Were your OCs ever compared to another character?

108 Votes Yes, they were

I assume that many of us have stumbled upon this, because getting your OC compared to characters from media is inevitable - but what are your thoughts on this, after all? Do you like it? Do you hate it with a burning passion? Or maybe you just don't mind when it happens?

Personally, I am the type who hates it with a burning passion. It's not a positive thing for me at all (I do know that some people don't mean it the wrong way, but it still pisses me off), as I try to make my OCs as original as I can (and will redesign them if I'm not satisfied with their look). I mean, wouldn't you just lose it if your favourite/comfort OC was compared to the same character 40 times (or even more)? Lmao I don't even feel like I'm gonna recover from this haha as a side effect I have developed a burning hatred for that character, to the point where I shudder whenever I see him

Okay, now it's yall's turn, I wanna hear the epic stories and opinions. I don't know if I'm just crazy or is that common lmao

hate with a burning passion as well. 100% not a positive thing for me since its always the most smallest thing or i just dont see what the heck the oc is being compared to

especially if the oc is in a fandom that gets compared to a character in a different fandom

for Lotus she's a hybrid of two alien speices in ben10

she got compared to freaking Celibi from pokemon. the onion fairy one yes.

i was so insulted cuz like- they dont even look the same at all???? besides the slightly blue eyes and color Platte like-

a 2nd one was with my oc's old design for Scythe

ill update this later when find her old design but she got compared to Star butterfly from SVTFOE so many times because of the long blond hair and similar personality, just because of those two things. she was my first ever oc so i felt really bad having to stop using her so yeah i did hate her, but when making some random adopts i came up with her current design that i really love now

I hate it. And it happened many times already to all different kind of ocs I have. And 99% of the time it's about popular media or characters I don't like or don't even know. My characters develop in my brain randomly.  They surely have some elements from something else my brain picked up from games, movies or else but I don't really care for fancharacters overall. I have my own weird world and stuff that isn't related to anything specific.  If that's not the case,  I mention it and in this case I also don't mind it at all. But otherwise it's the most annoying thing and it also puts me down too. I love to create and develop original content.

But a thing I actually don't mind is when someone comes to my page and goes like "omg I have a galaxy dragon like you too" or "our characters have similar makrings, that's kinda cool, I don't see that often".

I only heavily dislike the comparison with Canon characters/popular media OR if someone accuses me of coping their oc because of the way they word it. Like "your oc looks like mine 🤔" kinda thing.

v I literally had that happen to me. Someone asked me to change a character because I used the colors black and white on a feral wolf. No joke. And nope I did not end up changing my oc. (And the same happened with a yellow and blue wolf, probably a good thing that I'm not that much into feral wolves anymore lol)

ah yes. this is one of the things that i'm most paranoid about when i create ocs since well...they're called original characters for a reason.

there was one time where it happened, but i shrugged it off. i was giving drafts of a design for a character in a fantasy world i'm making to my friend, and she told me his outfit looked similar to a canon character in an anime. it was a valid criticism, but it just frustrated me since the last thing i want is to be known as the girl who has an oc that looks like ____ or whatever lol.

what could be even worse is an oc being compared to another oc in a negative light. scratch what i said in the last paragraph, the LAST thing i would want to happen to me is to have someone come up to me and ask 'hey your oc kinda looks like mine...mind changing it?' especially since my oc's designs are usually important to their story, and having to change them might mean redoing their story overall. the thought of that makes me wanna cry ;-;

BDL

I usually wouldn't mind that to be frank, but it really depends on which character, what they're compared to and my mood of the day. chances are if one of them don't aligned, then yes, i will be pissed.

to me, i suppose a small comparison wouldn't hurt - but i'd rather not people repeat the same thing over and over again...

Dia

Oh, it happens to me every now and then! I had a chubby blobfish man OC who was compared to Dennis Nedry from Jurassic Park once
I think most OC creators hate it, and that's understandable.

If you would've asked me 10 years ago if I hated this, then I would have said yes, with a burning passion. But nowadays? Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

First of all, I tend to find the majority of people who compare my OCs to characters from other media aren't doing it to insult me! They're just drawing a comparison to something they already know and trying to start a conversation. 99.9% of the people who do this to me aren't trying to be offensive.

But the biggest reason why this doesn't bother me is because there's nothing unique about my OCs. There are tons of anime pirate girls with long red hair out there. Lots of sinister killer butlers who slash people up with knives at night. Everything "original" that I could possibly do with my OCs has already been done before, in some way or another. And that's the truth: when it comes down to it, nothing is original. Everything has been written about, drawn, or designed before. I kind of grudgingly came to accept that about 9 years ago, and I've never been offended since.

I know I'm gonna be in the minority here, but that's just my experience ᕕ( ᐛ ) ᕗ

I actually like it when people compare my OCs to other characters, even ones I don't know, it's fun seeing what kind of things other people pick up on in designs and what others have taken inspiration from, though I know some people don't like it so I don't go around telling people. I find it pretty useful myself since if a character I've designed looks too similar to another one I can change up their design a little and a lot of my own OCs who I love are based off of characters from other media I like and when people point it out or compare them it just means I've found someone else who loves the same things I do. Plus it's not the end of the world if someone thinks I've ripped off another character from some media I've never seen before

I do find the concern about making the most unique and original character a bit silly, worrying about making your OC the most original creation that's never been done before is a waste of time and effort. A good design can be quantified by things like colour, composition, flow, harmony, shape and semiotics etc., not by how much they don’t resemble a pre-existing design and refusing to use inspiration or design ideas from other things will only limit you in your works. A lot of great designers in every field wear their inspirations on their sleeve and there's nothing wrong with it, some of the best characters are either very similar to others that came before or so simple that they resemble many other characters. I mean, a lot of people love Jojos but pretty much every outfit and pose is something that a fashion illustrator or design has done before but I've never seen anyone who thinks of that as a detriment to the work. I'm a strong believer in the idea that nothing is truly original, we've had thousands of years of human creativity so worry about making a design that suits the role you're using it in, not one that is the most unique or original

happened to me a couple times. idk how to feel about it. sometimes i ask my friends what my character reminds them of. i don’t really like comparisons i didn’t ask for

one time someone said my red demon oc looked like he was from Hazbin Hotel. i responded with this

RayEnigma

copperpeak I can relate to the 2nd one, literally 70-80% comparisons I get are like 'looks like [insert a canon character from hazbin hotel/helluva boss]' or 'looks like they could be a hazbin hotel OC'. I have no idea what the hell is going on with those communities, but even if a person tells me that my style looks like vivziepop's (and they don't mean it wrong), I just can't take this as a compliment because of comparisons that happened in past lmaooo

pain, i suppose

Commodore

One of my OC's got compared to one of my friend's OC's once and to say it ticked me off would be...an understatement.

It's always been a thing that will absolutely at least get under my skin and put me right into a bad mood, because even though I know that inspiration from other media is inevitable and ok to do because nothing is completely original, it still hurts to see one of your characters compared to another instead of being seen as their own, individual entity.

firstrose

I hate it. I think it ruins the creative independence of your individual character. I once had a FERAL CAT CHARACTER that had ram horns get compared to tubbo from the dsmp. Like. No????? What????? It's a fucking cat???????

I think it's an artist to artist thing, but I honestly prefer it when people don't. I feel like the idea in and of itself is harmless, but it's just sucky when you put effort into making something an independent character with meaning behind the different design aspects and someone goes "haha ram horns tubbo dsmp" like?? what??

Oyrso6rsrso66sro6r

I hate it a a lot. It makes my ocs look copied or inspired by stupid characters such as dsmp members. All because they have pink hair or the qualities of rams. That is why I stray from certain qualities for designs or ocs because all im going to hear is "Omg he looks like technoblade!" Or "omg green hoodie? Dream? XD"

Titan Hunter got compared to the Nowhere King from Centaurworld-- on multiple occasions from multiple, different people.

To be honest, when these comparisons happen, it really is off-putting. But mostly because of how its worded. You see, these people didn't once say that my character "looked like" the Nowhere King. To be precise, they asked if it was supposed to be fanart of the Nowhere King. So they didn't even register that it was an original design. And that hurts... a lot.

And hearing it said more than once... well it makes me feel like my work doesn't matter. Like I wasn't unique or original enough, I guess.

But I suppose I'm just overly sensitive to this sort of thing.

centaurworldfan

Lol what your character has like barely any similarities to the Nowhere King?! How??

But yeah I've never had a comparison happen to me but personally I wouldn't be bothered by it
