Your favorite Underrated Video Games

Posted 5 years, 3 months ago (Edited 5 years, 3 months ago) by ParadiseLost

What I mean by "underrated video game" is, a video game which is uncommonly known/talked about but that you like a lot.

For example, I really like Azure Striker Gunvolt (and its sequel), but I always find myself having to explain it because it's so uncommonly heard of. The songs are great, the characters are cool. (Especially Teseo. He's easily the most annoying, not th emost difficult, but most annoying, boss, and the game treats him as such. Which is great. I mean, the guy TALKS IN MEMESPEAK.)

This can also extend to fandoms.

Here's just a thread for you (and I) to share and maybe talk about these things I guess.

There are just two rules:

1. Please don't argue, especially not over how uncommonly known something is. I used to think that Warrior Cats was not something commonly talked about. Then I met DeviantArt. Point is, what are things that YOU think are underrated, not things that factually are underrated, because the definition of "underrated" connotates an emotional OPINION. Opinions, contrary to popular belief, are not facts and can be changed, with varying levels of difficulty.

2. Black out sensitive material and unsavory behavior, please. You can do this by setting the highlight and the text color to the same value. Yes, you must change both.

good thread!! for me it's xenoblade chronicles, no contest. i finally finished it in mid 2018 and my first thought after finishing it was just god, i wish i could go back and play this game again without knowing a single thing. it's a fun game to play, has a unique and gorgeous world to explore, and the story ... my god, the story ...

when i heard it was getting a 3ds port (years back, now) it was ... so freaking exciting. in my experience though the sequel game (xenoblade chronicles 2), gets talked about and played much more often -- which makes sense! its newer and has much crisper graphics. i love xb2, but theres just ... Something about the original xenoblade puts it on an entirely different level about its sequel. god. i love that game.

Kingfauna

the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games!! so not the overly popular persona spinoffs because we know those got a dang lotta love

naw i'm talkin' persona's parent series. and then the other SMT spinoffs that ended up getting less love like digital devil saga, devil summoner, devil survivor... But especially the mainline SMT games!

also a big shoutout to the Zero Escape series. 999, Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma were so short lived and so underloved it's a shame because they're great titles

Stormeko

Megaman Starforce! I loved the games and Pat is one of my fav characters of all time!

Also agreed with Kingfauna ! Zero Escape was amazing! <3

Also Virtual Villagers!

AlleycatIrony

my fave underrated video game is dog's life

it's like... a game everyone i've talked to IRL has played but no-one ever talks abt it? no-one remembers it exists? i played it so much as a kid that i more or less burnt out the disk and my dad always goes on abt how much i loved that game even now

hell, i STILL play it - as soon as i realised 'oh shit i can buy games on ebay??' i bought it again (after i got a new ps2 ofc)

like... what's better than what's more or less a dog simulator w/ a few questionable themes that definitely would not get it a G rating in this day and age? nothing!
plus the graphics are iconic

I have like... 3 I want to talk about OTL. First, Cheritz's other games besides Mystic Messenger, Dandelion and Nameless. I think they're just as good as MysMe, even better actually imo, and the only reason I think they're not as popular is because they're pay-to-play on Steam. I'm glad Cheritz is getting attention now, but I wish more people would go and try their old games because Nameless is consistently up there in my favorite otome games :'D

Also Fate/Extra CCC! It was never released in America, which is really unfortunate, but someone on YouTube is playing Gilgamesh's route and using english subs from someone who translated it so I definitely recommend at least watching it, if playing it is not an option! It made me like Fate way more than I did before I watched the game, and also made me like Gilgamesh wayyyyyy more since I only knew him from Zero and Stay Night previously. also made me ship Hakuno x Gilgamesh but that's neither here nor there

And lastly, idk if it's really underrated? but Dragon Age Origins. I think Inquisition is way more popular since it's the newest game but damn, Origins is one of my all-time favorite games. The world is so immersive and I loved the entire cast of companions - not to mention it gives much more freedom with the player character than the other two games in the series - you can literally pick one of six origin stories to play to start the game (and my favorite is definitely Dwarf Noble/Aeducan) and that's just the start!

SQUARE ENIX MADE THIS PUZZLE GAME ITS LITERALLY SO MUCH FUN PLEASE PLAY THIS

AgentM-Chan

.hack, G.U. specifically, I ducking love it that and disgaea are two of my fave series

Kingfauna

i guess im also going to toss persona 1 and both persona 2s especially into the ring just because they got severely overshadowed by 3-5, to the point of atlus pretty much pretending they dont exist 😂

maybe someday we'll miraculously be proven wrong and they'll do a remake or a spinoff but for now they could use more love 8'[

Vector

Seconding the Disgaea games.

Waltz

-breathes down everyone's throats-

PLAY.... LEGEND OF MANA.....

...Really though, it has a lot of flaws in terms of its gameplay, but in terms of visuals and story it's a fantasy masterpiece that I highly recommend to everyone. Hey! You like Steven Universe? LoM had sexy gem people first! (Actually given that R. Sugar is nearly the same age as me I've always wondered if it was an influence) Love tragic romances and pirate penguins? Love cryptic feathery bards and cute and spooky plant children? Play this game!

...But seriously, if you have the means to, play this game xD

Caine

AlleycatIrony DOG'S LIFE WAS SO GOOD more games should let me play as different kind of dogs, just saying

I feel like The House in Fata Morgana is still considered a pretty underrated game, especially given how good it is? But then again it deals with SO many themes that deserve a big content warning that it's no wonder a lot of people aren't comfortable playing it, even though I found a large majority of the topics being handled with the sensitivity and respect they deserve without making them a joke or a fetish thing. Of course no game is perfect, but especially if you liked Umineko you'll probably really love this game too!

VitaminD

Dracula 3 - path of the dragon. Literally never met anyone who knows it other than me, so far.

mozaik
