The colors on your work is really well done! The pixels are super clean too, and I can tell you're good with animal anatomy!

I think my only critique would be on the shading

Some of the shadow shapes on your drawings, for example in this one: https://toyhou.se/jackaling/art#20730077  are a little vague and seem to only cover the edges (which kind of results in us not entirely knowing where the light is covering. I think the term for this is like, "clouding"?? I don't entirely recall. It's really clear on the pants part. I think if some of the areas you didn't shade on the pants, (like the hip area on the right side of the pants) were a darker shade from the local color,

You did a really good job with the shadow on the back leg in this one! But the wings have the same issue where the shadow is really only on the edges.

But yeah, It's best to follow with shadow shapes like so, which would define the 3D shape of the image better

With your permission, I can do an edit to explain what I mean with the shadows! Let me know if you have any questions

jellophish thank you so much, i REALLY appreciate it because i’m trying to spend more time developing my knowledge of shading and shading techniques. i’d be fine with an edit if you wouldn’t mind spending the time on it, i think it would help a lot to visualize! c:

So this is my edit! I found it easier to do on one of your non-pixel drawings so I hope this is okay!

I had a diagram on where the highlight/ambient light/local color/shadow, but I hope this makes it clear! The other thing I did was add more values.

As far as values go, you did have like the one shadow shade for some things, like the hoodie for example, but as I did color picking, I noticed they were colors of the same value. This can work, but I think if you wanted to create a better sense of depth or form, they should be atleast a value or two darker. I added some on the hoodie!

Here's the before and after! I pretty much added more shadow shapes to define the volumes of parts of the body, or clothing pieces. One really good example in the change here is right in the pelvic area for the shorts. This character is wearing a hoodie, so the hoodie hanging over that area would create some kind of shadow. Of course, it's best to use reference to really get your shadows right, but that's what I approximate where the shadow would be. The same goes for the tail - the body of the character is hovering over this tail, therefore they would cast a shadow on the tail, a little more.

Lastly, ambient light (while I didn't put it everywhere in the picture cause I kind of did this quickly) can help with making things look more 3D too!

0-1_bounces_in_3D_light_setups.jpg

I'm mostly using this image to show how ambient light works, but yeah - since light bounces around, color can show up in the shadow. So like if you took a piece of blank, white paper and put something even like, a pink hairbrush, you're going to see at least a hint of pink in the shadow.

I think this video explains it better than I do!

I showed the direction of my light, and I'm not sure if it's the one you were going for entirely??

I hope this is clear and helpful ^^
