The appeal of RP?

Posted 1 year, 8 months ago by Mori Yajū vistrym

I’ve been in the online art community since I have as a kid. Although I must ask what the appeal of roleplaying is? I never could wrap my head around being in character. What’s it like? Is it awkward? How do you come up with stuff in the spot? Etc.

Also is it even possible to ‘spectate’ the story go down?

alexd that is really neat :0 also by spectating I mean do other people watch the RP go down or is it kept mostly between you and the other person. Also on that note do people usually publish it or nah?

I RP mostly in large groups, so my experience isn't very 1-on-1- I RP because I find it fun! I like RP groups because I'm not always in control, I can't go back and bend the past to make the 'perfect' outcome and therefore need to adapt. It allows for me to grow a character in a way I don't expect! (E.g. My character Hawthornlight being forced to take control of a group because she was selected and had to think fast. It wasn't something I planned for her to do or even totally expected, it's just how I had her personality adapt to stress!)

I have trouble writing stories entirely on my own, I can think of a beginning and end but no middle. I find RP easier because others can help, they can be part of that middle that I cannot figure out!

I don't find it awkward to RP a character entirely different from me, I actually find it freeing. The only trouble I have is mean characters as I never want to hurt the player behind the characters and have to make sure I don't go too far, even if it would be IC I never want it to hurt another actual person. Outside of that I tend to love it as it lets me explore new things.

I also find it similar to.. writing a character in a solo story that is different from me. A lot of my characters are nothing like me, RP or not!

Coming up with stuff on the spot is mostly trying to figure out reactions and how it can push things forward, a passive character is often pulling a plot in a different direction than an active one. Some RPs I have will have determined results but the how to get there is less solid, it depends on how you play! I know some people have every step planned out too, you just gotta find a RP partner or group that meshes with your ideal way of play.

RP I do are public in a massive 50+ person server, so I suppose they're 'published' there since everyone can read it but rarely otherwise. They probably wouldn't make sense to someone outside the server, so I just don't bother. It will again depend on the person and what the goal is, nothing wrong with posting something you're proud of with a RP- with the permission of your participants!

well to me, the appeal is in communal storytelling. i consider myself a pretty creative person, but i make my best work when i have someone to bounce ideas off of. when you make a story together with someone who is also invested in your characters, it's easier (for me) to connect more to the characters! it's this shared enthusiasm that makes it the best for me, and roleplaying is the most convenient and most common way to do that.

also, the degree of "improv" i use varies. often i will take my rp partner to the side like, how should we resolve this? what is a reasonable time-skip here? should we roll some dice to see the outcome? and this is fine and normal! if you see it more as writing together, rather than putting up a theatrical production... it becomes a little easier.

For me, I've always enjoyed roleplay in that it's fun to essentially write a collaborative project with someone (speaking as a literate roleplayer) but never have to share it and have the pressure of putting it out there - I really enjoy seeing their ideas and what they can contribute to it, and it never fails to spark enjoyment when you really click with a roleplay partner, their style and their ideas.

It's also fun in that I tend to have a lot of plot ideas floating around in my head that I'd love to write but couldn't be bothered to fully do on my own. And sometimes, others add to those ideas in ways I never would have thought of myself!

I struggle to roleplay, but I definitely get the appeal! It's moreso when I've partaken, about distancing yourself from the reality around you that you deal with daily, and simply imagining and picturing yourself as somewhere else, as someone else, and really engaging in a form of "make believe" for many people, and therapeutic, as well as just fun and enjoyable story telling if you don't wanna go too deep with it.

I kinda imagine it like a DnD game without the battling and quest, unless that's your kinda RP!

I love roleplaying because I love writing. RP allows me to write but not have to do all the work, and it is more exciting that I don't always know what's going to happen next.

Also I tend to really get inside my character's heads which helps be develop them more.

I love to RP when I get the chance. I do need to reply to some soon actually.

For me, it really helps flesh out my characters. I love writing dialogue the most, so much fun to just act as a different character and even see how interaction with other OCs turn out. RPing is such a stress reliever. It's just fun finding a partner and just seeing how it all turns out.
