takes it upon himself to have his own code. He generally tries to avoid killing knochen, and treats battles that end up involving them as a battle to exhaust and incapacitate, though this has to be dropped sometimes when the opposing knochen makes it clear they're fighting to kill. However, he makes an exception for knochen who kill other knochen not out of a battle or defense, but purely for the sake of murder. To him, there's nothing worse, and he would give any knochen like that a slow, painful death. He also draws the line at killing knochen children, but not those of the human variety. Esrey also cares genuinely for those within his faction, and it's their wellbeing that he prioritizes before anyone else's. His faction members being harmed is one of the few things that can create severe emotional pain for him. In his own mind, he's trying to save his world from being destroyed by a harmful force, and can't understand why anyone would want to destroy it entirely or place no value whatsoever in its life.

"Whatever you think you can do, you can't stop me. But I appreciate the challenge."

All in all, however, Esredes is a danger to both humans and knochen alike, no matter what the situation looks like from his own twisted viewpoint, and nothing will be able to convince him otherwise. As long as he is alive and able to continue his campaign of death and destruction, the world will not be safe for either race to inhabit.

"Take care with those wounds. I'll see you later."

Creator's Comments

You would usually see me talking about how much I love the character and what I've done with them in this section, and while it is true that I know he’s a successful character, he has also become the character I act like the biggest tsundere with and make the most jokes about how I hate him and want him to die and someone needs to free me from this hell of having made him. Pretty much, he's become the character I love to hate.

Even with him being an overflowing dumpster of garbage and the aspect of sympathy removed, I at least find fun in writing the character's dialogue, mocking him excessively (still not to the level of Elmir, but we might get there), and living for the moments when he gets what's coming to him. His personality and behavior have also become an intriguing aspect all on their own; while he clearly falls into a certain type of villain, he's also become a weird amalgamation of interaction between his serious and chaotic side, all of which make the character more intriguing and terrifying for me.

It's a new experience for me to write and roleplay a villain of this kind, and have a character that will have so many enemies to face, but ultimately, but it’s been an incredible and successful experience. The response to the character has been insane and elevated him to ultimate Alexa villain status. Not to mention, thanks primarily to my friend Momo’s affection for the character and her love of drawing shitposts and fluff, his gallery is ridiculously big, bigger than it has any right to be. And what can I say, I love every second of this bloody mess.

Trivia Facts:

-According to knochen chat joking around, he would be a bathtub as an object (probably one filled with blood). Thank you knochen chat for determining these important details.

-His primary element is earth, and he is able to manipulate the ground and cause small tremors, with his secondary element being of the mind, giving him the ability to make someone feel disoriented. He uses this ability on others often when in a pinch.

-In addition to his combat knowledge, he has also studied and become quite proficient in combat medicine, to better help himself and others with wounds acquired from combat.

-The basis that the character is taken from comes from character ideas I wrote out for an adventure story involving flight rising; though I had no intention of actually writing one, I still found it fun to jot down character ideas for it. Esrey, in addition to having a different name, would've been a general for the Ice Flight. Ironically, this would've meant he was indirectly serving under Eschiare, who was an ice flight princess. He may have lost the ice association but he's still cold as ice.

-He was also originally a coatl, but now more loosely resembles a ridgeback.

-The original character idea was also meant to be more ambiguously evil, but... oops. Maybe one day in another universe that idea will be explored.

-Despite the value he holds in fighting, he's not one for the 'let the weak die and the strong survive' mentality, as he recognizes that physically weak people often find a way to overcome their weakness (and also, he thinks it's still a bad mindset on its own). He has much more of a dislike for mental weakness as he sees a lot more people give into it.

-He is often drawn with his arms crossed. That kind of body language with him not only signifies annoyance and irritation, but also tends to be a cover up for embarrassment and feeling uncomfortable with a situation.

-The fact that his main outfit resembles a formal military uniform is not because the faction actually has uniforms, but because he chose to model his outfit off of one for intimidation purposes. Its mirroring of his knochen form is deliberate to try and offset the hatred he has for the form. His secondary outfit, on the other hand, is more for blending in amongst a human populace when he uses the form to scout out places, and is meant to attract little attention.

-He often surrounds himself with nature to relax, and has a certain fondness for animals, particularly rabbits.

-His not-so-subtle main motif is blood.

-He is the first character of mine to possess the Lawful Evil alignment.

-The word ezredes is apparently hungarian for colonel. Esrey dislikes this notion as he says he's higher ranking than that.

-In addition, it took me a grand total of five months and eight days after uploading him to toyhouse to realize his name has the word red in it. The name was made up on the spot and changed from the original name given to the dragon on flight rising due to the previous name's similarity to Aclyone.

-It's not uncommon for him to comment on the strangeness of his own name, but despite those comments, he genuinely loves it and wouldn't want it to be anything else.

-When it comes to humans, unsurprisingly, he has a lot of hang ups. He won't touch them unless it's an attack gesture, he definitely won't put any part of them in his mouth, usually not even in combat, and he won't eat anything that they've touched.

-The sword he currently uses was gifted to him by a higher up after he had broken his previous one, who saved it just for him after taking it off a prestigious warrior. He treasures it highly in part because of this and would rather have it recreated than move on to a different model, having come to find it to be his perfect fit.
