Language Translations for Creation

Posted 4 years, 5 months ago (Edited 2 years, 6 months ago) by Dez

Hey! I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I think it'd be cool to have a place for bilingual people to translate some cool phrases or words for creations. Personally I'm looking to see if someone can correctly translate "You can't handle the truth" from English to Latin.

I'm not bilingual myself, unfortunately, but maybe others who want correct translations can build this post up and help each other.

So what kinds of things do you want translated for your creations and how do you use them? I like using phrases or words to create names or locations :)

Edit: Wow, this post blew up more than I originally thought it would! From now on, I'll try to list the languages and the users that speak said languages below to make it easier for others to find the proper person they need! If there's any problems at all with what's listed, please let me know and I'll change it ASAP. If there are languages that are together that the native speakers suggest be separated, please also let me know! I don't want to offend anyone and I don't know much about different languages (but I'm learning a lot from everyone). Thank you to everyone for your assistance!

If anyone wants to know anything specific to translate, please ping in the forum someone from the list under the correct language. There are many people with many skills who have offered their time to help :)

Please try to keep things PG13, as there may be minors present. Also if anyone in the list wishes to be removed from it for any reason, please let me know! I will do so with no questions asked.

Personally I don't usually use words from languages I don't speak for my characters, but I love translating stuff for other people so I like your idea.

Too bad I only speak languages people aren't usually interested in...

Dez

Really? What languages do you speak?

Seiden

I can translate things in French, if needed. When I see french sentences on character profiles, most of the time they are wrong :(

Dez

Seiden That's awesome! Yeah, the whole incorrect translations thing is why I'm trying to start this up ._. How fluent in French are you? :0 I've never met anyone that speaks it!

RU-HX

I occasionally handle German in my stories because having native English speakers trying to learn it and talking to native German speakers helps me to learn stuff. Thing is, I'm a complete beginner with the language so there's a very good chance I'm using the wrong words since I sometimes have to pull from google translate so something like this would be handy!

Context how I may use it in a fic because writing the language barrier is my jam (baring in mind the conversation's happening in German):

"I seem to have the beginnings of suspected nerve" Raven seems to struggle to find the words he's after. "Wounds," Raven says pulling a face, he seems to know he got the wrong word and imitates a shaking hand as he speaks.

Friedrich gets the gist of what he's trying to say anyway and offers "beschädigung?" with a sense of smug satisfaction. This conversation's clearly challenging the limited German Raven seems to understand.

This is also one of the excerpts where I'm not sure if I used the right words. Raven's trying to say nerve damage but doesn't know the German word for damage. Neither do I. I got beschädigung as a translation but I'm not 100% sure it's right.

Dez

RU-HX That's really interesting! I don't think I've seen anyone do that kind of thing in their stories before. I tried learning a bit of German from Duolingo but don't think I went over either of those words. Maybe someone here will assist :)

Cliodna

Hey. :) I can't share random words/sayings/sentences but I can translate things to estonian and try my hand on simple finnish (not by any means good at it though).

Dez

Cliodna Great! Thanks for offering :) I'm forward to seeing some translations to Estonian!

sikuriini

Dez

I'm a native Finnish speaker and i'm fluent in English. I also know a bit of Swedish and i'm learning Russian.

I love translating stuff to and from Finnish

Dez

sikuriini That's awesome! I don't think I've heard Finnish before. How would you say an average greeting in Finnish? :)

sikuriini

Dez

"Hei" , "Moi" and "Terve" are pretty basic Finnish greetings

Cliodna

Dez Add in "Moro!" if, like me, you learnt finnish in the Tampere/Saimaa region. :) I recommend you check out how it sounds, it's a pretty-sounding language. Very similar to estonian, but I'd say more melodic and umlaut-heavy. Lots of good rock and metal music in it as well if that's your thing.

Seiden

I'm French, so I'd say I'm pretty fluent in this language :')
(but actually not really fluent in English... I know my character profiles are FULL of mistakes T_T)

Dez

sikuriini Those are so fascinating! :0 It's incredible to see just how different greetings alone are.

Dez

Cliodna I'll have to check it out then! I'm always up for hearing new languages. If you recommend any music, I'd be happy to listen to some! I already listen to a huge variety of music :)
