At first, Hourglass was somewhat normal, apart from the fact that they escaped from a lab at a young age. They barely remembered their life in the lab, until one day when everything came back to them in a flash. They tried to appeal to the city's government to stage a rescue mission but they were refused. However, Hourglass managed to rescue the other cruxes in the lab by themselves. They soon realized that the problem was with the government, how they had forgotten their original purpose of helping others. Soon, with their small band of escaped cruxes, who took refuge in an underground cavern with a lake, they learned how to bloodbend without the full moon, and began to wreak havoc on everyone who was in a position of power. Kara and some of their friends found out about Hourglass' plan and soon began their quest to defeat Hourglass and their band of cruxes.
