Overview

Brief summaries of each species, for those who would rather have the gist than read an entire article about each race.

HumansThe most populous race, their most defining feature is that they are entirely physical & not inherently magical beings. Always humanoid, with very limited shapeshifting ability.
FaeA mysterious and ancient race that prefers to keep to themselves.  They are ethereal, magical beings who come in all forms and claim their existence blooms from the inherent Will of Life.
DemonsHuman emotion stirs the metaphysical plane into chaos; every once in a while chunks of similar energies are bundled together and spat out into the physical realm in the form of a demon.  Like fae they are magical & ethereal & come in many forms; unlike fae their continued existence depends on proximity to humans so they prefer to live among them.

Humans

About

Humans make up most of the sapient population of the planet, and have spread to nearly every corner of it.  They do not so much adapt to their surroundings as they do make their surroundings adapt to them.

Social Aspects

With their being so widespread, there is no one unified human culture and they interact with and view the world differently even among themselves.  Fae tend to view humans as clunky, destructive, ultimately lesser creatures.  Demons tend to do poorly travelling between cultures, especially if the idea they're born of is less prevalent/nonexistent in their new surroundings.

Magical Aspects

Despite not being inherently magical(with few exceptions), humanity has learned how to harness magical energy and use it to their own ends.  They also as a species passively create turmoil in the metaphysical plane, which mostly presents itself in the form of demons.

Physical Aspects

Their most defining physical feature as a sapient species is that they are extremely physical(as compared to the fae, or demons, who are much less so).  For the most part they are restricted by the physical rules of beasts and other materials.  That said they come in many forms, some less classically-humanoid than others.

Monsters

Shapeshifting is not overly uncommon in humans, albeit at a much slower pace and of less-conscious decision than fae or demons.  It is often triggered by puberty, mental trauma, or otherwise in response to large changes.  They always remain recognizably humanoid, no matter what new features they gain.  People who have features that aren't the human standard are called monstrous, or just monster if they're particularly-deformed(monster is more of a reclaimed slur type of term, I just don't have a more polite one made yet,,).  While rarer, human children can also just be born monstrous, and over time either lose their atypical features or gain even more of them.

There is a wide array of superstition surrounding Monstery humans, ranging from benign to fear-mongering mainly.  Many believe monstrous features are a corruption caused by having a rotten soul or making pacts with fae/demons, or being cursed by fae/demons.  Or sometimes parents(especially single parents) of monstrous children will be accused of having copulated with an actual animal to produce their weird-shaped kid.

Fae

About

Fae are reclusive, when it comes to humans, and since humanity is so widespread they only inhabit a specific few regions around the globe.  Culture varies in their isolation from each other.  They're made of life?  Or as a byproduct of life happening, just magical masses that can take any form they want.

They take their appearances very seriously, and if two decide that they're too aesthetically similar, they'll p much just fight over who has to go change their outfit/legs/whatever. It's only acceptable for two beings to look the same if they are a part of the same individual.

Faewilds

Faewilds are any region humans recognize as being fae-controlled.  These come in two flavors: either areas that humans have never successfully colonized(generally because the environment there is too harsh to survive in), or areas that the fae have forcefully defended or reclaimed from humanity.

The In-Between is a borderland/overlap between fae and human-controlled land.  In some places these are actively fought over, in others warily shared by the two groups.

Faewilds tend to just look like wilderness, the fae tend not to build physical structures and instead constuct faerealms, which are small pocket dimensions that they essentially use the same way a human would use a building.  Just made with magic instead of physical material.

Trivia

  • they don't really understand individuality in flesh creatures.  Generally if they see two creatures of the same species, who also aren't fighting each other, they assume it's the same individual
  • similarly, if they actually witness a death but then see another one of that species later, they will assume the first one dying was just a fragment that expired suddenly
  • don't really get corpses either, anything without life in it is considered a rock or dirt of some kind
  • sustained by proximity to life, generally become stronger the older they get

About

Demons are powerful magical beings who thrive off of the emotional energy of humans and are driven to immerse themselves in the essence they were born of.

Life Cycle

Intricate, near-imperceptible spells are woven from the synchronized emotion of humans, growing until they break through the metaphysical plane in the form of a new demon.  They can be born of something as general as joy or fear, to something as specific as a hatred of spiders or adoration of a certain celebrity and their birth rate is only increasing with the expansion of social media.

Appearance-wise they tend to be humanoid, but are not restricted to one form or another as they are not entirely physical beings.  They always seem to be recognizable as themselves no matter how they change their appearances.

Aside from complete deprivation from human contact for extended amounts of time, it's difficult if impossible to kill a natural demon, being rid of one is usually accomplished either by sealing it away or persuading it to go somewhere else.

Social Aspects

Demons tend to be territorial when it comes to other demons, but love & need the company of humans.  Many demons prefer to survive off of ambient energy and live quietly among people, often disguised as a person themself or some sort of common urban creature.  This preference is stronger in areas where openly existing as a demon is dangerous because of human prejudice(they're unlikely to be killed, but being trapped in a jar & likely harvested to power some sort of enchantment isn't a good time).

Some demons aim for larger meals of targeted emotion(emotion they inspire in humans that is aimed at them specifically), either due to greed or simply because they require more energy to maintain their form than ambient emotion can provide.  These demons are more likely to either butt heads with humans who don't appreciate being terrorized, or alternatively be deified.

Deifying/Patron Demons

Usually this is done for demons who have a positive impact on a community, but humans will worship anything, honestly.  Typically a patron demon/deity has to meet the following requirements:

  • Widely known to the humans in their territory
  • powerful enough to maintain a hold on the territory (ie they can defend themselves against humans and other demons that might challenge them)
  • worshiped in some manner, usually via building of shrines & offerings left at said shrines, festivals/performances, etc. (whether they are given in respect/thanks or as appeasement in hopes that they will spare their humans is irrelevant)

Summoning

'Summoning' a demon isn't so much calling one that already exists as it is forcing the creation of a new one by mimicking their natural creation process.  Demons created in this way are often crude and unstable constucts, and more often than not will simply fall apart once their purpose is served.  Possession of a living creature or being sealed into an object (traditionally a clay vessel of some sort) will extend their lifetime significantly.

Hybrids

Not super common but sometimes a demon and a human make a baby and they're double-impossible to kill.
