Heyoo!!

Inspired by this thread here + a general curiosity and love of brush hoarding, I thought it would be fun to make a thread for sharing brush settings for whatever program you're currently using!

Here are some rules to keep things clear:

(updated 5/14/2021; Paid for resources are now allowed!)

  • It has to be a CUSTOM brush - not any brush that comes with the program, unedited. This means the basic round brush for Photoshop, doesn't count - in the same way the basic Pen brush for SAI doesn't count!
  • Please state in the post what program the brush setting is for!
  • It does not have to be made by you - but if sources are available please do credit the person who made it/them! This includes extra textures if applicable, again, if possible.
  • This is mainly for Clip Studio : If a brush NEEDS the EX version / a special version to work, you are welcome to share but please state that it does!
  • Please DO show an example of the brush in the post! Even just a lil doodle or squiggly lines is totally fine - just give someone what to expect with the brush!

That being said, these are the programs I have in mind (but any recommendations or ones not on the list are fine too! Points link through to the programs page):

Some of the above I'm not 100% sure they support custom brushes, so--whoops?

If you have any questions feel free to ask here or PM me as well! I'll be sharing some of my SAI 2 brushes below as an example 👍

:0 Ooh!! I have some free brushes I'd luv 2 share! I'm a procreate user (: None of these are made by me

Since procreate doesn't have anti-aliasing, if you want those hard pixel edges try these out!

Pixel Brush Set (has individual brushes for different sizes)

I use it for all my homestuck style art, here's what they look like in use:

6-E2-FFCA8-7-A02-4-BBE-A9-DD-27714-E206-

It's kinda wonky to deal with for making actual pixel art but if ur stubborn like me its not bad lol.

Kadiri's Set!!! This is a fantastic set for beginners if ur not sure where to start, or if u want a great little set of painterly brushes.

MattyB's Hatching Brushes <3 There is a tonnn in here & they are lovely for texture & illustrative work. MattyB also has other great free sets for foliage & Wet media that I love.

I don't have a custom brush to show off atm but I do have a bit to say about custom brushes in Medibang/FireAlpaca in general!

I use Medibang and not FireAlpaca but the two are similar in many ways so tips about one program may apply to the other.

I haven't done it myself, but you can import Photoshop brushes into Medibang! They don't use the same file types for brush textures but if you convert a Photoshop brush into the type that Medibang uses, you can use it in Medibang. Photoshop uses .abr files while Medibang just uses transparent .png images, but there are .abr file converters out there. You should probably be a bit careful when you download them, though, just in case.

Medibang has a cloud library of user-created (so technically custom?) brushes that you can download through a button in the brush window. You need a Medibang account for this, but that's pretty easy to do and you don't need to do anything else with that account. You can also make your own custom brushes directly through the program, using just a regular new canvas. They should have guides for doing that on the official site.

That's really cool! :Oc I didn't know that about medibang, I haven't used it in so long 😂 I think back when I first started using programs I tried it out but couldn't figure out how to make custom brushes, so I ended up going w/ SAI. Thanks for the cool advice!!

These have been making the rounds on twitter so I thought I'd share them here too!

The brushes look like this in use for me however other people will have different results since it's based entirely off of pen pressure :Oc Definitely recommend at least testing them out bc a lot of people swear by them and while they don't work perfectly for me, they're still fun to use!

Been going through some clip studio brushes so expect a couple posts in rapid succession lmao

First up is this brush!! It's called Wiggly Brush by bagelwhalee

It works really well for doodling, imo??? You can turn the pen pressure on if you want and play around with it, but I like it at it's base pen pressure setting with very little variation. I haven't tested it out for coloring but I'm sure it'd be fun to use for that, too :3

This is what I ended up doodling with it! It felt really natural and relaxing, I found myself slowing down a little while drawing which is something I rarely do lol.
