Following a dreamless sleep, Peter sprouts Mother Deer's horns and is forced to take her place as the protector of deer in the woods. He struggles daily through the seasons, meeting others who've fallen under similar fates. Peter faces peril from weather, wild animals, humans, and within himself as he fights guilt and sorrow. Despite this, Peter manages to find beauty, love, and meaning in his life as Mother Deer.
