while writing/worldbuilding/drawing/whatever ?

like. you know when your writing and youre like 'hey would it make sense for this character to wear this outfit' but then somehow it ends up with you 6 feet deep in ancient greek fashion and customs . or sometimes its just 'how much and how effective would gasoline be to burn down a whole office building please im not an arsonist im just writing'

yall get what i mean right. righ

ANYWAYS i really like hearing about weird things people have researched for oc/writing stuff, just know that if it's something sensitive, black it out like this or put it under a spoiler tag

both the above are things ive done and lemme tell you. the gasoline thing wouldnt work irl but who cares it looks COOL in the story, or at least thats what i like to think. also i cant draw ancient greek outfits so im still here with one of my characters wearing period-inaccurate clothing

edit: aaaaaand of course i get the ic posting glitch . cant believe ramiel is google searching about arson

I think the ones without context was "Mitochondria" and "Shrimp", "Shrimp variations", "Types of shrimp"

I now have a bunch of shrimp ads that pop up.

There's been lots and lots. Some of the more recent ones I can recall:

  • Mein Kampf free audiobook [note: for a character]
  • 1940s risque pin-up
  • London oldest strip-bar
  • 1940s pornography
  • Vampire bite first aid / What does vampire bite feel like / Can you survive vampire bite
  • An ouija or a ouija
  • Kim Jong Il looking at things
+ lots of real crime stuff out of morbid fascination. (also thank you, this thread, for making me look up if humans can survive in carboniferous! It's giving me ideas regarding a setting of mine.)

Lately I've been googling a lot of deep/dark web stuff part out of morbid interest including what is a deep web red room which I deeply regret searching and part out of plot research.

My sci-fi setting has a digital overlay - think along the lines of the Star Trek holodecks or the market scene in Valeran and the City of the Thousand Planets. Lately I keep thinking about how a deep web like entity might exist in that overlay and how it could be used to throw another spanner in the works as if the ending for year 1 of that plot hasn't fucked things up enough already.

aaawhyme

omg haha I recently had to look up 'medieval dildos/sex toys'

Did you know that they've been in existence for around 30,000 years? who knew? They were made of stone back then. OUCH.

vinnikin

lots of unfortunate anatomical facts of various animals/mythological creatures... and a lot of googling on space and various celestial bodies' ages

Jade-Everstone hope you dont mind the ping, but have you heard of the vo-synth LalaVoice? It's a really interesting older synth, but it can be hard to get the hang of if youre not trained to read sheet music bc it uses musical notation rather than a piano roll :0 but its a cool piece of vo-synth history, i read up on vocalwriter and it reminded me of this
