Being raised among direspectful and cruel soldiers and surrounded by constant battles and war made Jack extremely withdrawn and lack of caring of himself. He still knows right from wrong and won't hesitate to step in to defend innocent people, and won't necessarily back down when challenged or threatened, as he doesn't care because fighting in Wars took away all fear of being hurt or even killed, but as he cares more about his companions than himself, the fear of dying and leaving them behind keeps him from foolish acts of bravery and confrontation.
