what are the best ways to sell adopts ?

Posted 4 years, 11 months ago by LaPandaBlasee

i'm really wondering since i'm in debt and nobody wants any of my adopts (it's probably because of my low art quality but uuuhh)

So i'm asking you guys if you have some tips to sell adopts ? Like a really good website ? Or a magical spell ? I'm desperate...

Where do you post them?

I'm not sure about the 'best' way, but I personally have never turned down a design I liked due to 'low quality' art.
If I like it, I like it, but I shop for designs - not good looking art.

I've found the ones I've bought through design/adopt/sales groups on deviantart, for the most part.
Or as of recently, I've found myself digging through TH forums.

I've found putting multiple designs on the same page helps designs sell when they might not have on their own.
Putting designs in groups can make kind of mediocre designs stand out more compared to others.
Any designs left over, I would then re-group and re-post a while later, couple months or so later.

Justt-K has some pretty solid tips I can also vouch for! I also think it's super important to build an audience for yourself, brand yourself and also to make a lot of connections! Adopt business is very social so being a part of several dA groups and popping up in adopt related corners of the internet is pretty crucial for getting more people interested in your content!

Also, in my experience, the execution of the adopts does a lot! Make sure they have attractive thumbnails (you can check it by uploading your wips to dA's stash or zooming out your art file) to grab the attention of people, and to decide whether or not your adopt file needs some sort of background of if it's better to keep it transparent.

I've definitely seen some artists drawing what others would consider "low quality" sell quite easily because of the way they market themselves! I do admit that it also takes two other things: time and luck. Certainly even the best of adoptable makers don't always sell so well unless they build both a large and loyal audience.

I kind of got tired of dA but I think it's still a pretty good avenue to sell. I find though that Amino is more friendly to beginner artists (if you consider yourself one), but just a note that it's a bit harder there to sell for real currency to pay off a debt, as they introduced their own currency there that has become equal competition to both point and USD sellers. Still, I definitely sold there a lot more compared to anywhere else I've been!

I'm also trying Instagram at the moment! You get more reach so long as you use the hashtags, but it's a relatively new community that is still learning the ropes of adoptable making, so it's a bit hard to sell there but some have made a niche. I think Facebook is starting to join in too, but I've mostly seen furries sell well there compared to humans ^ ^ ;;

So if you're really up for it, I do recommend branching out / putting yourself out to different platforms (with the same name so that people can easily recognize you!) Other than that, the others have given good tips as well :D Try to look at adopts that do sell well and list down what makes them appealing in your eyes. Is it the background? The colors? The pose? The theme? The way the elements are placed together? And then try to translate it into your own work!

edit: also it pays to be patient. Stuff can take a while to sell, but if you're persistent, you're bound to find a buyer that's willing to get the design. Bumping stuff through groups, reposting (or relisting in TH) definitely helps!

That makes sense! Maybe erm communicate that it's an emergency? I know that some people avoid them at times because they're iffy about it, but you can really say that you're willing to work/draw a lot of art to pay off your debt, which may make some people willing to buy from you to help you out! There are good people out there who don't mind doing that o w o (or are more swayed to buy from people that do need the money more).

I took a peek at your dA account and saw the chibis!! They're super cute ;; I can suggest a few things for you to do if you want:
(Since your account only has a small amount of followers, some of these tactics are there to boost engagement with the community)

  • Create a raffle journal for maybe one of your Chibi-Yon poses. People love free things, and even if some people might unfollow you after the event (the meanies), there is still a good percentage that doesn't, and it gets the word out to those who don't even join the raffle! You might eventually find someone that wants to buy your commissions :D
  • Try to branch out: I don't know if this is just me, but dA has a lot of male characters, furries, and ferals. If you're willing to experiment and add to your collection of examples, I think showing off that you can do those would be great!
  • Create a sale when you hit a certain target. Maybe at the 50 / 75 / 100 watchers mark (take your pick!), create a discount sale or even a bulk sale with your poses!
  • Interact with the community! I've been in dA for 7 years now, and one thing I definitely learned is that posting and waiting for people to see your art isn't really going to get you very far. I've seen what other people call "low quality" have 4,000 or more watchers, so how do they do it? They interact. They comment. They join groups. They favorite. Whatever means that generate a notification in other people's inboxes, that's what they do. Now, I'm not saying you have to go to the extreme, but try to find artists who have similar tastes (drawing girls, chibis, etc) and interact with them! You'll make some friends along the way and sometimes they'll help you out! Find art trades if you want too, that also can help your name out there.
    • The lowest effort method that I do is llama-spamming, which is a lot of clicking but tbh I've gotten some followers from it (albeit they can be random and weird). One Click Llama Badge is your best friend.
I hope these help !!
