✒️ Writers' thread ✒️

Posted 6 years, 10 months ago (Edited 6 years, 7 months ago) by castra

I didn't see a thread like this and figured it'd be nice to have some sort of chillout chat for writers! ; v ;

Talk about your current writing projects, your stories, planning, plotting, whatever as long as it's even vaguely writing related!
Anyone who identifies as a writer is more than welcomed; there is no strict definition for the word or anything!

Here are also some questions to start things off:
✒️ Who are you?
✒️ How long have you been writing?
✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?
✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?
✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?
✒️ Any current writing projects?

And some rules, just to make sure this thread will stay nice for everyone!

✒️ Make sure to be polite and nice to each other
✒️ No vagueposting about other users or people in general; let's keep the negativity in vent threads!
✒️ Don't attack / insult other people's interest / favourite genres etc. Discussion is good and disagreements happen, but attacking and insulting are hardly a respectful way of communication.
✒️ Preferably keep things SFW and black out sensitive / upsetting / NSFW-ish content like this

  1. Hello! My name's Dex, I'm 14, nb and a sophomore, and my "sona" is Hari. I'm half Vietnamese and half Irish!! I like Overwatch, my OCs, Doctor Who and... new friends (030)
  2. I've been writing since I was little!!!
  3. Hmm... I can only speak/write in English...
  4. I like writing sci-fi, and semi-realistic things + complicated romance. Sad things are cool!
  5. My current one is called Static Zone.
Caine

I might as well start!

✒️ My name is Caine and I'm a (soon) 22-year-old guy from Finland! I like vintage shoujo and classic literature!!
✒️ I have been writing prose for roughly 4 years, although the first year of those 4 was spent writing nothing but really short flash fiction of my RP characters.
✒️ I really prefer English when it comes to writing, I feel like Finnish is a very awkward and hard-to-handle language even though it's my native language (I'm not a native English speaker)
✒️ I love writing urban fantasy and drama! I also enjoy psychological and LGBT+ fiction, but I can enjoy almost anything really and I enjoy testing and trying new genres. I have a big soft spot for happy gay fiction because I'm an old man tired of gays always suffering or dying or suffering while dying. I also really enjoy wholesome family interactions, mystery, paranormal/eerie and oneshots! I also really like horror elements in my stories but I usually don't really aim to write a horror story per se, because I find it very difficult, haha.
✒️ I HAVE PLENTY of current writing projects, but my biggest one is definitely my VN called Sinfonia! It started out as a weird mix of parody and homage of 70s shoujo manga, especially the ones I personally love and enjoy, but then things got serious pretty quick and it turned into an actually ambitious original project rather than just one joke game. It's about Jonathan who transfers to a new all-male boarding school in mysterious circumstances, and then learns the room he is given belonged to a boy who disappeared only a few weeks back. Initially Jonathan wants no trouble and nothing to do with the disappearance, but soon he finds himself being pulled in the middle of the mystery by his room mate Claude, who is just as mysterious and confusing to Jonathan as the case of the disappeared boy is. Together they start to investigate the case, ending more and more tangled up into the mess of both their own and those of others at the school.

I'm also working on multiple short story collections and a couple of novellas, hoping to get one done during July's camp nanowrimo! I also have a pretty long-lasting and ambitious novel project called The Book of Living and it's about a boy called Oscar who dies in an accident but is brought back to life through necromancy, and then has to find a way to die and separate his soul and body.

@fluidex Hello hello and welcome to the thread!! `v´9
I'm honestly a little jealous of people who started writing when they were small: I did it too, but then I had a huuuge break between like ages 8 and 18, really.
Also that link doesn't seem to work ; A ; /

✒️ Who are you?
I'm max Maxwell, or snarbs! I'm a Student - and probably will be a student forever... - who's right now in their third year of uni, doing computer science and archaeology... Making characters and thinking up stories is my main hobby and a really significant part of my life! It's greatly satisfying and enjoyable in addition to being a really important part of how I externalise the things I internalise about the world and people around me.

✒️ How long have you been writing?
I've been making characters and stories around them for as long as I can remember! It's my dream to one day make a comic... But i have serious mental blocks about actually writing for some reason, even though I wouldnt say I'm bad at it @ _@. I keep putting off starting projects because I wanna be good when I do them, but I cant get good without practice. Then I make little stories to let myself practice stress free, but I plan too much and get attached, then I need to get good to do them justice. Evil loop. But I seriously wanna write even like, side shortstories in my universes to get some practice ahhhh

✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?
English is the only language I'm good enough at, haha!!  I've taken 4 Latin courses though and I can't pretend I wasn't at all motivated by being able to use cool pretentious Latin in my work... (If you ever want Latin translations HIT ME UP)

✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?
I love stories with a focus on atmosphere and character! Interesting plots are always cool, but I love love love anything with strong characters who have interesting relationships, even if it's the most generic plot imaginable haha... I love drama, though, especially when it's drama facing characters who struggle through it together! As opposed to say, miscommunication and heavy interpersonal drama... I love seeing characters team together and either already care a lot about each other, or learn to trust one another in the face of adversity. Also super into speculative science + speculative bio + speculative politics etc! Making things up but then figuring out in a somewhat believably detailed way why they work.

Also thanks to castra for reminding me, def LGBT+ fiction!! it's such a given to me that baiscally all my characters are lgbt+ in some way that i forget to mention it. oops. I'm here to write the cool stories the people deserve where most/all of the characters are lgbt+ but that a) arent about lgbt+ people suffering for it b) don't ignore the fact you can write about LGBT+ stuff without the story being ABOUT that but also wihout ignoring it's still an important point of identity, too...

✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?
Mostly I like modern stuff, or perhaps futuristic (spun off from our world), but I've also done historical fiction! With fantasy themes I really like when they're hidden away - I don't usually have too much fun with 'magic exists but it's a mundane fact of life'? I like... big secrets. My main two story worlds right now are a sci-fi one and a sort of surreal-fantasy one.

✒️ Any current writing projects?
Worlds and HadopelagiaThose two pages explain the stories in a bit more depth.

Worlds is about two kids searching for their missing fathers after meeting a stange entity that sparks in them the memory said fathers exist, and have been missing for almost a year. Most of the characters are physicists, including their fathers, who have been as Quantum Field Theorists studying something called 'cryptophysics'. 'Cryptophysics' is the study of the ways in which space and time can be manipulated and the relation of this to an increasingly apparent series of previously unknown quantum fields, 'cryptophysicalities', and cryptophysical phenomena carry with them a tendency to be extremely hard for human thought to process. In a way they warp normalcy around them - people can see massive, impossible cryptophysical entities and events but their brain won't think anything about it, and they'll just... forget about them uopn turning away. Clearly this is related to our kids forgetting their parents. So as they make headway, they discover their problem is about on an even more pressing level this sort of, existential terror in the face of far-reaching physical forces that exist throughout the universe, and how fickle and unpredictable they can be, and the worry about how cryptophysical activity is changing... ramping up.

Worlds started as me exploring "magic" as a recently discovered thing, entirely considered a subfield of physics and researched as such, with no direct allusions to it being "magic"! It's a bit away from that now perhaps, but it's still evident I think. And Man I swear magic is real anyway!! How do we arbitrarily define things as "magic". Physics is real, fire exists? ou can make fire by smacking rocks together? thats magic

Hadopelagia is alternate history spinning into alternate future! It's about a scenario where the entire world flooded, and some countries colonized under the sea and some stayed on the surface and built massive city-ships. Flooding blocks them off from each other until genetic engineering projects creatre humans with the ability to travel between... but these humans are born into a life of public service and narrowed personal choice. It's not outright dystopic, but it's something that becomes more troublesome a concept the more the underbelly of it is dug into.

The main character is the daughter of an undersea government botanist, who becomes a courier and is allowed+able to travel to the surface! It's a bit of a political/conspiracy drama story. Prospective-Biology/genetic engineering, and fictional politics stuff. Lots of focus on familial and non-romantic character relationships in this one!

✒️ Hello, I'm Finch/Salt, i'm 26 years old and from Denmark. I like Fire Emblem, Pokemon, History and World of Warcraft.
✒️ I've been writing on and off for the last 15 years
✒️ I write in both English and Danish, but mostly English at the moment.
✒️ I like to write intrigue, mystery, fantasy and Sci-fi. My current stories is Occult Detective fiction.
✒️ My current story is named Shadow Men, "Haunted by Shadows, the teenager William Pigeon seeks help from the paranormal society, but after countless failed seances and exorcisms, he turns to Reverend Morang, who takes the youth to wander alleys to look for the Door, where his salvation may be." It's the first book of Noir Investigates, which is a bunch of detectives novels with magic.... But beside that I got a sci-fi story on the back burner, but since I've written myself into a corner(Need to be better at timelines and plots), I'm pretty ambivalent about it, and may simply reboot the whole story.

TheLadyAnatola

✒️ Who are you?

I'm Ana, some 23 year old Lady who loves drowning herself in hundreds of characters and stories for some reason.

✒️ How long have you been writing?

I usually say I attempted my first "big" story when I was in 2nd grade, but I know I was already writing ridiculous 1-page short stories when I was in 1st grade. I could rarely take a simple daily journal prompt seriously. ^^; So I guess I've been at this nonsense for like what, over 15 years or something? My older sister wrote a lot too, so being the big-sister-fangirl I was, I obviously started early. XD

✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?

I'm only fluent in English, so that's all I write in. Sometimes I toss in snippets of German I've learned through middle/high school and into college for my handful of German-speaking characters, but I'm definitely not fluent enough to write entirely in German yet.

✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?

I tend to plan long stories/series, get started, and never finish, or actually finish some short stories that tie into those overarching stories and just pretend I finished the bigger story already. XD They're almost entirely original works, and most of them are fantasy based considering almost all of them take place in the same universe. But I have completely normal characters and stories too without all the magic and the multi-planet settings with all them deities and elements I really ought to write a guidebook for... But aside from all these big projects I leave around to collect dust and remind me of my incompetence, I really like using my characters in just weird short interactions or scenarios. I tend to write a lot of fragmented things and then have to worry about stitching them together because I have a talent for procrastinating on all that exposition.

✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?

I mentioned fantasy, since almost everything I write has some supernatural elements to it. For certain groups of characters I really like writing horror stuff with them, mostly because it's fun to torment them. I mean, it's fun to build up suspense and tension and whatnot... A lot of my longer projects involve adventure and traveling and all that jazz. I don't really aim for any genre in particular though, I just kinda write whatever.

✒️ Any current writing projects?

Too many to count. I'm wonderful at coming up with dozen of stories in my head and having them completely fleshed out and just never finishing them in written form. I suppose technically the projects that are in progress that I try to work on more regularly are a short story which is a rewrite of an origin chapter of two of my favorite characters (because when I first introduced them it was just one intro-chapter and nothing else), a horror story where I throw a different pair of favorite characters into a lovely game of hide and seek with a ghost, and a story that's like a pseudo-Creepypasta that is kinda a dark humor about this person stuck in a weird loop of not knowing if the things he's fighting are monsters or if he's the monster. I don't really have a place I'm comfortable posting these yet aside from Google Docs, but I think a couple of my characters involved in the Creepy prologue I've linked in their profiles, mostly because that's already finished and I have to start the real story aside from this crappy first chapter I have to rewrite.

But I'm rambling as usual. Since I'm sporadic about writing my actual story projects, I tend to get my writing fixes on my character profiles until I can get my butt in gear and be more productive. ^^;

✒️ Who are you?
Hi I'm Aska
✒️ How long have you been writing?
I mean technically like my whole life but for the life of me I can't write longer than 2 sentences.... I'm CHANGING THAT.
✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?
English. I've written a little in Japanese (not counting like. school assignments obv) but I'm hardly confident enough to seriously write anything.
✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?
I really like writing suspense... I'm not good at it, I'm striving to get better but I like writing it.
✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?
Fantasy, horror, paranormal, whatever "bullshit reality warper realm hopping" is... I think it falls under sci-fi but lol, stories that should've ended 20 books ago but havent yet
✒️ Any current writing projects?
Bakemonokaridan - actual writing project
Izayoi - summaries because there's a lot.... too much....
Once it's appropriate I'll upload summaries for my other projects.

✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?

Novels. I can't write short stories. It's just impossible.

✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?

Fantasy and adventure and paranormal

✒️ Any current writing projects?

It's complicated.

✒️ Who are you?

I'm Nate. 26 years old. I work the Dreaded Desk Job but it works well with my anxiety.

✒️ How long have you been writing?

I would say as long as I rememeber. But I'm going to say 12-13 years. I used to fill spiral notebooks with stories in class. Awful stories though but I had fun with them.

✒️ Your preferred languages in writing?

English. It's the only language I speak fluently..sadly.

✒️ What kind of things do you write / enjoy writing?

Aaaa. I like drama lol. It's funny because I've always been one to turn the channel whenever a soap opera came on. But someone once told me my stuff was a little soap operaish. This was years ago but yeah..haha. I also really just enjoy writing about characters. I'm unconfident and overthink my plots so they tend to be loosely formed tbh. Most of my writing are one-shots that focus on character introspection.  I'm really bad at connecting it all together to form a novel. Most of my stuff consists of disjointed scenes that belong to the same project. I am focusing on trying to break out of my comfort zone.

✒️ Favourite genres for your own stories?

I've type casted myself into fantasy because it's one of the "easier" genres for me to write. I'm trying to branch out into science fiction though. An intimidating genre for me because I really like more "hard" sci-fi stories but I know that I'd likely only be capable of soft sci-fi. I'm no astrophysicist lol.

✒️ Any current writing projects?

Yeah I've got two currently. One is for the sci-fi setting and the other the fantasy setting. I'd rather not summarize atm because I'm sure the plots will change haha.

aaa nice to see so many people here!! ; 7 ;
I'm probably gonna throw around more questions for a while to keep the thread moving so here goes:

What kind of site / sites do you use to upload your stories? Alternatively do you have a preferred site for reading user-submitted stories?

I have personally took a liking to wattpad because it actually has an active community, although I find the community itself kind of hard to approach and very... particularly young in general age? I'm an old man I don't know what is hip and cool among the young folks anymore.

I also use tumblr because it lets me customize the theme + I think as a reading experience tumblr is better than wattpad and most of my friends use tumblr instead as they aren't writers / too big in reading online.
