What kind of character bios you enjoy reading?

Posted 5 years, 7 months ago by Caine

Loosely inspired by the thread on the general board regarding reading bios/profiles, I figured it'd be fun and perhaps even useful to hear what kind of profiles others enjoy reading! Whether it's about the layout, structure or information itself, feel free to share your favourite types here, or even show characters whose bios you personally enjoy a lot (and for what reason). Maybe you enjoy wikipedia-like layouts on profiles because they help you navigate the bio easily, or perhaps you're really into having images scattered around the layout to spice it up a little!

Just remember this is not a thread about bios you DON'T enjoy reading. Keep your negativity elsewhere, and please be respectful of other people's personal tastes. The emphasis of this thread is on the things that you like rather than you dislike, so let's stay mindful and promote the positive ;v;9

Good: I enjoy reading profiles on the shorter side
Bad: I hate reading long bios

Good: I like user X's bios because they're always very in-depth and well written
Bad: I like user X's bios because it's rare to see actually well written characters on this site

I often have hard time concentrating on things myself, so the more compact and simple the layout the better! I love wikipedia-style formatting where I can already sort of expect to see the basic information on either left or right, oftentimes under a character image, and I like it when the information is also consistently arranged (personality, appearance, history etc). I have come to notice the more ADD and/or dyslexia friendly the layout is the more I also enjoy reading them, even though I do adore very busy, colorful and nicely decorated profiles as well - I just find the former easier to read. I also like narrow-ish boxes solely because my screen is very large and my eyes often accidentally jump over lines or words if I have to read from a large area. I also know a lot of people might not necessarily be big fans of smaller fonts, but I do enjoy them when they're still big enough I can read them without squinting.

In general though, I'm super fond of layouts like this one by @watergems and use it myself, as I find it simple and clean enough!

I also really really like it when people add small images to the profiles, like I don't consider it a necessity by any means, but little things (when arranged nicely) really bring more life to the profile and help me focus better. It's especially effective when there is a lot of text so I can use images placed among the text as a "bookmark" of sort to know where I'm reading, and also to make the amount of text look perhaps less like a wall of text? Not that I really mind that either, as I'm guilty as charged of having those haha.

In terms of content I actually love it when people write a lot, especially if it's combined with an easy-to-read layout! If I like a character I naturally want to know more about them, so being able to access that information always feels like a treat ;v; I don't use likes/dislikes function myself because I feel like they'd make my bios a tad too long, but I really like reading those sections, same for trivia.

i honestly like bios that are split up in sections in the way like... u click buttons to look at different things? i think they're CSS specific but i'm not sure

like how if u open a profile they have like an 'intro' section w/ basic info but there's button-tabs that say things like 'relationships' 'history' ect... i like these ones bc everything is separated in a way that makes it easy to read and less daunting to look at compared to a profile that has all that info on the same page (like how mine are lmao)

hedgemaze has a good example of the kinds of profiles i'm trying to explain haha, i'm not sure if i'm making much sense 😅

I like reading bios related to stories im working on. Currently, I'm working on a vampire comic so I look at other vampire characters and other characters in vampire universes. I'm not really interested in characters with mental illness or disabilities or such because I rarely see anything interesting from those types of characters. I don't mind gay characters, but not if their story is all about being gay. I like regular people without too much heavy backstory or angst (they can have a sad past, but id prefer they didn't brood on it too much). Right now I really want some urban fantasy universe characters.

glad ppl like the sidebar layout lol
i do like all these fancy layouts with custom colours and tabs and such, but i personally rlly like ones that use bootstrap/match the rest of the site and ones that are easy to navigate/read with labelled sections and lists.. but i spend so much time tweaking layouts to use that i don't have like any info for any characters .... F
i rlly rlly like xamag's profiles for their VE fantrolls (like Rypite Koldan!!!) its throughout but not overly wordy, and tbh i do like my  Gem Wikia layout bc i think it matches the SU wiki well, hits all the bootstrap/thematic points i mentioned above, anchor links work, the toc is collapsible.. its just Nice

I think prefer... medium-length bios?? Short bios usually don't really satisfy me (I want to know more!!), but on the other hand super-long-bios are more likely to bore me or make me lose my attention (especially since I'm not a native English speaker) so rip,, Or, if a character has a long bio, I like when there's a "TL;DR" section at the beginning, so I can grasp the basic concept behind the OC before starting!

I also really like wiki style bios since the layout feels familial and practical to me! Page decorations such as aesthetic pics or character art also makes the bio more pleasing for me to write! I'm not a fan of bios with tabs though, I like to see the total amount of written content without having to click several times. Layouts with integrated tabs are fine, but if you use actual character tabs for different sections, there're big chances that I won't read it (unless it's AUs or something), I'm sorry ;v; Layouts with narrow boxes are cool to me, unless there's a lot of written content and thus a lot of scrolling to do in these tiny boxes haha

For some reason, I never read (and thus never write) physical descriptions. The character gallery is usually enough for me, so I tend to skip this section completely, ha-

But usually yeah if the character caught my attention in some way there's big chances I'll read their entire bio no matter the layout ;v;

Short, sweet, to the point- in content and layout. Pale templates with bursts of color and simple layouts are my jam. For serious characters, some personality and story but not enough to spell it all out or quell intrigue. Mystery in the future rather than the past, but I can approve of both. I like for them to read like an introductory character blurb in a game or web comic. I prefer paragraphs over modules and bonus points if large swaths of text are broken up with images. For non-serious or mascot characters, random facts or likes/dislikes that give a sense of the character is fun. Doodles, design ideas, and silly pictures on both types warm me up to a character.

Now take everything I said and throw it out the window for a D&D or game themed characters (or any characters treated in that manner). I wanna know all the stats, all the mechanics, the party, average damage, the history, all the character predispositions, etc. I want the layout to evoke the world, even if it's like 80s action adventure game cheesy. Hell, the cheesier the better!

I enjoy reading short to medium length bios that are straight to the point and well sectioned (either with the use of clear and concise CSS or by using headers or some kind of indication that tells me what is it I'm about to be reading.)

I'm not opposed to reading long paragraphs, but ones that comes with a summary. I want to know what I'm getting into before I delve into anything; that's just my style. I often get intimidated if I stumble upon a bio with a smack-dab long paragraphs for the bio without any prelude or intro or tidbits on the character beforehand. I guess I like keeping things short, simple, and concise, and something like a "tldr" where people can get away with reading the summarized points, and read through the longer paragraphs if what they saw interests them enough to want to invest their time to read more!

I loooove bios with toggles (tabs and pills). It feels nice to look at and easy to navigate and it gives me the illusion to fit a ton in a small space. I rather would scroll though a small box than a whole page tbh (even more so since the majority of my time here is on mobile device with desktop view lolol) ;; Content wise I like having the basic info visible first / on top because to me it gives a good easy drawing ref minimum and it's cool to know about their birthdays and heights and stuff lol. Then later on in the paragraphs it can go more in depth about their looks and personality, etc. I also like looking at random character facts and seeing the relationships the character has. For backstories or current stories I tend to skim through those but if something catches my interest then I'd read through it slower.

((Also if I like a characters design it makes me more likely to read their bios if they have one lol))

I really care about my own characters profiles, but I also spend a lot of time looking at other peoples - both mutuals and random folks. I'm working on revamping a few of my mains so I've spent a ton of time looking at others profiles and formatting - more than I usually do even.

It was said a bit above but I really really enjoy when characters have general info sectioned off - sidebars are GREAT - and when there is a quick summary of the character at the start. I honestly am less inclined to delve into a very lengthy profile if the character info is just huge textblocks to start (that doesn't mean I won't read stuff if my attention is peaked, but I need the basics before I know if I want to spend a ton of time on the character) but giving me a tl;dr with the character is a good way to peak my interest and then I'll jump into those big paragraphs.
Sectioning stuff off is great but so is quick blurbs before getting intensely into stuff. I really like tabs for this reason BUT I tend to be somewhat not inclined to click certain types of tabs unless I'm very interested and usually after I've read summary/etc. and found myself invested in the character - i.e. relationships and that type of thing. I especially love D&D/Tabletop characters with a ton of info (since I mean I'm biased that is what a couple of my mains are that I spend a lot of time on). Break things up with images specific to the character and it's golden for me.

I prefer the text itself to be very clean and less messed around with.
I also very much like bios which have more info - seeing not only likes/dislikes and basic personality traits but to get a general idea of the characters backstory as well. I very much enjoy characters that I can get a general picture from the bio - I want to get more than I would just from looking at the gallery/design I guess.
