Drake

Drake is a skittish, but strong young man who has a lot of anxiety about himself and his place in the world. His loyalty is hard earned, but once you have it- you can rely on him for anything. He's slow to trust and slower to let other people in, and tends to be secretive and isolate himself whenever possible. You'll never catch him purposely trying to get attention from others. 

A black mage from a prestigious line of unauthorized sorcerers known in infamy for aggressively opposing the mages school of Ipus and its decisive monopoly on "acceptable" magic. Growing up he was raised with all the secretive and dangerous spells and tricks of his family line and what they learned of their own accord outside of the rigorous schooling of the official circle of mages. Explosive, unreliable, and unpredictable tragedy have always left a heavy shadow on his life. Those most dear to him play with their very lives every time they feel the petty need to prove their superiority, and the weight of their expectations that he do the same is a heavy burden on him. He struggles with an enormous amount of guilt and self doubt in the fact that he doesn't really find his family's animosity justified and even if their intentions had originally been earnest, they've far too deeply been marred by personal grievances. 

He struggles to come to terms with the concept of their being incorrect because of the fact that he's been constantly emotionally manipulated into seeing their cause as the only just cause, and been mentally skewed into believing that its somehow his duty to continue the downward spiral of his family as they search desperately to invalidate their predisposed enemy without regarding the consequences of their actions on either side. 

Being naturally disposed to curiosity, he struggles to fit in with his family simply because he doesn't see things as black and white as they do. he doesn't like to view anything as purely evil or wrong, and has a great sense of empathy beyond what most of his family has left after generations of a long and deep vendetta. If you asked him, he'd attribute this to his father, a kind but strong man who left-never to be seen again- when he was still very young. This is something his family also mirrors, calling him the family "stray", and noting often that he takes after his father, and not his rather ruthless mother. His family does care for him to some degree, but in one like his where lives tend to be rather fleetingly toyed with, most have already learned well the mistake that comes with getting too close to people. As a result, he finds their relationships very shallow. But with no one else to turn to he is forced to confide in them when he simply can't stand the thought of being alone. He likens this often to each of them being trapped on their own islands, close enough to see, but not close enough to swim.

He is competent in swordplay, and has learned to use his tail as a weapon. He works as a city guard, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Luckily, he doesn't really look like his family (Taking after his father), and it helps him to blend in. He tells his family this is for extra money for himself, though really he just uses it to get away from them. He can use magic (using a safe spell he knows of course) to hide his dragon-like features, and does so when maneuvering around the city. If caught using illegal magic he'd be in hot water, and as such has become more than capable of taking care of himself without it. Unlike some of his family, who are deeply reliant on their connections to the arcane world. 

He comes across as put offish and cold, but really he's just shy and doesn't really know how to open up. He never really had the chance to learn. He secludes himself intentionally for fear of being cast out from the only people he has.

He dreams of a place far away, a tiny home to himself to just do things on his own. To never use magic again unless he really wanted to, and to put the fights of a past he has no loyalty to behind him.

He has a curse placed on him that he's had since youth, occasionally earning random wounds/injuries that seem to magically happen, and occasionally magically heal themselves. He's always viewed it as an adverse effect of some spell gone wrong or demon's deal done incorrectly, and has no idea it's really a result of an illegal magical bonding between himself and Ash, A student at the very mages school his family so deeply loathes.
