Making your own OC/Story site?

Has anyone ever thought about making their own website for their projects? Basically a site that would outline your universe, have a cast page with character profiles, galleries, an about page, and a comic/prose section if you're into that, etc. I feel that it would be neat to have, especially if you're serious about your project or if you just want to move away from toyhou.se and have more control over your works. Toyhou.se is very convinient and helps me to streamline my work, but I think one day I would like to also have all of my information somewhere else as a better form of self promo and security. I know coding is hard and hosting/hiring can be expensive but it'd be nice to see more people make their own customized little webpages.

In 2020 I decided to play around with Wix to see what kind of features they had:

I managed to make a few things, including a character directory. Wix is relatively easy to use, but there are limited options for custom html and css, but I think the drag-and-drop style makes up for it. I feel Wix would be a good alternative for hosting your characters, giving each character their own page and bio and adding a few main references. You only get 3GB of hosting space for text and images with the free plan, so it may be limiting, but you could maybe link or embed an external gallery on the characters page if needed.

Currently, as of 2023, I'm using Mundialis.
It's made by one of the main contributors of Lorekeeper (ARPG framework that many closed species groups are using). There's a demo site located here. It's a Laravel-based web app framework that anyone can obtain a copy of and use for their own worldbuilding. You can make templates and automate character and page creation, upload images to galleries, create timeline events, etc. You do need more coding knowledge compared to TH, but there's a helpful support discord.

My site is still very much a WIP with lots of placeholders but I wanted to share in the hopes that more people can use it!

Will bump and update this every once in a while to hear from new people. Thanks for telling me about your creative endeavors by the way, it's really nice seeing people being so passionate about their projects!

yeah, id like to do that someday! i've thought about uploading all my comics and things to a weebly blog - i tried tumblr but it felt kind of unstable and wordpress was too formal. weebly has a tag system so it looks pretty convenient. i actually don't really like TH's gallery feature, with the resizing and everything... i currently use weebly for my personal site and it's very customizable even on the free plan.

the only reason i haven't made a OC site yet is i guess my story still feels young- i dont want to post a comic and then 2 months later make a post going "this is wrong now!!!" baha. right now i share them privately with my friends which is good for feedback and it's growing up fast, so maybe i'll have a site eventually. i've also thought about compiling all the development so far into a sketchbook, but it's sooo much work X__X

Having a site dedicated just to OCs and their stories would be fun! I have one for my art that I made with WIX. It's really easy to use so I might try it again.

Trowa

I have started one for me and my friend as we have 16 yrs of rping that im slowly turning into story. Its not for anyone really but us but my ultimate project is a 350+ art book (as a gift to her) with story parts and figured this would be a great means of shifting to the final project.

TH’s worlds has also been a huge help in organizing the general information as well and keeping progression, new characters and rewrites in order with timelines as we kinda move through the timeline. So once i get everything down on TH I plan on moving maybe to weebly with more concise geared and specific info for the art book.

MymulND

I used Wix for my species' lore, I wanted to use it to host the comics about them but I'll see how this goes when it's out.

Since I have other universes, I wanted to make other sites too, but I'm running low on time now...

Amber-Lynne

I plan on it eventually!
I have a set of characters for a webcomic I plan on doing. So I'll be hosting that online somewhere.

Beyond that, that's... really never crossed my mind.
Hmmmmm, maybe I should.

I actually used to have one at some point on weebly, but stopped updating when I moved fully back to TH. It's just so much more convenient for me here but if/when TH one day dies I'll probably have no choice but to get back to webpage stuff. Might want to try out something other than weebly tho because it's incredibly clunky and at least when I still used the site the autosave function couldn't be turned off (you can only imagine the disaster cocktail with a clunky lagging/glitching site, autosave and text/image heavy content)

Like others said making your own site could be best. I personally use Worldanvil. It was used for ppl interested in tabletoprpg I believe but many folks use it because you can place information you'd like. They have a pretty large detail on what you'd like to enter. Extra things cost money of course, but I am satisfied with my free version but if you like customizing then you may enjoy that part.

SonicMania

I definitely plan on having one should I get deeper into development of my work. I have some ideas of what the name and design would look like, it'd kind of having a Y2K & ocean inspired aesthetic & color scheme is that makes sense. I have a lot of characters so the organization of the character page would be important so it doesn't end up cluttered. There'd probably be little icons displaying each character. And for whichever character you click on it takes you to their page. Important or personal characters would have custom pages themed around their aesthetic. If the character has a different form or look there'll be a little button to toggle to see that look. Writing this out is really inspiring me to make a mock-up of this... Maybe something I'll work on next month!

I honestly haven't seen that many OC sites, but the ones I've browsed definitely were cool, even if it's made with template it's still personalized by someone. The closest I've came to having a 'site' was making a carrd. I could probably make an OC themed Carrd but honestly I'd rather have the effort go toward a full on website.

Baratomott

onessu I tried Wordpress and yeah it is suuper formal and the layout was a bit confusing for me AHAHAH. Weebly was a lot nicer and the themes are really nice so I might end up using it for something else in the future. And I feel you! Keeping up with ongoing stories is a lot of work, but it's really satisfying to see everything come together, hopefully when the time comes you'll be able to make a nice website with your friends' help! Love your art btw!

kohaku_dragon, Amber-Lynne You should! I'd love to see what you make if you ever got around to it!

Trowa That would be a really sweet gift, I love the dedication you two have. I hope TH updates some of the world features to help ease along the process!

MymulND Wix is super useful, I hope the comic goes well when you get to it! And yeah, I feel like I'm always pressed for time too, especially since I try to do everything at once. I hope you get around to everything soon

Caine Weebly didn't have an undo button and that was one of the things that single handedly made it so hard for me AJSJSH I checked out your website though and it was really nice so I'm sure where ever you move next after TH will be great!

galaxycreations I had never heard of Worldanvil until you mentioned it and I most definitely plan on checking this site out, I looked around at some of the featured worlds and there are so many possibilities. Thank you so much!

SonicMania I've seen OC themed Carrds too, it's really neat especially when you need to give someone your character references on the fly! I'm glad talking about your project here got you motivated btw, good luck with everything!

Caine

@baratomott YEAH and no undo button + autosave is a real recipe for a disaster, I honestly don't know how anyone would even think of that as a remotely good idea?? But thank you, I'm gonna assume you checked my current portfolio/linkpage since I don't have the OC site linked to my profiles atm! It definitely works well enough for that purpose but yeah,,, in character profile stuff I'd like a site that isn't so unforgiving towards mistakes

Baratomott

Caine, it was the one under the Sinfonia/VN tab on your profile that says official site, I realize now it was for your game but it's still really nicely put together AHAHA

Amber-Lynne

Baratomott .... I will........ eventually. It's just... starting the damned thing. Lol.

I want to get into the lively stuff. I hate set up/exposition and the like. Lol

if when I ever get it going, I can link if you want?

zinnia

cool to see this thread revived!! and also cool to see mundialis has a demo site now, too *--* just looking thru it is really tempting to try it out, too bad i already have so much on my current site ASDFGHJK

https://pokeau.com is my website : D perpetually a wip.. i use wordpress as a framework for it (key word as a framework, i dont use them for hosting)

im always the guy to suggest ppl make their own oc/story websites because i think theyre very cool and can do a lot more than any socmed ever could

roseeater

quietly waiting for more people to post about theirs... i always get really excited when more people decide to have their own sites for their projects. mine is here: https://dptr.neocities.org/

theres a lot i just wasnt able to do but its so satisfying to update even if html/css can be really annoying or tedious. as long as i know how to code it, i can customize things as much as i want :]

ive never heard of it before but mundialis seems really interesting. i like having my neocities site be the public showcase, while i have a private way of saving aaaall of my info for myself. for a while i wanted to use mediawiki but i could not figure it out at all @_@ i currently use notion for this but tbh i'm always considering if theres something better i can use instead lol

i will admit tho, in my experience having my ocs/story in site form can be quite lonely in a way? you can't get feedback and conversations the way you can on here. art is so important for connecting with others so it's disappointing to not have that happen imo
