Anyone else have a problem with writing TOO much?

So I just replied to one of the roleplays I’m doing. I thought it would quick and concise. I was just going to reply while listening to YouTube really casually then to reply to another roleplay.

But no. The author in me told me to describe EVERYTHING. I ended up replying with seven paragraphs, 14000 characters.

Does anyone else have the problem that they just end up writing too much and intimidate people away from roleplaying with you? 😔

Oh god, absolutely. Writing concisely is a skill I've had to painfully painfully learn lol, but knowing what's important to keep in can sometimes be just as effective or more effective than longer descriptive prose =) Goes double in an RP format where it's hard to reply to every points without a break to get in. I could write paragraphs but every now and then I like to swing a one-line reply for better flow anyway.

Arcaino Awh well thank you that makes me feel a little better about it! Luckily, the girl I’m roleplaying with responds with at minimum four paragraphs herself so she’s cool with if! But the amount of times I’ve started a roleplay, only for us to silently agree to stop because I write a crazy amount and they respond with one sentence is truly uncanny.

LunarCherub A JOY? Oh that’s made my day thank you! I’m glad to know there’s other people that appreciate a long and detailed response. All my friends that also RP tell me that I write way more than they could ever and that’s always made me feel incredibly concerned that I seem to ‘try-hard’.

wormancer I physically cannot do one line if I try! I’ll write a sentence and then my mind rushes with more things I HAVE to say. Even in ‘casual’ roleplay I still end up doing at least two paragraphs!!

I usually feel like I'm not writing enough. The last fight scene I wrote took just about 4500 words and spanned over 10 entire pages.

I do leave a bit to the imagination, but I try to get the point across of what it actually happening. I think being over-verbose in writing can be a detriment. There was something I read long ago that said your reader will imagine a far more fantastical or gruesome scene if you leave it up to their imagination.

That's not to say don't add any detail to your writing, but describing every individual blade of grass is too much

for my rp stories, i normally write between 600-1200 per reply and my partners usually match — or write more! if your audience enjoys it then that’s all that matters. personally, i can’t get into shorter script styles. i love beefy replies too much to go on a word diet! i want a picture painted for me. build the setting and mood, give me a glimpse at your character’s inner cogs. plus with bigger posts, i generally have a few days between replies so i don’t feel constantly pressured to fire back answers!
