hmm i do different things! most often i just paint right onto the sketch (usually a very undetailed sketch. i usually sketch with a color too and that merges in). or make a layer above it and block the colors there, and then detail it. i don't really think of it as shading (i forget about light sources a lot..). i change colors often and use color picker a lot to get blended colors.. places near the lines (if it had lineart) are usually darker.. using a similar or opposite color for the shading helps too, instead of black. i don't think i'm explaining this well lol

it doesn't take long once you're used to it. though trying out how other people do it might work out better too! opposite like complementary, like purple and yellow. it just depends on how you want it to look though. different settings and stuff have different colors
