how do you organize your characters?

i need ideas and help for how to go about my own

I personally arrange mine by groups I mentally put them in, but here's some examples of different ways to arrange characters.

If you peddle characters, you can arrange characters you have up for sale/trade/adoption in a separate folder from your personal characters, but if you don't, then... yeah.
You could additionally separate characters you designed, from characters you purchased.
If a group of characters is all one species, put them in a folder together. You can be broader with this and lump all the canids into one folder.
If your characters have a bigger picture, (a story, or fandom) put them together in a folder for that group.
If you have a lot of characters and a lot of incomplete/empty profiles, you can arrange them in folders for personal use of what needs to be worked on. You can even alter the folder's privacy.
It never hurts to have folders within folders, like a species folder in a story/fandom folder.

Honestly, I don't have a system at all atm lol but I'm planning on making a folder for; adoptables, mains, and other. I won't have that many characters so I won't need too many folders

There was a similar thread a while back, maybe it will also be helpful!

i dont really have any set system to it tbh, i dont make/have any closed species and all my ocs fit into the same universe, so i guess im lucky in that aspect. I think it depends on what you're doing with your ocs, or what your story/universe is like, tbh. i personally like to sort by stuff like.... friend groups, otherwise connected groups, locations, species... you name it. maybe figuring out what character has what in common with the others (such as a particular aspect in the story, or a location, for example) can help you decide how to sort.
think of it like this, if your ocs were all sorted in a range of drawers, under what label would you look for to find a certain oc? what type of labels make it the easiest to find your oc?

maybe im not being very helpful HAHA but thats how i did it.

I have my sonas, secondary, ARPG characters (with a closed species subsection), characters for sale, and characters that still need a story

I'm kinda very loose with my sorting, tending to make folders for the fandom they're in, or for my original stuff I sort them into the world they're in, sometimes the sub sections if there's a large amount of ocs up that go in that one city or area so I can keep them sorted together? As long as theyre in the world they belong to then I don't...worry too much.

I separate them by character type. For example, humans in one folder and mythical creatures (ie fairies, elves, etc) in another.

Tags are useful for organization too, especially for characters that could fit into more than one folder.

I have a folder for closed species, one for a fandom I was deep in for a while and thus needs an isolation chamber (if I make more fan characters that'll probably be made into a subfolder of, like, "fandom characters"), one for my story characters, and one for characters I'm selling. Mostly I use tags to organize outside of that, though.

I have folders arranged by setting or purpose. I have folders for most my stories, folders for the fandom my fanchars belong to and then a folder for wips & personal use like just slice of life drawings, sonas, purely aesthetic ocs etc. Then I have tags for other things I want to arrange like humanoids and anthros, themes, art wanted, gift, etc
