My Skeb experience...

Posted 2 years, 9 months ago by Wafanic

Just wanna share my thoughts regarding the platform.

Firstly, I want to say thank you to mise/crimsonalloy whom had given me courage to use the platform by sharing her experience.

Ever since I met her, I've requested a few times and had always gotten outstanding artwork from the site. But I can't hide my disappointment when I saw the latest delivered result of my Skeb. One of the few reason is not only that it was rushed (I requested since April and just saw that the artist could barely made it to the deadline). The deadline was 12th June, and I saw the artist posted the preview of the sketch only on the 9th of June. It was immediately delivered the next day. And the next point being the outfit is too OOC for Yukiya, which is the very important problem at hand. I have no problems with the overall artwork, it's great. Even with the messy lines and some spots that its forgot to be colored. But I honestly couldn't ever imagine Yukiya wearing that kind of outfit. It made me think that the artist even rushed when reading my request. Or didn't read it at all.

Yukiya is an 18-year-old Rapper. Please NEVER draw him using a sexy outfit and make him look like a stripper. The same thing also applies for Chris.

I am currently editing Yukiya's outfit with a help of a friend, before uploading it to TH. In order for artists in order to not repeat the same mistake. So I beg of everyone, if you ever stumbled and saw the original artwork, please don't ever look at it. I'm so ashamed of it.

Oh goodness, I'm sorry this happened to you. In addition to being OOC, getting sexualized art of your character when you didn't ask for it is nightmarish.

In my head I always know you can be burned by Skeb but in my heart I sincerely hope it doesn't happen to anyone I know... >< In all likelihood, the artist did rush it and didn't read the details of your request, maybe they just looked at the visual reference and did whatever. I hope nobody ever does this again...!

Sorry for the late reply, mise!

Ngl it does make me uncomfortable, but will this incident make me stop using Skeb? Of course not.

You've been really helpful to me too with my Skeb questions, mise. So at least I'm really thankful for that ;;v;;

But of course I wouldn't want to commission that artist again. Because not only I've specified and give the visual references of his existing outfits, the result is still one huge fashion bomb orz.

Like it works if it's in bits of pieces of clothing, but all of it? It's just too much that it does not work.

I'm praying it won't happen to any of us in the future. But I think I've seen something like not matching your request happened to you twice, I believe? If you're comfortable on sharing your experience, would you like to talk about that? :o

No worries! I'm very glad to be of assistance to you, and I hope you only get good results from Skeb from here on out! ><;;

Yeah, there's sometimes some errors and wonkiness in skeb art that you can fix in 5min in photoshop, but sometimes so much is wrong that it makes me feel like, "is it worth it to change?" and it  feels like you wasted your money, orz... but hopefully you and your friend can do some edits like you mentioned!

I have no problem sharing my experiences! In 2 similar cases, they were both artists who were inexperienced with skeb (one had 0 works and the other only had 1 other work), and skeb was gaining in popularity but it wasn't as huge as it is now. I used to only put my character reference in the "reference URL" field instead of just in the request body itself, and all that does is add on the URL to the end of your request.

So I had my desired pose/bg/etc + the character reference in that order. In both cases, the artist would draw the exact correct pose/bg, but with like... some random character and not the OC I linked. I did DM them about this because I cared less about the rules then, and in both cases they were like "oh whoops I did not look at the link that you posted." I was like ??????????

In one case, the artist did redraw the character to be my OC and the other one just ghosted me after they said they would redraw it DX

Since then, I always make sure to post the character reference near the top of the text body and make sure to clearly say that I want the artist to draw the linked character and not some random one LOL.

And there's also some cases where I've had the delivered art I got be nowhere near as good as the artist's other skeb works  and it makes me feel like they didn't like my character and rushed the request. To be honest, I would prefer they just rejected the request if they didn't feel good about the character :') but that's just commissioning for you, sometimes you get great ones and sometimes you get meh ones. (this got long orz)

I'm so sorry that happened to you, honestly hhhhhhhh

I'd hate to be left and ghosted like that-And when our request gets accepted only to made it as a rushed order. With skeb, it really is a hit-and-miss sometime huh-(Or a grab bag as you called it). Tbh I'm naive because I was thinking with Japanese people, since their work ethic is high, I thought that they would take orders seriously (especially if they're freelance and not animators/mangaka who gets tighter deadlines). So I was like "hhhhhhhhhh" when I heard your experience and when the same thing happened to me orz

I guess it all depends on someone's work ethic and personality.

But I'm happy for you that it hasn't happened ever since then!

Also haha it's okay even if it gets long! it just means I got a genuine response from you and that makes me happy! Thanks for sharing with me, mise!!

oh no im so sorry that happened :( i’m frustrated *for* you!! yeah... skeb is great and convenient, but sometimes the lack of any communication can lead to a finished commission that you’re not happy with :( i’m super sorry ;u;

edit: also it’s very strange that they even drew yukiya in a new outfit entirely?? and it’s nothing like his other outfits?? 😭that’s like drawing my oc syplis in a tank top and shorts, it’d be so out of character 😭

Sorry for the late reply, peppy! I've been gathering my thoughts for the last few days.

Yeah it was really weird, I thought those kind of skimpy/revealing clothes are not fit for his character, and I didn't attach any references with such clothes;;

I think they even only read a few of my description and decided to just roll with it. Tbh that outfit is more fitting for K-pop idols on their 20s, unlike Yukiya who just likes edgy outfits www

ALSO I GET WHAT YOU MEAN!! AAAAA I can't imagine Syplis to wear such clothes either even if I think of other alternate outfits for him;;

no worries!! again i'm so sorry for this really bad experience :( it sucks to receive something you paid for, and were excited for, only to feel completely let down by it ;w; i've definitely had that experience sometimes with skeb as well ;;___;; i hope you can get many more wonderful commissions of the two of them in the future, that are much more accurate to their character!! <3

That's so sweet of you, peppy!! 😭😭💖💖💖💖

The same thing goes for you as well! May Sylphis (and your other childrens, of course!) have wonderful Skeb results in the future! 💖
