Elohim

A mercenary who primarily is hired to take on the toughest of tasks out in the wilderness of Empyria. Unexpressive, and more than a little frightening with their wings made of cursed flesh, Elohim excells at their work- but their sociability, less so.

To Strangers

Elohim, for lack of a better word, is intimidating: having giant meatwings doesn't help that, and having a stoic disposition and resting tired face doesn't either. A lot of people are generally a little wary of them, especially for being a cursed human. If you actually know what they do, this hardly helps: over the years, Elohim has gained a reputation for being hired for some of the most notorious cases such as runaways with artifacts and coming out of those jobs (relatively) unscathed. Ironically, Elohim actually is very much softhearted behind their steely disposition, and has an especially soft spot for those vulnerable, but combined with their unexpressiveness, it's not easy to show that.

Overall, not the best way to make friends.

To Friends

To the very sparse few that could call Elohim an aquantaince or the even more scarce few who can call them a 'friend', they'll recognize Elohim's rather soft behind the cold exterior. Elohim's still hard to get information out of, but to those they're more close to, they're a little bit more talkative about something other than their work. If you're close enough to call them a friend, you're able to read their emotions- however, those who actually get close enough (physically) to even call them an aquaintance are few and far between the wilds of Empyria.

To Enemies

If you're the target of their mercenary work, you'll know what you're dealing with when you see an entire guy come down from the Sky, seemingly out of nowhere wielding a giant sword. Here, Elohim's steely attitude works perfectly, and many of their enemies avoid them after either learning about them or surviving an experience with them to save their skin. Those who do survive them are often left with literal scars, memories of a sword, and a tall, sword wielding, demon of a mercenary after them.

To Themself

Elohim rarely reveals anything about themself- in part, this is because they really don't like to think too hard about themself (it's hard to not, though, if you're managing your cursed wings pretty much on the daily). In a way, they're rather hard on themself, withholding a lot of their true emotions (or perhaps those feelings were buried long ago), which contributes to their unexpressiveness. That's just how it's always been for them, and that's how it'll continue to be... Unless?

Story

PAST

They don't remember where they were born, really. All Elohim really knows about their origins and their parents is that they were abandoned into the wilderness from a young age, and left alone to survive by themself. They were, fortunately, a cute kid despite the cursed flesh (perhaps in thanks to their face being untouched- a small blessing), and being able to fly around to go from place to place didn't hurt in terms of survivalbility, entirely- at first, it was short distances as they learned to flap, trying to seek out whatever house would let them have a little food. As the few families out in the wilderness were more familiar with cursed children, they'd often be far more sympathetic towards them; in spite of the strange flakes falling from their wings, or their quiet, shy demeanor.

A few even would've taken them in (if they weren't too afraid to stay long enough for their potential homes to realize how much of a burden they would be- and besides, they had managed to survive this long, so travelling more couldn't hurt). They don't begrudge those who did reject them, including their parents, but merely, learned to be more independent so others wouldn't have to take them in, in some noble, self-sacrificing way, or maybe it was to avoid vulnerability. Either way, Elohim learned to sustain themself in spite of the tremendous odds, something they subconsiously attributed to their attitude of self-reliance. Sure, when the monster attacked them and put them onto forced rest for a few days, it wasn't great, but it was fine, being alone.

PRESENT

...It was not fine being alone. As Elohim got older, eventually they made their way into cities, learning how to communicate more, and seeking out simple adventuring jobs (well, as simple as adventuring could be) to pay for various goods to fund their trips (and perhaps, find some friendship). But after a particularily excellent body guard job in which their client was attacked by a notably ferocious monster, surviving due to Elohim's skill and finesse with them coming out only somewhat injured, said client suggested that instead of odds and ends, Elohim set out to be a mercenary instead.

Thus started their career, making a name for themself as 'the ivory demon' among those who they were set out to fight. Slowly but surely, Elohim made their way into more and more dangerous jobs, gaining higher pay and becoming even more adept at their fighting, but perhaps, never getting what they sought in the first place. To this day, they continue to work as a mercenary, continually taking on harder and harder jobs. However, the more reknown they become for their job, the more feared they become, and to them, perhaps, this is how it'll always be (for it's always been like this).

Maybe not, though! Underneath all of their steely exterior lies a huge softie- the kind who sees a small child begging on the streets and without any warning, pays far more coin than anyone else would without a single question. However, their own self-made attitude... Kind of gets in the way.

Design Notes

Physical

  • Elohim is TALL and quite toned (although it's hard to see underneath the plumage...). They linger over most of the population at a height of 205cm/6'7".
  • They've got resting :/ face and are fairly unexpressive by their own means. The lines on their face are partially age lines, partially stress, and partially just being Tired.
  • Their 'fur' is actually very soft and tiny bits of plumage.
  • The 'wings' on their arms flow like large sleeves- they don't function as wings.

Demeanor

  • Elohim stands quite straight and tall, with a steely disposition. Even on a good day, they're fairly unexpressive and hard to read.
  • Continuing the previous bullet, it's pretty hard to tell when they're happy- you can mostly tell from them relaxing more. It's subtle and hard to spot if you aren't looking for it and/or are used to it.
  • Their signing, like their temperament, is stoic- quite purposeful, and leans a little more on the static side.

Style

  • They primarily wear light coloured clothes to reduce the heat from sunlight, especially when in more desert-y areas. Their main outfit is both airy and insulating when it needs to be.
  • If they were to wear formal clothes, they would maybe like something flowy... But that's not gonna happen.

Trivia

  • Compared to their nephfei counterpart, this Elohim is far more quiet, tired, and cynical. Without the support group they have, as a result, Elohim is far more reserved as a result.
  • Their wings heal surprisingly fast- a lot of their foes aim for the eyes on the wings or the wings themselves as they're huge targets, only to find out that said wings heal quite quickly and reflect damage well.
  • ...On the contrast, their wings take extensive time to maintain, especially if they're rusted. When rusted, moving in general hurts (as their cursed flesh extends down their back), so a lot of their time inbetween work is spent working on their wings.
  • ...In addition to how much maintainance the wings are, they have to eat a high iron diet to avoid anemia- their wings' shedding releases a ton of their body's iron on the daily.
