Matthias is definitely... odd. It's quite difficult to get a read on him, because a lot of what he displays as his 'personality' is just a front. More often than not, he acts as if he doesn't understand things that people tell him, often to avoid consequences he would have to face, or unneccesary tasks to do. His excuse is, "I don't have a brain, so I wouldn't know" - which, he really doesn't. However, he is most definitely not as stupid as he likes to lead on. In actuality, he is pretty intelligent - he would just much rather play the fool. He is extrodinary at learning new information, and remembering it, too.
He might pretend that he didn't understand something explained to him, or just shrug it off as if it isn't worth it. But, he will remember it, without questions, probably always. He can recall specific things vividly from pretty much his entire 'life'. He doesn't forget. One could call him manipulative for this behavior. However, it's not intentional, it's just how he has always been... Maybe it is because he was told so often that he didn't have a brain, he couldn't think for himself, and would never understand. Or it is a sort of survival mechanism . Who knows.
He is actually pretty light-hearted. He likes to joke around, mess with people, dance and even sing. Thus is the way of the people of Oz, after all - but maybe he doesn't act as seriously as he should at all times. Danger, repurcussions - he just doesn't really pay any mind to that. It's not worth worrying about to him.

- His eyes are buttons. They occasionally fall off.
- His right eye is also ever-so-slightly smaller than the other, but it's not super noticable.
- Speaks with a southern drawl.
- He is self-conscious of his face, wearing a scarf over his 'mouth'.
- Enjoys smoking, only because having a lit cigarette so close to his face is, as he puts it, 'exciting'.
- Has been told by people in Oz that he may have been human in his life before becoming a scarecrow. He thinks this could be true, but has no memory of such a thing.

- Polymath ⤳ Capable of learning things very quickly. He absorbs information like a sponge. Eveen if it seems like he may not be paying attention.
- Excellent memory ⤳ Very good at recalling small details, long lists of information, and memorizing things without much given time, be it visual or otherwise.
- Astute ⤳ Good at reading people and assessing situations.
- Opportunist ⤳ Will take advantage of any doors that open to him.
- Inhuman ⤳ He does not require food, water, breathing or sleeping. Does not feel pain or exhaustion. Resistant to disease and poison.
- Fire ⤳ For... obvious reasons.
- Frail ⤳ Has basically no physical strength. Don't expect him to be doing any heavy lifting because he just... can't. He literally lacks muscles.
- Rickety ⤳ Very unstable on his feet, has a difficult time balancing on occasion. He can be picked up and tossed, knocked over and pulled around by an average person. Tends to fall and trip a lot.
- Frayed ⤳ Comes apart at the seams very easily. His body has been sewn and patched so many times that it it's pretty easy to catch on something and rip a hole. Nowadays, he doesn't even bother to fix his holes unless they are particularly bad.
- Negligent ⤳ Is rather careless in the face of danger. He understands consequences, while acting as if he doesn't - but really, he just doesn't really care about them.
In the land of Oz, there was once a scarecrow. Made by the munchkins, the scarecrow sat in a field, tied to a pole, lifeless. Or so it was thought - for an unknown reason, one day it came alive. It was always tortured by the crows, that were not deterred by it's presence.
One day, a girl came along the road. After realizing the scarecrow's ability to speak, she quickly made to untie it. The scarecrow explained how grateful it was - for it was not smart enough to figure out how to escape, or even scare off the crows that abused it so. For it had no brains...
The girl, Dorothy, asked if it would like to come along on her adventure to go down the yellow brick road to find the Wizard of Oz - maybe the wizard could grant it the brains it needed to think for itself. The scarecrow agreed. But first, Dorothy decided, it needed a name. From that point on, the Scarecrow was Matthias.
And so, the two set off, managing to find two more acquaintances - a heartless Tinman and a cowardly Lion...
Capable of manipulating the dead plant matter [mainly straw] that makes up his body in any way he wants, as well as external sources (hay, dead grass, decayed plants, etc.) if he has access to it.
Let's just say, it's not a good idea to light him on fire.
