If spoken or written words could adequately express the way Erix feels about Gail, it would take an entire millennium to record. While it was true that they shared roughly that amount of time, they were rarely without better things to do together.
No less a prize than all that is, was, or ever shall be could have pulled him from her side. How cruel then was fate that as it transpired, that was exactly the prize that presented itself to him?
When they were together, they were like two mirrors, endlessly reflecting one another. Their mirths, melancholies, and excesses were amplified not just twofold, but as far as the eye can see. This wasn't always a benefit, but when it was, it was more spectacular than lesser beings can easily imagine.
Without her, Erix was more focused; a singular entity whose hard-edged reality could not be gainsaid. This was necessary when he undertook to usurp omnipotence from those he felt undeserving of the mantle, but now he misses the pleasant way only Gail could help him diffuse his energy and attention. He still has fun of course but doesn't deceive himself that it hasn't lost a great deal of its savor without Gail.
He misses her, and though he's unlikely to admit it in any but his most private moments, still loves her deep down, but she stood between him and his designs. He is not the sort to forgive easily. He wonders if she misses him. He thinks she must, but knows that he abandoned her, and that she is even less forgiving than he. Still, forgiveness might be possible in time. It's not as if they're running out of that anytime soon.
