Realistic Feline Genetics: In-Depth

Posted 4 years, 8 months ago by Simonpet

Agouti

Agouti: Agouti determine whether or not the following genes show up. This can also be called the "tabby gene." Tabby markings will be the base color and the main color will be a lighter version. For example, a black cat often lightens to brown or gray when a tabby.

Normal Bengal: A Bengal will have rosettes.

Charcoal Bengal: A charcoal Bengal is darker and grayer, with a "zorro" mask and cape (a wide dark dorsal region).

Ticked tabby: A ticked tabby will have the typical mackerel tabby face/leg/tail stripes but will have a salt-and-pepper pattern along the body.

Maximum spotted tabby: A maximum spotted tabby will have a larger amount of the mackerel/classic tabby pattern be broken up. Also called a spotted tabby.

Minimum spotted tabby: A maximum spotted tabby will have a smaller amount of the mackerel/classic tabby pattern be broken up. Also called a broken mackerel/classic tabby.

Mackerel tabby: A mackerel tabby is the typical "tiger" pattern.

Classic tabby: A classic tabby has a blotched or marbled pattern. Also called a "blotched tabby."

Marbled/Clouded tabby: A marbled tabby has elongated blotches.

Albino

Sepia colorpoint: A sepia point has the least contrast between the extremities and body.

Mink colorpoint: A mink point has some contrast between the extremities and body.

Siamese colorpoint: A Siamese point has the most contrast between the extremities and body.

Blue-eyed albino: A blue-eyed albino produces no pigment in their body. They will appear white with blue eyes.

Red-eyed albino: A red-eyed albino produces no pigment. They will appear white with reddish eyes.

Base colors

Black: A black cat with a black nose.

Chocolate: A chocolate (brown) cat with a chocolate nose.

Cinnamon: A cinnamon (warm brown) cat with a pinkish nose.

Red: A red (red, ginger, yellow) cat with a brick-red nose. Males can either be red or not-red. Females can be red, tortoiseshell, or not-red. Due to various interactions with the agouti gene, red cats cannot be solid (not-tabby).

Tortoiseshell: A tortoiseshell (red and black/chocolate/cinnamon) cat with a nose the not-red color.

Color inhibitors

Silver/Smoke: Silver cats are always tabbies and have a white base coat with base color tabby markings. Smoke cats are always solid (not-tabby) and have a silver shading starting from the top of their coat.

Maximum rufousing: Maximum rufousing will cause a highly contrasted coat. For example, a black-based tabby may appear brown.

Minimum rufousing: Minimum rufousing will cause a less contrasted coat. For example, a black-based tabby may appear almost black or gray.

Maximum wideband: Maximum wideband will cause a highly reddened coat. For example, a black-based tabby may appear golden-brown.

Minimum wideband: Minimum wideband will cause a less reddened coat. For example, a black-based tabby may appear almost black or gray.

Dilution and caramelization

Dilution: Dilution causes a cat's base color to lighten. For example, a black cat will become blue (gray). See Sparrow's charts and visualizers for more detail.

Caramelization: Caramelization causes a cat's diluted color to "brown." For example, a blue cat will become blue caramel. See Sparrow's charts and visualizers for more detail.

Ear mutations

Curled ears: Curled ears curl towards the back of the head. It develops with age.

Folded ears: Folded ears fold towards the front of the head. It is linked to disabling skeletal problems, especially in cats with two dominant copies.

Extension

Amber: Amber causes black/chocolate/cinnamon pigment to become a reddish color as a kitten ages.

Eye mutations

Ojos Azules: Ojos Azules gives a cat blue eyes and white-splashed extremities.

Fur length and type

Shorthair: Shorthaired cats can have short or medium-length fur.

Longhair: Longhaired cats can have long or medium-length fur.

Hairless: Hairless cats have no fur.

Selkirk Rex: Selkirk Rexing gives a cat curly fur.

Devon Rex: Devon Rexing gives a cat wavy fur.

Wirehair: Wirehair gives a cat bristly/wiry fur.

Glitter and mica

Glitter: xxx

Mica glitter: xxx

Limb and paw mutations

Munchkin: Munchkin causes all of the limbs to shorten. When homozygous, this is fatal to the embryo.

Polydactyl: Polydactyl causes extra toes on each paw. The number varies between cats.

Split foot: Split foot causes lobster-like paws that can hinder the movement of cats.

Tail mutations

Japanese bobtail: A Japanese bobtail has a short, curled tail.

Kurilian bobtail: A Kurilian bobtail has an abnormally short tail that may be slightly curled in its homozygous form.

Manx: Manx causes a cat's tail to be missing. When homozygous, this is fatal to the embryo.

White

White dominance: A cat's coat will be white, covering all other colors and markings.

50% or greater white spotting: A cat will have 50% or greater white splashing, starting from the bottom. Common markings include bicolor, van, and harlequin.

50% or less white spotting: A cat will have 50% or less white splashing, starting from the bottom. Common markings include locket, socks, and tuxedo.

White gloving: White gloving gives a cat blue eyes and socks markings.

Mittening: xxx

Notes

Color and pattern dominance:

Ticked tabby > spotted tabby > mackerel tabby > classic tabby

Red > black > chocolate > cinnamon

White dominant > white spotting > no white

Notes

Agouti

A sable dog has one of three patterns: clear, tipped, or shaded sable. Clear sables are completely red with a few black hairs. Tipped sables are red with black hairs on the ears, head, back, and tail. Shaded sables are red with black markings similar to tipped sables only darker and more distinct. All shaded sables have a "widow's peak" on the forehead where the brown or black forms a point.

An agouti dog is red but produces banded (alternating red and black) hairs on its upper parts, which includes the ears, head, back, top of legs, and tail. They may lighten significantly as they age.

A tan pointed dog is black with red markings above the eyes, the sides of the muzzle, on the cheeks, the front of the neck and two triangular patches on the front of the chest, and a patch underneath the tail. Some dogs may have the creeping tan/saddle pattern modifier. This modifier causes red hairs to replace black hairs over time until the black is more restricted, sometimes in a "saddle" on the back.

A recessive black dog looks identical to dominant black.

Liver and dilution

A black dog has brown eyes and a black nose.

A liver dog has amber or copper eyes, and a liver or pink nose.

A blue dog has amber eyes and a blue nose.

An isabella dog is caused by having the bbdd genotype. It has amber or copper eyes, and a liver, isabella or pink nose.

Extension

A masked dog can have as little as just the end of the muzzle to the head, ears, chest, toes, and tail-tip being covered in black hairs. Some dogs may have large amounts of shading on the chest and legs, known as extreme masking. This pattern can sometimes obscure red markings.

A grizzle/domino dog looks similar to a shaded sable or creeping tan and can only be found on atat dogs.

Spaniel sable dogs can only be found on KK or Kk / atat dogs but otherwise look identical to sable or tan pointed dogs.

Dogs with no extension have no extension-related markings.

A recessive red dog will be solid red with black nose pigment.

Graying

A graying dog will have its black hairs lighten over time until it looks more dilute. Only long, curly, and wire-hair dogs will express this gene.

Black

A dominant black dog has no red/tan.

A brindle dog has both dominant black and red/tan markings.

A recessive non-black dog only shows what is on the A locus.

Merle

A merle dog (Mm) will have random patches of its black hair diluted to a lighter color. A double-merle (MM) will have random patches of its black hair diluted to a lighter color along with large patches of white. They may be deaf and/or have eye abnormalities. Merles will often have blue eyes and pink noses. Cryptic merles will have the merle hidden because of clear sable, recessive red or white patching.

Harlequin turns dark portions of the coat partially white, which means that black/liver and red hairs will become patched with white. This means diluted portions of the coat will not be shown unless the dog is dd as well. Dogs homozygous for harlequin will be reabsorbed into the womb.

Tweed turns diluted portions (gray or isabella) of the coat into a variety of brown, gray, and tab shades. The pattern is reminiscent of an African Wild Dog.

White spotting

Piebald is an incomplete dominant gene which means that Ssp dogs will have some white spotting but not to the same degree as spsp dogs. The white spread generally begins on the farthest "edges" including the muzzle tip, breastbone tip, paws, and tailtip. Generally, the head, parts of the body, and base of the tail will remain colored while the ears will always remain colored unless the dog has a very high amount of white ("extreme white"). Extreme white dogs may be deaf and have an increased risk of skin cancer. Some dogs will have residual white, which has no genetic basis and can sometimes be mistaken for a Ssp dog.

An irish spotted dog has white on the muzzle, neck, chest, legs, and tailtip. Combining the si and sp genes causes a dog with extended irish spotting.

Ticking is an incomplete dominant gene that causes flecks or spots of color on white areas and is heaviest on the legs and muzzle. Homozygous dogs will have more distinct and rounded spots while heterozygous will have uneven spots. Roan is an incomplete dominant causes heavily-mottled white areas across the whole body, giving a salt-and-pepper appearance. Clear white is the absence of ticking and roan.

Albino

An albino dog will retain some pigment, giving a ghost-like appearance similar to cremello in horses.

Other (brindle)

A brindle dog with the sable gene will be solid brindle.

A brindle dog with the tan pointing gene will be black-based with brindle points.

A brindle dog with the agouti gene may have brindle points or not appear to have brindle.

A brindle dog with the recessive black gene will be solid black-based.

Other (intensity)

A new locus for pheomelanin dilution, or red dilution, has been proposed. This locus is suggested to be responsible for making red markings more intense (more red) and less intense (more white).

Other (countershading)

Countershading appears to turn tan points white, which suggests the responsible locus must be connected to the I or Z series. Another explanation is that it acts on dogs like the albinism (Siamese) locus does on cats, restricting pigment to the warmest (upper) parts of the dog, leaving the limbs, underparts, and other extremeties white. This is likely connected to the markings of Shiba Inus and Huskies due to their consistent patterning.
