Chanse
Ah, it's you again. Good morning!
You've met this man before. In the very same place... as if he's a regular here.

"I've been going here since I moved to America."

You could tell. How he interacts with the owners as if they were friends. Not to mention, he knows everything in the menu... even the secret ones. Though, it's rather strange for him to talk to someone that remains unfamiliar to him. You don't even know his name.

"Oh, sorry... my name is Chanse."

You haven't spoken a single word and yet this man somehow knows what you're thinking. You could be convinced that he has the ability to read minds.

"I... don't read minds. I can tell from your face. It happens to me and the kids all the time."

He laughs away as he watches you fluster.

I just appreciate a newcomer. Especially when they come back the second time. I adore the taste of their coffee.
The first time you were here, was only because you moved. It's only normal to try to be familiar with the places and it's normal to stop by for a cup of coffee before you start your new day. He was here the first time you came by, early in the morning, settling at the corner seat that was closest to the serving counter - he sat there specifically to talk to the bakery owner every time he was nearby.
The taste of the second cup was splendid as much as the first one. And for sure several others thought the same. You came in just before the queue started to pile up and the only seat that was available to you was Chanse... who was sitting there by his lonesome. As he noticed you approaching him and his seat, the man took a sip of his coffee and gave you a pleasant smile.

"Give it about an hour and they'll all be gone. Then all the tables will be open for you."

You take his word for it, but you decide that you'll amuse yourself with him for a little bit before you'd leave.
Elliot and his uncle are the owners of this place. It's not only the coffee that's good, it's everything they serve.
You glance over the counter and noticed a fast-paced, brown haired youth walking back and forth between the back counter and the display case. You only watched him briefly, as you were distracted by the wafting smell of cookies that had been taken out of the oven. You assume that the older man behind him at the oven would be his uncle. You don't have time to purchase anything else in this bakery/cafe, but for sure next time you'll snag those chocolate chip cookies.

"If you don't know what to get, you can always ask Elliot. He bakes most of the stuff, but he'll suggest the ones he's most proud of. He's not the kind of guy to show off how amazing his dishes are, but he'll shyly suggest the ones he's happiest with."
Me? I'm an elementary teacher, so I need a good cup of coffee to start my day. Fifth-graders are filled with energy, y'know?
You asked him why you'd be at the Bakester so early at this day. Apparently it was normal for Chanse to come here the moment they open. And other days, the owners even let him hang around before they'd officially open up. Perhaps this was perk of being a customer for so long.

Though just from the melancholy look at his face, you'd expect him to be more of a highschool teacher, or even a college professor... or just a plain office worker. Something more mature for his look, perhaps?

You watched his face shift for a moment when he took a big chug of his coffee. Surely you just saw a sad look on his face just now? Maybe you were just seeing things. You were convinced that he had this heart-warming smile this whole time. When you were going to ask if there was something wrong, you heard the thunk of his coffee cup hitting the table and immediately stood up.

"Well, it's time for me to go! I have to be there before the kids start coming in. I'd love to have another talk with you, so... next time?"

He reached out to shake your hand and waved a goodbye. With the chime of the door as he left, you could only wonder that he knew that you noticed something. As curious as you may be, you don't know him well enough to pry though anything so personal. So perhaps you catch him in here for the next few days... you'll find out what's been bothering him.

About

Chanse is a fifth-grade elementary teacher, who is popular with students, teachers, and even parents. Everyone who's met him believes that happiness simply radiates out of him, and almost every day for class is filled with energy. Aside from teaching, he's tasked to overseeing the traffic at the entrance of his school, both before and afterschool, making sure all kids, pedestrians, and even the drivers are coming through safely. He does this for very personal reasons that he cannot explain so freely.

Ransford is close with one of the sixth-grade teachers, who has been his childhood friend back when they were elementary students in Japan. Perhaps his past, he often seeks for Hope for his own comfort - they even lived together when they moved out of Japan to enter University in America. They were inseparable during those years... especially after the passing of his late fiancé. It wasn't until Emery's appearance that he started to feel the distance between him and his best friend - and tries to find other way to settle down the depression.

But sometimes... he feels like there hasn't been anything else to soothe the sadness. Even the glowing happiness and bright smiles of his children... were they enough to ease the pain of missing someone so dearly?

Personality

Chanse is bright, cheery and always optimistic. He's young and has enough energy to catch up with the kids that he adores... and often relies on a few cups of coffee to maintain it. He never tends to fail in showing a bright smile towards everyone and everything before he starts the day. He's a debonair and charming individual, who wouldn't give up in trying to raise one's morals. And does his best to make friends with almost everyone. He is often at the neutral side of certain positions he's in, whether it would be between good or evil or between two of his best friends at an argument. Chanse is the gentleman that does his best to keep things at ease even if it get himself hurt.

There is a rare occasion where Chanse is saddened by the biggest memories in his life - thus starting a short period phase of depression. Ransford becomes sensitive with his own feelings and closes himself from other people, even if it's those who he trusts the most. And if anyone noticed, he will attempt to immediately withdraw from everything, even if it was just a moment, until he believes everything is fine. He keeps his distance, thus becoming antisocial for a short while before he rushes back out with enthusiasm and optimism. He definitely keeps himself distracted by at this time he's usually the most quiet and soft-spoken. His eyes are usually sullen and tired, and he tries his best from speaking about his past and projecting his melancholy attitude towards those who can notice the sudden personality change. This state usually gets him in the mood to songwriting and playing music.

Key Details

It's only been a couple of years since he lost his fiancé. He's met his fiancé during university and she died from a car accident. She was pregnant with their child and since then, he hasn't moved on. It's left him in a very depressive state and it's occurred a couple of times, but he simply withdraws himself and hides it away from others, afraid to bringing others down. He seeks comfort from his best friend, who knows very little about the situation (because Chanse wishes to not discuss it). If Hope is not there, he acts worst, sometimes even attempting suicide by trying to drown himself. Fortunately he has other friends that look over him and their presence has prevented him from dying.

Chanse is the designated driver whenever he's out to hang with someone. Only because of the loss of his fiancé affected him greatly - he gets upset if he's not the one driving.
> Becomes aggressive whenever he's interacting with a bad driver. It's almost as if he's a different person(?).

He's very close to his family. They were the first one to know what happened to his past lover - and all of them moved out of Japan just to be with him. Despite his father is still busy with his detective work, his brothers always tries to find time to spend time with him during the school vacation periods.
> His mother left him and his dad four years after the quadruplets were born. Therefore Chanse had very little time with any activities after school when they lived in Japan. However, with the help of Hope and his father, the Ransford family rarely had any family struggles.
> His little brothers, who're very attached to him since Chanse was just a teenager, are very protective over him.

Chanse likes to speak about how he prefers to drink his coffee out of a mug instead of a paper cup. He has a huge collection of mugs, especially the novelty ones, that he has in a cupboard in his kitchen... and even in a cabinet in his classroom. The kids likes to drink hot chocolate out of them... as long as they wash thoroughly afterwards.
He likes to give them as gifts, and he likes to receive them.

If it isn't his very optimistic attitude whenever there's people around, then it's definitely his coffee addiction. If he isn't stopped by his friends, he probably wouldn't be afraid to drink coffee by the gallon every single day.
Chanse acts the way he is solely because the the amount of energy that the dirty bean water has bestowed him. Without it, he's... somewhat the same. Maybe expect him to have a loss of words because he has a hard time thinking and perhaps a little bit drained. If he doesn't get his drink, he'll prefer to sit in a chair for hours... sleeping the day away until he gets his fix

Happiness.

Everyone is searching
for the missing piece in life.
The key to unlock the door
and steal back all lost time.
Searching, looking, restless,
scanning every crack and crevice,
laying awake at night,
dreamless, empty presence.
Your broken heart
from years and years
lets laughter fall onto
your deaf ears.

No happiness is enough.

No joy can be felt.

I Are you sure about this? Do you want me to be honest with myself? Well if you insist...

Before I was happy. I was always happy. If anything happened that negatively affects my life - I just laugh it off. I smile it away.
But now, I am not so sure. I still do the same thing but never did I ever question if it was ever worth it. This feeling isn't what I've had before. After I lost her, this feeling kept creeping back up. And it's weight gets heavier every time.

I'm starting to grow tired...

CHILDHOOD

"Chanse I want you to listen to me. You probably are smart enough that your mother isn't going to be here anymore. I'm going to do my best for you and your little brothers. But I can't do this all by myself... Will you help me take care of the family?"

- Michael

Because of Chanse's father, Michael's busy schedule - working for the law in Japan, he was often away from homeChanse's mother had very little to no problems about it until she gave birth to quadruplets.

While his father was on the case regarding the accusation of a famous musician and singer, Lusu. He befriended one of the celebrity's sons that went by the name of Hope. Since they've first met, they've attended the same schools together starting from their early elementary years. And Chanse often sought for Hope's support every time things grew tense in Ransford's home and even so when they divorced soon after.

Chanse was only a child when his mother left their home, leaving him and his father almost stuck when taking care of four toddlers. But thankfully, these events occurred after solving Lusu's case - so he and Hope were able to help - leaving Chanse an opportunity to continue school with ease.

TEENAGE LIFE

"I had plenty of opportunities to continue singing. And Viktor seems hellbent into getting me to graduate sooner than most. As much as I want to... I don't want to leave you behind. I don't want to lose you in the process, my friend."

- Hope.

With the help of Hope and his father, he followed his best friend and attended a prestigious academy after elementary. Hope, especially, was a popular figure among campus but he never fails to be by his best friend's side every single day.

But Hope was often sought after inside and outside of the school. He felt worried he was going to be left behind, he worked hard enough in his studies and other school activities to at least be in the same level as him. Popularity was the least of his worries, but he didn't want to depart from Kirisawa just yet.

With the help of Hope's mentor (Viktor), they graduated rather early from the academy and immediately flew over to America to attend University.

ADULTHOOD

"Never! Never in the world I will let you die this way. You don't need to tell me anything. But please don't hide away from me when you're suffering. What kind of friend would I be... if I can't do anything to help you."

- Hope

Despite being in University with the full support of Hope's mysterious patron(s). He wanted to at least earn some of the money for himself during his days living in or near the campus. He took up a part time job for modeling with Baron in order to pay for meals and other luxuries. While working in a couple of photography studios, he met a beautiful woman from Korea and instantly fell in love with her.

Before they were even married, Ransford discovered that she was pregnant with their child. To Chanse, this was a perfect opportunity to propose to her. And for the past year, he's kept it a secret from Hope (who seemed busy on his side of work) until their wedding plans were fully set up.

Yet before those ideas came into play, he fumbles upon the most painstaking news in his life. His fiancé didn't survive a car accident while he flew to Japan for a few days to visit his father. Her passing highly affected Chanse's mental state and he completely withdrew himself from reality. Even at this point, he's never told Hope about the situation - making his best friend rather worried for his wellbeing.

Depression has kicked in for a long while, in which Chanse could not really find any way to fix the solemn feeling. The negative effect that the man was feeling brought him into a stage of exhaustion and unhealthy habits of heavy drinking. One day, Chanse figured he'd try ending himself by throwing himself off of the docks and into the ocean, which was a decent way to commit suicide since he failed to learn how to swim. Although his attempt fail due to Hope's suspicion and he was saved by his dearest friend - which now snapped him out of depression and worked himself out of the negative emotions laid upon him. Give it about another few months, he was acting normal and cheery like he had felt before the tragedy started. And whenever he felt anything similar to sadness, Hope was the first to know - hoping that he'd be by his side when it's necessary.

Chanse follows Hope after the both retired from their musical and modeling career and turned to becoming teachers. The two best friends worked in trying to get their degree and successfully earned their jobs working together as Elementary teachers.

THE STORY NOW

"You're a nice man, Chanse. But... has anyone ever told you that there's something off about you? Especially that smile of yours. Looks like there's something wrong. And don't act surprised either - I can see right through you."

- Elliot

Chanse is settled down comfortably in the home with his best friend. He dedicates most of his time to the children in his school - carefully planning, grading assignments, making different activities. It looked as if the children were his highest priority.

But realistically he works endlessly to make sure all of his students are happy. And to keep the thoughts of the past away from his brain. Especially when he can't constantly rely on Kirisawa nor keep him all to himself all the time. Most especially when he was watching Hope turn his interests to a young woman, he needed other things to keep his mind off any sad emotions dwelling within him.

Through Hope, Chanse was introduced to Emery and her lovely group of friends. Despite being invited to spend time with their group circle, he often distancing himself from them in order to work on his own activities like grading school work or just spend time with his dog. But realistically - they were all excuses to be alone or didn't want his appearance to drag anyone down.

And when he thought he was good at covering up his emotional struggles though his constant laughing and wide smiling - Emery's friend, Elliot, was the very first person to see through his façade. Ransford, was more shocked at the confrontation when they were alone in Baxter's bakery. Chanse was not sure if there was a point that Baxter was trying to get through, but Elliot's caught the teacher's attention for a very long time.

Exchanging a few small conversations with Elliot in his bakery doesn't seem very practical when it came to helping his mental health. But Ransford always felt refreshed to have a conversation where he can feel very honest about himself.

TLDR

  • Chanse was born in Japan - his father was a detective who wasn't home very often and his parents' relationships was very strained because of his absence.
  • After his four little brother was born, his mother left the house after a year, leaving Chanse and his father the only ones to take care of them.
  • His family was greatly supported by a celebrity that his father saved from his previous cases. Befriended his son and attended school together with him.
  • Remained best friends since their elementary years. He graduated with him and moved to America for University. He meets his a pretty lady and proposes to her.
  • His fiance dies from a car accident while he was away in Japan for a temporary time. Chanse's mental health dwindles greatly and likely becomes depressed.
  • Tried to commit suicide but was saved by Hope. Afterwards, he often relies on Hope for any mental support. The two of them become elementary teachers together in the same school.
