valley of kings
at the base of a tall mountain lies a sparse yet nearly impassable forest of acacias and thorny underbrush, a place predators avoid and prey tries to hide in. even in dry season, the colors here seem bright and almost inviting, if only there was a way into the trees. birds twitter nearby, and the rolling hills beyond the trees give way to the rest of the savanna beyond.
silently, a lion slips into the forest through a small pass hidden in the bushes. pushing through the thorns, they arrive at an unseen clearing enveloped by the sprawling branches of the acacias, with a ground-water fed watering hole in the center. along the furthest edge from the entrance, a series of caves and cliffhangs jut from the mountain base, where the lion takes shelter with another.
when the sun falls and the stars fill the sky, the constellations are clearly reflected in the pool, with leo at its center. this is the home of starpond pride.

the importance of starpond
there are many important beliefs that the pride holds dear, but no object is more important to them than the starpond at the center of their territory. starpond is believed to be a direct connection to the stars. starpond pride believes that upon death, they will be lifted to take their place besides leo and the other constellations in the sky, becoming valued members of leo's pride. the starpond allows them to commune with this great spirit of theirs, and to feel closer to their ancestors and their inevitable future. further, starpond is the lifegiving source of water that keeps the pride healthy and happy, and is as sacred to the pride as it is an important aspect of daily life.
the name for the pride comes from this watering hole, and its name came to vega some time ago in a dream. it is believed that the future leaders of starpond pride will share this dream, and that the next king is that who receives divine information from leo themselves. according to vega, her dream consisted of the great starry lion telling her to leave her pride and seek a new home. during a nearly insurmountable journey, faced with the thorns of betrayal and hardship, she would find a sacred place to commune further with leo, guaranteeing her future pride a place in the stars. after explaining this to vega, leo told her to "go, and seek out the starpond." this is where the name comes from.
leo's pride
a core belief for members of the starpond pride is that one day they will join leo's pride in the sky. leo, represented by the constellation, is considered the great star lion, the first king of any pride who not only lifted lions from the ground to become apex predators, but also lifted themselves into the sky to become the star king. every constellation and star is believed to be a member of leo's pride, and the larger and brighter the star, the more important that lion is to leo's pride. every member of starpond pride seeks to become a bright star, and believes that their closeness to the starpond will allow them to commune with the star king and do his bidding to earn their place.
leo is as close to a god as starpond pride gets, although they believe that the star king was once a regular lion like themselves. leo alone rules over the heavens, and in a sense the lions are monotheistic. the tales they tell of brave warriors and hunters are typically legends based on the largest stars and constellations, and there are many heroic figures in the starpond's belief system.
named for the stars
an important tradition within the starpond pride is their naming scheme; new lions are encouraged to discover their star name through dreams and other ritualistic experiences, while cubs' names are chosen by their mothers. all of these lions have names based on the many bodies in the galaxy. while many are named for stars or comets, there are also some named for galaxies and planets. it's all dependent on what leo tells them their star name is to be. lions who joined the pride without being born their have both their old name and their star name, but most prefer to go by their star names.

the main cave is where vega and her harem resides, nestled securely into the foothills at the edge of the mountains. private meetings also take place here, such as those involving military campaigns or threats to the pride. vega also likes to host private parties with certain members of the pride, although this is rarely discussed. besides vega's cave, matrons and their cubs reside in this place as well, as it is the most secure location for keeping them safe.
the warriors dens are poorly named, as all members of the pride who aren't elderly or nursing cubs live in this place. there are numerous caves and overhangs set into the rocks here, with ample space for the pride to make their home. its close access to the starpond also means that there is plenty of water, and a central spot in the area acts as a storage space for food.
when lions grow too old to participate in hunts and battles with the rest of the pride, they are given a place at elder's grove. grass and dirt cover the rocks here, and the cushioned floor makes a nicer resting place for the older lions and their aging joints. there is ample shade and younger members of the pride provide fresh food every day. the lower a cave sits in this area, the higher a rank the lion who uses it has, as the best bedding is closest to the ground.
cubs are raised and trained in this location. while they live with their mothers in the main cave, they come here to be taught by the rest of the pride how to fulfill certain duties within starpond. the trees provide shade, while the hill still encourages cubs to get a workout as they train. play is also encouraged here, and many cubs spend ample time romping and rolling among the brush.
starpond pride often finds strange artifacts and other items that they save here, in the hoard space. the position of the rocks provide a spacious hiding place for keeping these items safe, so they can be studied further or utilized in rituals.
when all of the lions are called together for a meeting, they head to this open location alongside starpond where there is ample room for everyone. a hill's edge in this location provides a spot for vega or whoever else is speaking to be heard centrally, while the rest of the pride can sit below.
for the lions of this pride, the starpond is a sacred and lifegiving source of water. their theology is based around this groundwater-fed watering hole, which keeps water for long into the dry season and beyond. at night, especially when it is quiet and cloudless, the stars are perfectly reflected in the clear waters, giving this location its name.
orange river
the orange river flows not far from the starpond pride's location, and its waters are teeming with fish. it's a popular location for the lions and other animals alike due to the lack of crocodiles and the relative safety of the bank. the most dangerous creatures here are the humans, who mostly just paddle along the river in small boats during the spring months. the orange river winds its way past the starpond territory, and even in dry season manages to provide life giving water to prey animals, which greatly benefits the pride.
the great savanna
beyond the forest that the starpond pride calls home is an enormous expanse of grassland which stretches for miles, sparsely decorated with acacias and bushes in random spots throughout the plains. this is the great savanna, and it seems to go on forever. many prey animals make their home in this location, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and antelope. the occasional elephant herd or giraffe family also make appearances throughout the area. the great savanna is where the starpond pride does most of their hunting.
skypeak mountains
the starpond pride's home is situated against a mountain range they refer to as the skypeak mountains, which stretch on along the orange river and far beyond the reaches of their territory. the rocky sides of the mountain are treacherous, and few travel the mountain. on one of the higher peaks, it is said that one can communicate directly with leo, rather than through dreams and symbols, but almost none make the trek out of fear of the danger. there is a hyena pack that makes its home near the beginning of the trail to that peak, which also complicates the pilgrimage.
