New faction, new character types, total site revamp, and more!

Happy anniversary! We are so glad for everyone who spent a whole wonderful year with Anathema! As we celebrate our game's first birthday, we look forward to introducing new features, improved resources, and lots more to enjoy in Anathema's future! Thanks for playing with us. Let's make this year even better!

🔹🔸 Event Dates: March 12 - April 30, 2022 🔸🔹

IufXlOt.pngNew Faction & Story Prompts:
The Mage Court

As Archon Miriam closes her fist around the Order and replaces its former leadership with loyal Witchfinders, there are Mages in Ivras who will not stand idly by. Though once political enemies, the mages Prince-Consort Sabora and Enchanter Guro have created a fragile alliance, rallying support from respected Mages across the continent to fight back against mage oppression.

The Mage Court is made up of a wide array of politicians, renowned scholars, industry leaders and respected artisans, a a group of influential mages who often have very little in common besides a desire to see Miriam removed from power, and the Witchfinders' efforts sabotaged.

Using every cultural, political, and economic tool within reach, the Mage Court is a brand new organization fighting for mage liberation. Their de facto leader Sabora remains quiet and vague about achieving these goals, seemingly afraid of contradicting his husband the King's appointment of Miriam too vehemently.  Meanwhile, Guro and other battlemages in the Court are advocating a more ...aggressive approach. Mages of all stripes squabble for influence as their new faction takes shape.

The Mage Court is gathering considerable power to take on the Witchfinders' Order. Can they keep peace among their own ranks long enough to make a difference?

🔸 A New Faction emerges: Characters old and new are welcome to vie for power within the Mage Court, and steer the Court's efforts to thwart Miriam's Witchfinders. This faction is now yours to shape!

🔸 Story Prompts: Enjoy your choice of Story Prompts, or do all three!

New Shop & Character Types:
The Ley Lodge

The unstable magic permeating Ivras has created passages to locations unknown. The Ley Lodge is a mysterious place beyond our world, accessed through doors that appear wherever magic and fear converge.

Anathema's new shop, the Ley Lodge is full of powerful new items that allow players to create new kinds of characters and access other valuable in-game rewards. The first six items (drawn below by mod Apel) are: Dented Helm, Radiant Chalice, Ruinous Ichor, Shattered Totem, Luminous Plume and Tattered Banner.

0ZZ1NcK.png

The effects of these powerful objects, briefly summarized:
  • Dented Helm: Creates a Veteran Mage, with two magic abilities instead of one, and boosted starting stats.
  • Radiant Chalice: Creates a Paladin Mage, resistant to Corruption and Cost, with powerful magic.
  • Ruinous Ichor: Creates a Lich Mage, who feeds on Corruption, gaining +2 Power, +2 Discipline and +1 Cost with every point of Corruption.
  • Shattered Totem: Creates a Cursed Non-mage, whose body has been permanently altered by a brush with magic.
  • Luminous Plume: Allows a player to create an event, swarm hunt, major plot point, or group NPC, with admin guidance.
  • Tattered Banner: Creates a Legendary character, whose deeds ring through history and are known across the continent, and whose arrival is announced to all of Anathema
Items from the Ley Lodge are not purchased with Gold, and are instead exchanged for rare Ley Tokens, a new type of currency. Each object can be purchased with a single Ley Token, which are earned through in-game achievements such as corrupting a Mage into a monster, winning a site-wide contest, or other events. Ley Tokens can also be purchased for 1,000 Gold.  For this special event, we are giving one Ley Token away to a player! Click here for more info!

🔸 A full information page on the Ley Lodge can be found here.
🔸 If you have a Ley Token already, you may now redeem it via ModMail whenever you like!

New Site Coding and Content Overhaul:
It's Almost Here!

This very exciting update is a long time coming, and we can't wait to unveil Anathema's brand new Toyhouse website!  With the assistance of a coder, we are rebuilding Anathema's content from the bottom up, hoping to improve mobile friendliness, navigation, and readability.

Content is being cleaned up, consolidated, and reorganized, and a global navigation bar full of often-used links will make finding your favorite documents easier than ever.

  • Global link menu with important destinations
  • Brand new character creation guides

🔸✨🔸 Anniversary Story Prompts:

For this event, there are three Story Prompts available!  You may do as many of the prompts as you like with any of your characters! Each character can only do each prompt once.

At the end of the event, Mages will receive a stat point bonus for every Story Prompt they complete.

  • You may complete all prompts with the same character.
  • You may submit collabs and RP as prompt responses, but every participating character's choice must be clearly indicated for mods.
  • Prompt responses earn double gold!

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses.

🔸✨🔸 Prompt 1:

On the orders of unknown parties in the Mage Court, Ivratian troops are intercepting caravans and ships of captured mages on their way to Namarast. They seem to be approaching the Witchfinders in charge and accusing them of minor bureaucratic infractions to hold up their transport. This is not only holding up Witchfinders, but intercepting regular trade as well.

Whether your character is a Witchfinder, an Ivratian soldier, a merchant, an imprisoned mage, or just a bystander, they have found themselves in the middle of one such altercation.

What do they do?

  1. Speak up and take action, whatever your character stands for. Your character receives +1 Power.

  2. Start a fight, sow chaos. Your character has their reasons. Your character receives +1 Corruption.

  3.  Initiate a debate. Problems are best solved with words. Your character receives +1 Discipline.

  4. Observe, and mind their business. Your character receives -1 Cost. If your character already has 0 Cost, you may choose to take a point of Corruption instead.

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses.

🔸✨🔸 Prompt 2:

Rumors circling this Mage Court suggest that some of them are willing to accept help from “unsavory” elements to achieve their goal of undermining Archon Miriam and her Witchfinders. It’s unclear if Sabora themself is involved in such dealings, but recent news items seem to point toward the rumors being true.

How does your character feel about that?

  1. Underhanded tactics aren’t enough. Whether your character favors the Archon or the Court, they believe open force is the only way to get things done. Your character receives +1 Corruption.

  2. Profit is profit. You don’t blame everyday Ivratians for making a buck on a power struggle. Your character may even get in on this. Your character receives -1 Cost. If your character already has 0 Cost, you may choose to take a point of Corruption instead.

  3.  Results are results. You agree that your preferred faction’s goals should be achieved by any means necessary. Your character may even get in on this. Your character receives +1 Power.

  4. Upstanding Ivratians – especially nobles – should rely on the merits of their beliefs to enact change, not crime. There has to be a better way. Your character receives +1 Discipline.

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses.

🔸✨🔸 Prompt 3:

Although most of the Mage Court’s actions have been political and bureaucratic in nature, there are some instances in which the conflicts between Witchfinders and their opponents have become violent, especially those spearheaded by Enchanter Guro with her controversial, militarized approach to mage liberation. Volunteers have been called on both sides of the conflict to help handle the aftermath of such altercations, from healers to cooks.

How does your character answer the call?

  1. They don't. This is not your character’s fight, and getting involved is too risky. Your character receives -1 Cost. If your character already has 0 Cost, you may choose to take a point of Corruption instead.

  2. Your character lends their talents enthusiastically to their faction of choice. Your character receives +1 Power.

  3.  Your character feels duty-bound to help others, regardless of factions. Your character receives +1 Discipline.

  4. Your character is already on the front lines, eager to be part of the skirmish. Your character receives +1 Corruption.

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses.

🔸✨🔸 Win a Ley Token!

Ley Tokens are a valuable currency that can only be spent at the mysterious Ley Lodge. Each can be used only once to claim a rare and powerful item from this special shop.

To enter to win a Ley Token your own:

  1.  Join Anathema! You must be a player with at least one accepted mage. Players old and new can enter!

  2. Show us what you might like to do with a Ley Token! Write or draw something related to the character or event you'd create if you had a Ley Token. Leave your entry as a reply to this very comment!

  3. Use the Gold Guide to determine how much your entry is worth... then double it! Your doubled Gold amount will be added to your bank, just to say thanks for entering!

  4. Wait ever so patiently. At the end of the Anniversary event, we will randomly draw a winner to receive the Token!

Entries must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Post your entry as a reply to this comment. Every player may only enter once. If you win, you do not necessarily have to use your Ley Token to create what you depict in your entry.

All entries must be created for this contest!  Already-existing content of characters/designs you own is not valid for entry.

And the winner is... Manacats !!!

The raffle results were randomly rolled on livestream on 5/1/22! Congratulations, manacats! Your prize has been added to the Bank document!

Choo choo! đźš‚đźš‚

Concept document for Emeline Rothwell, a wild mage with the ability to transport people and goods through a dangerous landscape. Will use a Ley Token for her creation, the Chalice, as she has overcome the corruption others have placed on her and has made it her mission to protect those from being exploited.

Gold breakdown: 910 words [9] + Milestone bonus of 500 [2] + Magic Use [1] + World Specific [1] + Expansion of Lore [2] = 15 gold

15 gold x 2 [event bonus] = 30 gold total!

Creating Ivea with a dented helm, giving her not only the ability to prolong her own lifespan by consuming blood, but also seeing the taint on ones soul.

+2 Fullbody, +2 Color (full), +2 Shading (full), +1 Ornamental BG, +2 Wings = 9 Gold x2 event bonus 18 Gold total

I would use the Ley Token to bring in a cursed non mage character with the shattered totem, a dealer of monster parts who enjoys peculiar delicacies (but not without its cost)!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SpjF8-6n4XdsFlU69gJbtVLz7EkkrH0Hrvj5KnI1L2c/edit?usp=sharing (TW: Gross imagery, body horror, gore. I've put this in the document too!)

Gold breakdown: 519 words [5 gold] + Milestone bonus of 500 [+2] + Evocative [+2] = 9 gold x 2 [event bonus] = 18 gold!

A shattered totem would be used to introduce Ser Warin de Vaux, a crown knight-turned vagabond from a land beyond Ivras; loyal to a king puppeted by vile magical forces, driven by a trusted sorcerer, unbeknownst to him. Framed for his murder when the curtain began to fall on certain plans, Warin arrived on the shores of Ivras with naught but a solid oath to rid dark magics.

https://toyhou.se/15379219.ser-warin#47210012 Fullbody+Background x2 event bonus = 14 gold < 3

would apply ruinous ichor to shrike ( https://toyhou.se/8966095.-s--/13224029.anathema -- profile not created for the event, just linking for reference)
unable to die, he becomes a ghost of who he once was, living solely for the consumption of blood, and without realizing, corruption ...

content/trigger warnings (are also on the doc): graphic imagery, implications of addiction, consumption of blood, and violence.

Using a Dented Helmet or Ruinous Ichor, I would bring in Ezekiel: https://toyhou.se/13654636.ezekiel/14941068.anathema. Ezekiel, a resurrected undead mage, has been around the last many centuries. He's firstly a former knight, and mage secondly, but he's skilled in both aspects.

Bust +1, Ornamental Background +1, Event Bonus x2 = 4 Gold

I would like to use the "Ruinous Ichor" token for Faisal, an ex-general of a far off kingdom who, after the unfortunate circumstances of his adoptive daughter's disappearance and a run-in with a related corrupted mage, became a lich mage of a most uncanny variety.
