Making your own OC/Story site?

Has anyone ever thought about making their own website for their projects? Basically a site that would outline your universe, have a cast page with character profiles, galleries, an about page, and a comic/prose section if you're into that, etc. I feel that it would be neat to have, especially if you're serious about your project or if you just want to move away from toyhou.se and have more control over your works. Toyhou.se is very convinient and helps me to streamline my work, but I think one day I would like to also have all of my information somewhere else as a better form of self promo and security. I know coding is hard and hosting/hiring can be expensive but it'd be nice to see more people make their own customized little webpages.

In 2020 I decided to play around with Wix to see what kind of features they had:

I managed to make a few things, including a character directory. Wix is relatively easy to use, but there are limited options for custom html and css, but I think the drag-and-drop style makes up for it. I feel Wix would be a good alternative for hosting your characters, giving each character their own page and bio and adding a few main references. You only get 3GB of hosting space for text and images with the free plan, so it may be limiting, but you could maybe link or embed an external gallery on the characters page if needed.

Currently, as of 2023, I'm using Mundialis.
It's made by one of the main contributors of Lorekeeper (ARPG framework that many closed species groups are using). There's a demo site located here. It's a Laravel-based web app framework that anyone can obtain a copy of and use for their own worldbuilding. You can make templates and automate character and page creation, upload images to galleries, create timeline events, etc. You do need more coding knowledge compared to TH, but there's a helpful support discord.

My site is still very much a WIP with lots of placeholders but I wanted to share in the hopes that more people can use it!

Will bump and update this every once in a while to hear from new people. Thanks for telling me about your creative endeavors by the way, it's really nice seeing people being so passionate about their projects!

So is Wix or Mundialis better?

Ooooh this thread saw a revival 👀

Anyways, I know it's hella unfinished and updates are sluggish, but I do have a worldbuilding wiki for my project here! All it needs is a proper layout, cause I am not a huge fan of the current one. This wiki runs on WikiTide, which is one of the wikifarms using MediaWiki out there.

poyoy yesss i saw your guestbook entry! i wanted to thank you for your kind words so im glad you posted here ^_^ my site used to have a more simple design but i wanted it to look super nice, and i decided on a sleek black/grey color scheme so that the colors in the art would stand out better

if anyone else out there prefers html/css for their oc/project websites (or is thinking about it) there is luckily a LOT of resources out there to help, and i would recommend at least trying it out. i started off messing with html with making small edits to (and attempting to make) tumblr themes many years ago so i have a bit of an inclination towards html.

oh cool this is right up my alley. i've had a website for a long time but last year (nov 2022) it went through a big revamp and i swapped it over to neocities to have more direct control over its html/css. it's here: https://numbersstory.com/

i also have another server i host my character stuff on, like galleries/profiles: https://characters.numbersstory.com so i can use php and mysql. i'm still working on mirroring all my toyhouse stuff onto there but i'm keeping at it. data entry is annoying lol

bduck mundialis' frontpage mentions it's laravel-based which is a php framework so no go on using it on neocities. the setup information's on the github page, but you can download it and mess around with it with XAMPP if you look into that. if you want to put it on a website you would need to get some sort of real hosting service. here's a list of reccs i see passed around a lot. if you want to explore webdev with more than just html/css you should get XAMPP anyways to try messing around with databases/php

hope its ok to manually bump, i want more ppl to make oc sites 0_0

Ooh yess !

I made my Art website on Wix in 2016 and my OC site in 2017.

You can check them out here: Website || OC Website

I am also working on one for my original species and worldbuilding project, they're unpublished and private for now though as I am not ready to post it just yet, but it's been in the making since 2016 as well ^^
