Favourite Bugs?

Posted 6 years, 5 months ago (Edited 6 years, 5 months ago) by Mothman

As someone with a huge interest in entomology (and a desire to pursue it as a career), I often find myself thinking about bugs a lot...

Lately I've been thinking a lot about weevils! They're cute lil' guys with long heads, and they're a very diverse family too.

Anyways...I've come over here to the forums to ask if anybody's got any neat bugs they like and wanna share! I just love how diverse these animals are...

(If you're the type of person to go "EW I HATE ALL BUGS I HOPE THEY DIE" then....please just don't bother ;v; This is a Cool Bug Appreciation Thread! Same can be said for those afraid of bugs! I advise not looking at this thread as what you might see might make you uncomfortable.)

I also like Dalceridae a lot (also known as Jewel Caterpillars) because they look so beautiful as larvae!

...then they get super fuzzy as adults:

OOOOOOOOOOOOO I HAVE A LOT OF FAVORITES

some of my faves:

- Idolomantis diabolica, Hymenopus coronatus, all mantids

- rhinoceros beetles!! big strong boys

- I love all pill bugs. especially because their exoskeleton is actually a layered nanoscale composite capable of withstanding immense force. this composite is actually significantly more advanced than most modern day human engineered materials!! I do realize they are in fact isopods and not insects but

- speaking of pill bugs --  even though they're technically millipedes and not really pill bugs I love Madagascar emerald pill millipedes! their colors are so beautiful

- millipedes in general

- aphids are a new favorite simply due to their bizarre and convoluted reproductive habits

- spiders aren't insects I know I know but. jumping spiders

@Synapticrelay

I LOVE MANTIDS A LOT I always find them kinda funny bc they're actually very closely related to roaches...It's funny how far adaptations can take u....

also look at this tiny guy:

pill millipedes are beautiful! millipedes in general are good I love watching all their legs move...I like these ones a lot b/c of the orange!

I'm not too big on bugs and insects and whatnot (I like them but I often don't pay much attention to them) but I really like centipedes! I don't know how it started really but there is just something delightful in the fact they have a lot of legs and they're wiggly predators. Snout beetles are somehow really charming too.....

Orchid mantises are absolutely gorgeous and I want to make an OC with a colour scheme like that one day aaaa

this dorky lil guy (phylliidae) is my absolute sunshine, they wiggle around to look like theyre leaves blowing in the wind
(just look at this lil bugger do the cha cha)

BEETLES ARE SO AMAZING!! THEY'RE BADASS, YET ADORABLE AND I WANT TO BUILD A LIL HOME FOR THEM

most of my ocs love beetles and some ocs like Mircalla even made a home for them... which i couldnt oTL

im just scared to hold them because i might squish one on accident again ahahahhdkf

BUT WHOA YOU'RE AN ENTOMOLOGIST?? i would like to know more beetle trivia hehe

(subbing to this thread because the insects here are cute, too hehe)

AH I LOOOVE ORCHID MANTISES! Mantids come in a wide variety of pretty species and orchid ones are arguably one of the prettiest....I'd def check out the devil's flower mantis too!

I was actually pretty surprised that a pokemon was made based off of an orchid mantis since they're a pretty niche bug...u have good taste.

(CENTIPEDES ARE A LOT OF FUN. have you seen house centipedes? they're scary to find indoors but apparently they take care of other pest bugs. Extra wiggly looking with those long legs...)

Caine

Mothman WHAT  A GORGEOUS MANTIS and yeah I agree, mantises come in so many shapes and sizes and somehow they all are gorgeous or at least super interesting if nothing else?

And yeah I have !! I prefer the more "classic" one with dark body shorter legs but all centipedes.... are darlings.... ;_;

OH THOSE GUYS ARE GREAT phasmatodea is a very fun order esp. since it groups leaf insects and stick insects all together as Closely Related (really skinny bugs VS really wide flat bugs....)

I LOVE SEEING THEM WIGGLE I haven't seen one in a long time but a lab I'd visit a lot tends to have some of these guys:

Not quite the same, but they jiggle when hanging out on leaves as well! and so do stickbugs...this order is full of bugs with Smooth Moves

@Wanco-Alien

I'm not an entomologist! I just wish to become one once I've completed my studies B^) I'm currently a biology student!

I'm so happy you love beetles though!! beetles are one of my favourite orders as well. 25% of animal diversity on earth is all covered by various beetle species. Not all insects, just beetles alone. THERE'S JUST SO MANY!

a cool beetle I like a lot is the Namib Desert Beetle. Since they live in a very dry desert, they've taken to a very specific adaptation to get hydrated.

In the morning, they climb up to the highest peaks of sand dunes and stand with their heads down and their butts hoisted in the air, with their backs to the morning wind. Eventually, water condenses on the backs of their abdomens and rolls down towards their head/mouth and they drink the condensed water droplets...

here's one standing with water droplets hanging off of it:

Beetles are VERY good insects and I can go on about them for ages....
