Memento Maurees

(Here's some lore if you wanna read up)

Everyone on the Archipelago is aware that the death of a living being attracts darkly-colored creatures (Grimms) or humanoids (Reapers) with glowing eyes. Such visitors are understood to be dreadful signs of an upcoming tragedy, or a confirmation of an already happened one. Not much is known about them for sure, since they're shapeshifters, and are impossible to kill or contain with human means.

Certain signs that this animal or person is actually a Death:

  • older ones find a way to tone down their glowing eyes, but even then it can be remarkable
  • don't age physically, but smarter ones fake aging to stay unnoticed
  • can't eat a lot, or they'll unnaturally bloat
  • go to sleep abruptly, almost like they stop functioning
  • when in water, will rapidly sink unless they shapeshift
  • when cut, don't bleed

How to act when faced with a Death:

  1. If it's quietly following or observing you, stay calm. It might simply be curious. The Deaths seem to learn from mimicking.
  2. If it goes from a passive observation to an active interaction, try talking to it. Even if it's a feral Grimm; some of them are intelligent enough. They say a Death who's treated with respect can benevolently save a life or share its wisdom.
  3. If it seems aggressive, you might be in big trouble. The best survival strategy is to split it into as many pieces as possible, which wouldn't "kill" it, but definitely disorient and discourage enough to give you a chance of escape. Explosives work best.
