Additional note: sorry if i get anything factual(?) wrong,, i tried doing research on gang stuff (also binge-watching a lot of kkangpae/jopok movies lol....o<-<) but i still don't feel like i have a good grasp on it;; however, i thought it'd be more interesting and freeing for me to just let my hand guide me and not get too fixated on getting all the details right atm... so most of the elements are gonna be exaggerated?? and probably made up for the sake of making an interesting (i hope) story :,) (so yeah... tl;dr don't take any of this too seriously LOL and i hope you enjoy!)

in this universe, a small part of the human population can naturally form a tattoo on their body.

overview

tattoos appear on an individual after a significant event (could be positive or negative experiences) or accumulation of multiple events. the stronger the experience is (whether it evokes a strong emotional response or makes a lasting physical impact), the a higher chance that a tattoo will form on the person. because of this, people with larger tattoos are often the ones with a large noticeable injuries, traumatic past and/or have a job that requires them to risk their lives/health. other times, although much rarer, the person with a tattoo may have had more positive experiences such as winning a lottery/become wealthy, or even something as relatively mundane as love at first sight can trigger the tattoo to form.

those tattoos can (but not necessarily always) reflect the person's personality, their experience(s) or possibly even their fate, which can be theorized by reading into the symbolism of the tattoo. tattoos on a person can also reflect their parent's tattoo as well (if they also have one), and can sometimes feature the same object/animal as their parent.

abilities

there is an urban myth many people believe that people with naturally formed tattoos can obtain special abilities, usually "minor" powers such as: enhanced senses, enhanced abilities, increased luck, prediction. they aren't large, flashy powers.

society

there are definitely large notable crime organisations that are centered around gathering people with natural tattoos. because of this, there is unfortunately still prejudice against tattoos in this universe as well. so people who really do not wish to have the naturally formed tattoo can get it surgically removed, but it is rather expensive and there's are pretty big risk of doing lasting damage to the body and also you lose your special ability as well. because of this, people living in areas where tattoos aren't as socially accepted usually just hide their natural tattoos.

"fake" tattoos

any tattoos that aren't naturally formed are referred to as "fake" tattoos, especially in gangs... but there's definitely still people who get tattoos for aesthetic reasons.
