[art thread] salida draws! ...sometimes

Posted 3 years, 6 months ago (Edited 2 years, 8 months ago) by salida

All of these art sharing threads are really nice and seem like a fun way to share and talk about your work..... so i'm making one :D I can talk FOREVER about art related stuff because I have a lot to say but I'll see if i can keep it brief...

As for a little introduction: my biggest interest is of course art, it takes up a large part of my brain (perhaps too much) and otherwise i like to play vidya games... I don't really have a big project i'm working on anymore and instead i like to draw little comics or illustrations of my ocs. Not quite as much commitment as the webcomic i was intending...

I hope to be some kinda illustrator or storyboard artist in the future. You can find my social media links here, i used to be pretty inactive on social media but ive been trying to upload art and be active again ^_^;; im currently in a weird art spot. The program i use is clip studio paint on my laptop :) recently ive started drawing on procreate too.

hope you enjoy your stay :]

First art I decided to post here is actually kinda an oldie... some edelgard fire emblem fanart from about a month before the game released (drawn late june 2019). I was looking thru things i could post and i thought this would be fun to talk about even if its not what i'd call recent work. (heres the imgur link so you can see it full-size)

I see a ton of errors in this that I'm just aching to fix (and i might try my hand at a redraw even if i basically never draw fanart anymore) but theres also a lot i still enjoy. This is probably some of the most unique shading ive ever done, using a brush thats used moreso for inking/lineart (its called the yeti rough inker iirc?) Recently its been painfully obvious to me how much of my art is halfbody person at 3/4 or front angle... So for a redraw i'd do a fullbody in an isometric-type angle perhaps? It would be fun to draw her aymr too.

I really love the idea of redrawing old art even if i rarely do it. the way I would like to approach it is to draw the image as though i drew it today, instead of copying the composition or pose perfectly i could test how much ive learned by sort of ignoring the original drawing and redrawing the concept instead of the actual image.

candydraqxn I actually didn't draw those soldiers, I took em from the screenshot I based the drawing on. I cut out edelgard and stitched the background together. In hindsight it wouldve been really easy to redraw it. just block in the vague shapes and colors, blur it a bit and add a noise overlay or something. I didnt care much about the background though, i was way more focused on drawing edelgard.Switch_FEThreeHouses_E3_screen_11.png

(imgur) Ah how i love you, su-cream pencil... Heres a random headshot of mortimer i drew at like... 2 am? I couldnt sleep so I was slowly drawing while listening to a jabroni mike stream vod. I usually hate drawing slowly (i don't like to do anything slowly) but it was quite relaxing, i even shaded without relying on a multiply layer :) Later in the day i decided to add to it... as for the random words on the canvas, i was listening to the same song over and over and decided to write down some lyrics as a reminder... i guess? I really like the simplified look and its something i think ill try to do more of, as ive always felt like my art is stuck between being too detailed to be as cartoony as i'd like but also somewhat lacking in detail?? not sure if that makes much sense LOL

This random thing i did because of insomnia was pretty groundbreaking for me. normally lineart is very tedious and boring to me so i speed through it with the basic turnip pen and stabilizer set to 100, but for this i scribbled some and erased to control the weight of the lines, kinda like cleaning up a sketch instead of making a completely new lineart layer. it made me realize... maybe lineart DOESNT have to be a slog.... perhaps i can make it a true and important part of my art style instead of rushing through it and having it serve the most basic and boring of purposes....perhaps i can... have fun with lineart?! 0_0

(omg i think i finally figured out how to put images side by side on here....) Some expression practice doodles from different days but I thought i'd post em together. junko doesnt really hide her feelings so i can practice basically any facial expression for her and itll fit her personality well, while some of my other ocs are more stoic so it'd feel "incorrect" of me to practice these kinda faces with them?? (doesnt make sense to me either fhsjfhksd) First one was inspired by this drawing by kficc (warning for bright colors i guess?) and similar expression dump sheets ive seen online

I LOVE the energy she puts into her characters and ive definitely posted about her work on other art related threads LOL.. its so delightful + i cant get enough. the second one i drew while we were going over expressions in illustration class lecture and i felt like messing around instead of paying attention. I love exaggerated and dramatic faces and posing but i have yet to really work at it but im excited to do something like this again but with different ocs this time. I use a lot of references, especially when trying out new things, and for these drawings in particular i looked at work by cameron mark and the stuff shiyoon kim did for spiderverse (i forgot his name and it took me forever to find it again SJHFSF)

(imgur) heres a sorta concept sketch from late march of last year, which means almost 2 years i guess ?? how time flies.. i can just barely remember drawing it. i am absolutely gonna redraw this... but i haven't done much more than do a couple composition thumbnails (ive been pretty unmotivated and busy with school ;__;)

i feel like a big part of wanting to draw this premise is i wanted an excuse to draw fun creepy trees. not sure why i like to draw em like that but i just really like drawing sharp angles... like a lot. although my brain is no longer fried i can't come up with anything else to say about this ;_; so instead here is a little cover art thumbnail i drew a while back that i still find rather charming. im not quite sure when this is from but considering junko's eyes are blue i assume its from 2017 or so?

I didn't update yesterday because I was suuuper busy with an assignment I have due today. Now that it's all said and done I think i'll share some of it for today. Something for my illustration assignment... My class has a weird dnd-like campaign thing going on and i thought it'd be really weird or difficult to get into at first (i dont really care for dnd) but its been surprisingly fun. I think my favorite part of this drawing was erasing to get the sharp shapes of the hair and fur. Definitely a fun time even if i hauled ass yesterday LOL
