One, after another, after another and another—it was easy to lose count. The battles, the tears, the dying breaths and blaster burns and shrapnel scars. He’d counted every day. He wished he’d lost count a long time ago.
One step, two, red and orange lightsaber blades clashing, snow crunching, Talos’ feet slipping on an ice patch as he dived for cover from the Padawan’s weapon. Then, as quickly as it started, all movement stopped. All heads snapped toward the entrance to the frozen temple to a rumbling yowl from within.
“Our injuries were minor and those civilians are safe,” Synnda finally offered after his long stretch of silence. “We’ve dealt with far worse.”
A second, smaller rock followed. When he tried to catch it, he succeeded only in smacking it toward Teeseven as the astromech left the ship, who proceeded to chitter with laughter. “Doc = missed. T7 = could catch that,” the droid teased.
“—need us, just say the word.” A voice to her left, male. As he tucked his holocommunicator away, she caught a glimpse of scarred knuckles. He was large, more than twice her size, his eyes cold, but when he laughed at something a man on his other side said, their iced edges softened.
