The seventh of twelve children, Adelland caused her parents a lot of stress as a child with medical issues they were too poor to treat. She always had the feeling that her parents only saw her as a burden as she was growing up, that they didn’t really want her or pay attention to her — they just had too many mouths to feed. She left home early, and fell in love with a man who would become her mentor. She helped him commit criminal acts and supported him unconditionally, and Adelland genuinely thought he loved her back; she got a thrill out of believing that he needed her and truly accepted her for who she was. Eventually she realised that he enjoyed committing crimes more than he cared for her, and she called the police that evening. She told him the truth, trying to convince him that she would support him with her love, that she would stay with him through everything —

In the Victorian language of flowers, (thornless) red roses symbolise beauty, love, and ingratitude. Adelland's power is to look into a person's eyes and intimately know the people they love, or have loved, as though she'd lived a lifetime with them, or as though she'd loved them herself. The stronger the attraction, the more she knows. It doesn't have to be requited — in fact, Adelland has a penchant for one-sided loves, finding them endearing (or tragic: perhaps she sees no difference). She keeps a list of habits in a notebook, collected from passerby; she takes two spoonfuls of sugar with her coffee. they don't drink because their grandmother hated it when they came home drunk. he carries his old dog's collar with him in his jacket pocket.
