I'm really new to digital art AND coloring, as I usually just do traditional art, and even then mainly pencil. I was hoping for a few tips on this one of my bby Lillian? Did I do any noticeable beginner mistakes, or is this decent enough for commissions? I had no idea how to color eyes which just led to me giving her cute cartoon eyes, which I really like, but had not intended. Cus this only my third attempt with medibang and I'm vry vry new to the program. I'm sorta proud of it, but very open to helpful tips. :>

(The poll messed up a little, but I don't remember how to fix it. Oops.)

Could I maybe get some critique on this, please? I'd like to know how to improve.

Hello ! I think she's really cute, and I like the print you used for her shirt !

I'm gonna break my critique down into sections :>

1. Anatomy

I think your facial anatomy is good, but her shoulders are kind of a little too round, so I'd suggest making them taper down more suddenly,, idk if that makes sense. Also, it looks like her arms are a little too short for her, they should be a bit longer. I try to fix my short arms by drawing the arms in chunks seperated by an elbow joint. I don't really know you're drawing process, but if you draw the clothes straight out instead of sketching out the figure first, it can make it much more difficult to make anatomy look right.

2. Clothes

I like the print you chose on her dress, its good to choose a pattern to generate interest :> however, there is something I've noticed with it :

The roses on the sleeves match up with the dress under it, and that is something that should be avoided since it breaks the illusion that the pattern is 3 dimensional. I would probably rectify this by selecting the sleeves seperately and putting the pattern on them maybe rotated or something? I dont work with a lot of patterns, so I dont have a lot of experience there,,, it was just a minor thing I noticed.

One way to make your clothing look more interesting is to add folds in them. Generally you get pretty strong folds when you bend your elbow, so that's something I would add. Clothing folds are rather difficult to get a hold of, so when drawing them, always consider what gravity is doing to the fabric.

3. Coloring /shading

The first thing I want to begin with is the mouth. I think her mouth is supposed to be open? If so, a differientiation of color between her mouth and skin would be good to help discern the difference.

With your shading, it's good to keep it consistent. If you shade her skin/face, the dress should be shaded too to keep the piece cohesive.

With your shading, I think it's a little too light? It kind of looks like you used the airbrush, which is fine, but it generally produces a look that is blurry and rather undefined, so I would suggest to use a harder brush to shade with. Also, don't be afraid to use darker values ! Contrast is extremely valuable in artwork.

A tip on shading hair is to shade in the direction in which the hair flows, and also highlighting it would be good as well : )

Your color picking with her design is really nice ! I love how the brown in her hair is complementary to her dress and hair tie. Good work on that :>

Im sorry about writing so much,,, im sorry if I was too harsh ! Also, if there are any typos, I was writing on my phone JXKGOEKF

hey there!

first thing first, I think you should work on anatomy.

here's some useful programs that help me learn pose placement and also anatomy http://www.handyarttool.com/

try figure drawing: https://www.artistsnetwork.com/art-mediums/drawing/3-figure-drawing-mistakes/

(practice drawing a bean. like a little curved bean shape. this eventually emulates the main body of a human beaning :D )

this artist provides the best tutorials i've found for drawing all sorts of things pertaining to the human anatomy and different ways to draw them and practice

highly recommend checking out all his other tutorials too.

im gonna dump some drawing tutorials here- step by steps etc.:

perhaps you'll find them useful

this guy is a master of art. he seriously inspires me to get better every time i watch his videos. you can just sit there and watch, and get inspired. inspiration all of his videos are amazing

and secondly, consider how heavy or how lightly you are drawing your lines. It seems to be the same size all the way through the drawing and this can make it look a little flat

Try having thinner and darker lines, to depict weight of the character/objects.

Thicker darker lines where the folds of clothing/skin are the heaviest. Thinner lines where there's less weight, like the tops of the shoulders and clothing etc. Places where the bones are more prominent under the skin. etc.

This is probably something you should focus on AFTER you've worked on practicing anatomy, but there's no harm in being aware of it now anyway!

anyway hope i could be of some help! :)

In my opinion, how hair is drawn can make or break a piece of art. Generally, you should take into account how the hair falls in a 3D space. Here are some tutorials that explain way better than I ever could.

here's a simple one!
