Artist pet peeves master thread

Posted 4 years, 2 months ago (Edited 3 years, 3 months ago) by Petalofdreams

Hello friends!

I thought it'd be fun to create a thread so people can share stories  of their artist pet peeves. What do you hate about the community? what  do you hate about some people in the community? Is there something you absolutely hate but was never really able to say it out loud? Your chance is now!

Personally i really dislike it when people gatekeep stuff. Art is for  everyone and should be for everyone. If you want to draw something then  go for it unless it's outright hateful.  You don't have to have amazing  skills to do art. You don't have to be a certain way. You're an artist  alright? alright.

2021 edit: Thank you all for being respectful of each other! Its great seeing the differentiation of opinions and have an open minded discussion about it. Thats what i wanted. So thank you!

So , recently I noticed how many people who just start drawing straight up switch to commissions, then complain that nobody buys their art.

Let your art develop and improve first please..  nobody is an epic artist and very consistent when they just start out.

"Art style theft" is a big one for me

Honestly I'm tired of seeing artists being harassed, mocked, etc just for drawing things similar to another artist. You cannot own an art style. Unless someone is tracing your work or deliberately copying your ideas, you have no right to get angry at them just for having a similar style. It's petty and comes off as not wanting the spotlight taken away

Like just let people draw and have fun. If they like "your" style to the point of taking elements from it, take it as a compliment. People will develop their own techniques as they learn and mimic others, that's just a natural part of growing as an artist. Everyone's style is just an amalgamation of inspirations anyways

I hate it when artists take "artistic freedom" with commissions and your character ends up looking different to their design. Or they add / remove things.

theres A lot but my main pet peeves are probably people starting up drama for absolutely nothing, and people selling clothes or Color pallets, especially gatcha life clothes selling.

i seriously do not understand why people buy/sell Color pallets. it could be to make your own character, but like 99% of the time the person selling those pallets just go to Color pallet websites and find whichever Color they like and sell them. Just go to a Color pallet website and find one yourself instead of wasting 5$ on a 5 color choice Color pallet.

for the drama thing, tbh I feel like the art community has to be the biggest comunity to start drama ever. It’s EVERYWHERE, and it’s almost always about stupid things like “art style theft” or a character that looks 5% similar to another person’s character. It’s especially bad on DA and it just makes me sad to see call outs and unnecessary drama status posts every 5 minutes.

oh and another one is closed species, I don’t mean all of the them, but I mean specifically the ones that either restrict you on SO many things with paywall or just straight up boundaries or they ignore the group entirely for no reason and stop communication entirely. This has happened to me so many times and because of this I’ve limited myself a lot from how many closed species I make because most of those closed species end up being trashed by the creators

its weirdly specific but tutorials that follow a ridiculous amount of steps with filters, layer effects, etc for a simple outcome. mostly this is among photoshop users (which reinforces my humble opinion that having too many tools to choose from can be a bad thing tbh). an example would be one i saw a long while back but still think of, which was a lengthy process involving multiple submenus to make a tear/water droplet on skin. you could get the exact same effect with 30 seconds, a soft brush, and the lasso tool. like .... have a rube goldberg way of drawing if you want, but when it comes to teaching others, needlessly complicated instructions arent helpful.

and +1 to @loupiglaa because krita!!

The mentality that beginner's level art isn't worth something or is cringey. No matter what you may think of said art, the artist put time, effort, and love into it. Everyone starts somewhere and takes their own time to develop and grow. Making fun of people isn't going to help anyone.

Changing character's skin colors. Especially darker skinned characters. Please stop making my characters lighter than they are! Lighting's one thing, completely different shades are another! (Kinda goes for just characters in general too, and any which way.)

Nifffi

It's just something reallly minor but whenever someone spells "cell shading" (correct is cel shading, it's named after animation cels).

Hmm, I think the main thing for me is when I click on a profile/character gallery and I get a looong warning for "DO NOT STEAL".

It's common sense to not steal?? Those warnings are supoosed to be used for ACTUAL warnings/triggers, not "do not color drop a single shade off of my character or I will block you :)". It's an inconvenience and people are DEF using the warning system wrong. Warn me about gore instead of telling me to not steal your art

Petalofdreams

Nifffi That's something i didn't know actually. I thought they were one and the same. Thank you for clearing that up! :o

same :'0 tbh I've never seen someone using "cel" instead of "cell" before actually. So I guess everyone is doing it wrong. Lol

ZuupMummy

I cannot stand when someone says that their art is so bad and how "they're never going to be good at drawing." I've had that happen with a couple of friends, and it's annoying. Stop trying to compare your art to someone else's.

People who try to "compliment" you by saying stuff like "omg your art is so good youre so talented! i wish i could draw like you haha! i cant even draw a circle!!" Being self deprecating isn't a compliment and i'm not "talented." i genuinely believe anyone can draw as long as theyre willing to put in the time and effort to learn. I've been drawing for many years to get to this level 😭😭😭  so it kinda saddens me that people think youre somehow born with artistic skill and dont seem to notice or care about the time and practice one puts in
